Title: Hawking predicts end of earth within 1000 years or so

Professor Stephen Hawking has warned that a disaster on Earth within the next thousand or ten thousand years is a ‘near certainty'.

The cosmologist said that genetically engineered viruses, nuclear war and global warming all threatened to wipe out the human race in the foreseeable future.

He argued that unstoppable developments in science and technology were likely to prove the biggest danger, adding that the human race may only be able to survive in colonies on other planets in the solar system.

"Most of the threats we face come from the progress we’ve made in science and technology" Professor Stephen Hawking

“We face a number of threats: nuclear war, global warming and genetically engineered viruses," said Prof Hawking, speaking to the Radio Times ahead of his BBC Reith Lecture.

“Although the chance of a disaster on planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, becoming a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years.

“By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so it would not mean the end of the human race.

“However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period."

Killer robots from the film Terminator

Previously Prof Hawking has spoken of the dangers of the rise of artifical intelligence and has called for global agreements to prevent robots becoming uncontrollable.

He added: “Most of the threats we face come from the progress we’ve made in science and technology. We are not going to stop making progress, or reverse it, so we must recognise the dangers and control them. I’m an optimist, and I believe we can.”

Prof Hawking was responding to a question from a schoolboy who asked whether the world was likely to end at the hand of humans, or from a natural disaster.

“Science and technology are changing our world dramatically, so it’s important to ensure that these changes are heading in the right directions," added Prof Hawking.

"In a democratic society, this means that everyone needs to have a basic understanding of science, to make informed decisions about the future.”

Hawking agrees with the Bible 100%. First come the 7 last plagues which last about 100 years, and kill all the fish in the sea and make much of the earth too hot for the survival of life, including human life. And a thousands years from now the earth will indeed be destroyed, either by ourselves or an extra-terrestrial (God). Then we will continue on "a new earth without any sea" (in all liklyhood, Mars, as Hawking says).

I thought you had the earth ending very soon.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

Some of what he says is true, our road is unsustainable and technology is not our servant. Look at the mobile phone, it has already become our master and that device is unintelligent as are its users. Robotics offered the opportunities for a society with declining populations to continue to be productive without the mistake of mass migration. in the last 100 yearsw e have indeed seen great plagues and the one we won't master is just around the corner, we are working on killing all the fish in the sea by over fishing and global warming of the oceans will finish the job. we don't need to wait 1000 years for the earth to be destroyed our chances of surviving the next century are small.

neither is migration to another world sensible. Mars is as inhospitable a place as we could imagine and we lack the technology to terraform it,Thers is a reason why it is a sterile world. We might as well try living in a colony on the moon, we have more chance of a consistent transport system between the worlds. We need a planet with an atmosphere similar to Earth to survive and none have been found thus far. we are hardly more than ants and we contemplate leaving Earth. Time to wake up, stop dreaming and realise this is the one place in the universe that is ours and work to create a sustainable society by reducing population. Our genes will do it for us if we let them, the process has begun.

All the fish in the sea will indeed die, but it will be primarily caused by deadly water "the color of a dead man's blood (but I will agree that over-fishing and warming ocean temps also contribute). And it is indeed just around the corner. Scientists say it will happen by 2048.

When the earth is completely destroyed, those deemed worthy will get to go and live on Mars in an enclosed habitat measuring 1377 miles by 1377 miles, and 1377 miles high (which is the right height for a space elevator on Mars), and complete with its own atmosphere and water (which Mars has an adequate supply of). It will probably be shaped like a pyramid (see dollar bill).

Colonizing any planet that doesn't have a native atmosphere sufficient to sustain human life is a disaster waiting to happen. Sooner or later something breaks and everyone dies.

Terraforming tech developed to rapidly change a planet's atmosphere to something with long term sustainability will be what it takes.

bullshit, in fact, double bullshit or bullshit squared. Mars is a sterile world, sterilised by the solar wind, it has little atmosphere and low temperature, it is in hospitable to human life, what part of this do you not understand?

you might colonise Titan but the prospects of that are as far away as the moon itself. There is no quick fix we have to do the hard yards down here on Earth

I predict the end of Stephen Hawking within 10 years.

I'm simply repeating what both Hawking and the Bible says. I respect both of them pretty much equally, and I wouldn't call either one of them "bullshit."

Could he narrow the range a little ? Civilization has only been around for 6,000 years. A lot can happen in 10,000 years .

Hawking has a history of making bets and predictions contrary to others that have been in error, but I think betting on the wrong side it's more of a personal thing he gets a kick out of doing rather than because he is totally convinced of something.

His physical condition may well factor in psychologically to his seeing the end of humanity. Perhaps a secret jealousy of sorts that his life has been so physically limited while everyone around him enjoys full physical capability.

There's no way global warming, even in a worst case scenario of total polar icecap melt and sea levels rising 300 feet would wipe out humanity. Even if it resulted in 3/4's of human life being wiped out, that would still leave 1 billion left to carry on, a population count probably about the same as we had just 100 years ago, give or take. Humans will adapt far faster than climate would change. That's one thing we're good at.

I'm simply repeating what both Hawking and the Bible says.

I DIDN'T CALL THE bIBLE BULLSHIT, THE BIBLE SAYS WE WILL GET A NEW EARTH. I don't intrepret that as a sterile desert planet but a gleaming fertile planet and perhaps Earth itself swept clean. You should read the Bible sometime and not rely on what other people say it says .

As for Hawking he has been known to spout bullshit

Scientists are not bullshitters. They make their living by predicting things. That's the only way a scientist can be vindicated and stay in business. Same goes for a prophet. I prove my eschatological theory by predicting things, and I have been doing it since 1992, and have a perfect track record.

I too am a prophet, I see visions but intrepretation is another issue.

Anyone can predict the end of the earth in 1000 years, actually I predict the end within a hundred years and I don't need a PHD to do it, all I have to do is observe. We have caused more damage in the last 100 years than we did in all the time before, our lifestyle is unsustainable, our population growth rediculous, there is an asteroid out there with our name on it. Need I go on? Humanity is a greedy little virus that must inevietably destroy itself
