Satellite images confirm that the oldest Christian monastery in Iraq has been destroyed by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

St Elijah's stood on a hill near the northern city of Mosul for 1,400 years.

But analysts said the images, obtained by the Associated Press, suggested it had been demolished in late 2014, soon after IS seized the city.

A Catholic priest from Mosul warned that its Christian history was "being barbarically levelled".

"We see it as an attempt to expel us from Iraq, eliminating and finishing our existence in this land," said Father Paul Thabit Habib, who now lives in Kurdish-administered Irbil.

IS has targeted Christians in Iraq and neighbouring Syria, seizing their property and forcing them to convert to Islam, pay a special tax or flee.

The group has also demolished a number of monasteries and churches, as well as renowned pre-Islamic sites including Nimrud, Hatra and Nineveh in Iraq and Palmyra in Syria.

'Important place'

St Elijah's Monastery, or Deir Mar Elia, was believed to have been constructed by Assyrian monks in the late 6th Century. It was later claimed by a Chaldean Catholic order.

In 1743, its monks were given an ultimatum by Persian forces to convert to Islam. They refused and as many as 150 were massacred.

Here are some of the great comments on Huffpo :

Under most of the oldest European churches are the ruins of previous Pagan temples.

Who cares? When it was built Christianity was the same as ISIS.

if God is so great why didn't he protect your beloved church.

our religious freaks are as bad as theirs it's a wash

Usual rubbish I hear over at the open threads at Christian Forums. They allow atheists and non-Christian religions to post there (limited to certain areas).

The trolls abound there. Some self proclaimed atheists spend 12-16 hours on that forum a day. I ask them why they spend so much time with Christians at a Christian site.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

This reminds me why I am often stuck between hating (no, strongly disliking is better) Islamists like IS or regular trolling Atheists who are obsessed with Christianity

Christianity was never the same as ISIS, that is an outright lie. You cannot blame christianity for what European robber barons did in its name. Daesh is proving what we all know that the muslims are intent on wiping out other religions, their idea of peace is for everyone to bow down to satan five times a day. The enemy comes to rob, to steal, and to kill, but I come to bring life. that is the message of Jesus, of Christianity, but it is not the message of daesh

There is a chapter, funded in large part by a doctor in Elizabethtown, just south of and serving/targeting Fort Knox.

But bear in mind, KY G0vt, from the governor, now a Republican, on down serves obama.

Yes once a chaplain explained the significance of the site.

Perhaps a few are but seekers seek. Most are there proselytizing or trolling or both.

I preach to thousands, yet those who have come to CHRIST I can count on one hand, without using my thumb.

Think of this as you evangelize, according to the Gospels we find the largest crowd Jesus had was 5,000 men plus woman and children, maybe 60,000 all toll.

And this: Matthew 7:13.

Scripture never tells us that "seekers" are saved.

It uses the metric of "children of God, entering a New Covenant by adoption through the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ".

There are children of God, then there's atheists, agnostics and "seekers" and whatnot.

That would explain what I see at CF.

However God implores Israel to seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near.

But let me be clear. Such a seeker I believe has a changed heart and mind which God effects.

Those who pose as "seekers" at CF (they have a tag for such) are looking for some intellectual argument on why they should believe in God. That is not the Biblical seeking I mentioned above.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. There is a process of making churches more seeker-friendly at the expense of any real teaching substance. Many churches are getting downright hip.

I'm sure you're familiar with both the topic and the complaints about it.

Yes I know an IT guy at work who is a family life associate pastor in his church. The marriage interventions he and his wife encounter are quite interesting to say the least.

His church hit the local news after the gay marriage ruling. A gay couple wanted to dedicate their child in front of the congregation.

I interjected and asked why an openly gay and unrepentant couple were part of their church. He agreed they should not be but the pastor opens the door to all who want to "come to church."

So now this open door policy put the church into the position of endorsing a gay couple or denying a child who liked Sunday school (apparently receptive) . The news somehow got hold of this and of course created controversy.

The associate pastor stood up to the pastor and they accepted the kid but told the couple they would not recognize them as church members.

So yes, big issues. The NT church consisted of born again baptized believers who gathered with one heart and mind.
