An active shooter who allegedly fired several rounds at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego has reportedly been detained, CBS News said Tuesday.
Just after 8 a.m., authorities received a notification call from military police regarding shots fired in the building, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The sounds were heard in the basement of Building 26, which houses offices and barracks for wounded sailors and Marines as well as a gym, said spokesman Mike Alvarez.
A Navy spokesman said a report of three gunshots heard at Naval Medical Center San Diego came from a single witness.
Were not taking any chances and are executing procedures weve been trained for in this kind of situation, Alvarez said. However, I cannot confirm an active shooter.
A dozen unmarked SUVs some with flashing lights entered the center through the emergency room driveway gate around 9 a.m. A San Diego County Sheriffs Department armored truck followed minutes later.
At this time, the medical center remains on lockdown and a shelter-in-place order has been given.
Base officials advised those who remain inside of the building to hide, seek shelter in a secure area, silence their phones and to avoid doors and window.
Naval Base San Diego posted an advisory on Facebook for occupants to run, hide or fight during the active shooter situation.
