From Dave Weigel and Katie Zezima in the Washington Post:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) (R-Tex.) continued his rhetorical onslaught against Donald Trump on Saturday, casting him as a false conservative and questioning the real estate mogul’s temperament and judgment.

“Donald’s record does not match what he says as a candidate,” Cruz told reporters after a forum in Fort Mill, S.C. “It seems Donald has a lot of nervous energy. For whatever reason, Donald doesn’t react well when he’s going down in the polls.”

The remarks are part of an aggressive escalation in a relationship that had been strategically chummy. For months, Cruz had effusively praised Trump, stating there was a benefit to having the New Yorker in the race and chiding the media for “the little game” of pitting Republicans against one another.

Thursday’s Republican debate marked the end of that. Cruz, with unconcealed delight, chided Trump for raising questions about whether he met the Constitution’s “natural born” standard for president; with less success, he started raising questions about whether a Manhattan mogul could be trusted by conservatives.

Trump escalated his attacks Saturday morning, saying in a tweet that additional lawsuits will be filed questioning Cruz’s eligibility to be president. At a rally in Portsmouth, N.H., he knocked Cruz for not reporting loans from Goldman Sachs and Citibank that he used to fund his 2012 Senate campaign.

“How do you control . . . these big powerful banks, you’re a senator and yet you owe them money with a personal guarantee?” Trump said to a crowd of about 500.

Trump said Goldman “owns” Cruz and he will “Do anything they demand.” Cruz’s wife is on leave from her job as a managing director at Goldman.

In another tweet, Trump called Cruz the “ultimate hypocrite,” linking to a story about how Cruz attended an event at the New York home of two wealthy gay businessmen.

I blame Dick Nixon for not deporting Cruz after he snuck across the border from Canada, in the early 70's.

*lol*

Nixon was probably thrilled to get some border traffic from Canada.

Trump is getting the better of Cruz here.

Cruz has been made rich by Goldman Sachs. He will most certainly do what Goldman wants - he has a tremendous financial interest in the company through his managing director wife.

Trump made his billions in real estate.

So, Cruz is a bought politician questioning Trump's abilities. Trump made billions of dollars without political graft. Cruz loses that comparison.

Next there is the birther business. Trump was out there asking the question about OBAMA. That's right, TRUMP originally was raising the constitutional question regarding OBAMA, the chosen one. Republican politicians ran screaming for the weeds over the question or presidential eligibilty, but Trump bravely stood there, took the hits, and did not back down.

The issue was never adjudicated regarding Obama, and THEREFORE we don't know the answer - and so Trump is raising the very same issue AGAIN, against ANOTHER politician, because the political and judicial class punted.

Donald has been very consistent on this birther issue for a long time. It has caused him to face a lot of flack. But he is right: We don't know if Obama or Cruz are eligible under the Constitution. It has not been adjudicated on the proper facts and law. It has been people bellowing and sweeping it under the rug.

Now Cruz, like Obama, is trying to use it as a club against Trump. But there's a difference: Obama is a very charismatic likable guy, so people gave him a pass. Cruz is a dick and people do not like him when they work with him, so having him up there trying to slash and burn reminds people of Cruz's own personality deficiencies, not Trump's.

Trump had been cordial to Cruz, but Cruz had indeed effusively praised Trump. Now he's coming at him slash-and-burn. Meaning: Cruz will say anything at any time to get elected and get power.

By contrast, Trump has been raising the birth question for YEARS. And Trump was pro-choice many years ago, but since he changed his mind, he hasn't been head- faking about it the way Bush 41 and Romney did. Trump has spoken about it extensively. With Romney and H.W. Bush, they simply ignored the question (because they never seriously changed their minds). Trump DID, and has spoken about it at some length.

Of course Cruz is a hypocrite. He's a professional politician. Professional politicians are hypocrites.

Cruz has come after Trump now. He is making it easy to not pick him as veep.

I think it will be Trump-Rubio, because once Trump has won the nomination, he'll win the election, and the Establishment needs somebody in there. Rubio is the best choice on that side. He can't win the general, or the nomination, but he'll be an asset to Trump.

Who would WANT to run with Cruz? Nobody in his own party will have anything to do with him.

He was never going to win, because he's a dick and the people sense it. But he's done us a favor by going after Trump, because now Trump can strike him off his Veep list.

Cruz is attacking Trump's conservatism? Cruz and Rubio have both announced their support for holding a convention to rewrite the Constitution. As far as I know, Trump has not.

Cruz is scum.

Cruz is scum.

He learned it from the Bush family in Texas.

South Carolina: Cruz Hammers TrumpÂ’s Conservative Bona Fides, Judgment

Cruz in not in a position to question Trump's background.

This country is in the unenviable condition of having too many affable assholes who want to be president and too many unthinking easily-influenced assholes willing to support them.
