Title: IVF: First genetically-modified human embryos 'could be created in Britain within weeks'

The research involves editing of the genes of day-old IVF embryos

The first genetically-modified human embryos could be created in Britain within weeks according to the scientists who are about to learn whether their research proposal has been approved by the fertility watchdog.

Although it will be illegal to allow the embryos to live beyond 14 days, and be implanted into the womb, the researchers accepted that the research could one day lead to the birth of the first GM babies should the existing ban be lifted for medical reasons.

A licence application to edit the genes of “spare” IVF embryos for research purposes only is to be discussed on 14 January by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), with final approval likely to be given this month.

Scientists at the Francis Crick Institute in London said that if they are given the go-ahead they could begin work straight away, leading to the first transgenic human embryos created in Britain within the coming weeks or months.

The researchers emphasised that the research concerns the fundamental causes of infertility and involves editing of the genes of day-old IVF embryos that will not be allowed to develop beyond the seven-day “blastocyst” stage – it will be illegal to implant the modified embryos into the womb to create GM babies.

However, they accepted that if the research leads to a discovery of a genetic mutation that could improve the chances of successful pregnancies in women undergoing IVF treatment, it could lead to pressure to change the existing law to allow so-called “germ-line” editing of embryos and the birth of GM children.

“If you found that there were people carrying a specific mutation which meant that their embryos would never implant [in the womb], then you could contemplate using the genome-editing technique to make germ-line changes which would then allow the offspring of that woman to be able to reproduce without having a problem,” said Professor Robin Lovell-Badge of the Crick Institute.

“It’s possible. We don’t know. It’s just one of those unknowns, [but that would be a good argument] for allowing it to be used in a way that doesn’t have any other consequences, and remember quite a few genes that are active in the early embryo have roles later on,” Professor Lovell-Badge said.

Such a scenario is likely to be strongly opposed by some. David King, director of the pressure group Human Genetics Alert, said: “This is the first step on a path that scientists have carefully mapped out towards the legalisation of GM babies. Although we are always told that the HFEA is there to make sure that crucial ethical lines are not crossed, in reality, the HFEA exists precisely in order to manage and facilitate these transitions, and to make sure that the slope stays slippery.” (2 images)

The time when babies can be born without carrying any defective genes from either parent that leads to things like diabetes, cancer, early heart failure, blindness, etc, etc, etc is not far off if we can keep the religious kooks from interfering, and keep the population control people under control.

I see the biggest problem being future births being regulated by the governments to prevent over-population from all the people not dying. Obviously,if fewer people die, there is less need for more people to be born, and if pregnancies are allowed to happen in an unregulated way,we would soon be swarming with humans.

The other side of this argument will be "If the birth of babies is restricted, who will be around working and paying the taxes to support all these 120 year old seniors?"

Anyway you look at it,it is a complex problem and there won't be any easy answers until and unless we start colonizing other worlds.

That's true enough.

But what scares me is who gets to decide which solutions are implemented.

There are three kinds of people in the world: those that can add and those that can't

But what scares me is who gets to decide which solutions are implemented.

What scares me as well as makes me sad is the ONLY people who will be even remotely qualified to come up with unbiased rational answers will be soulless bureaucrats that only find life in numbers.

If we let the True Believer Religion types choose, the world would be full of unwanted rape babies, babies born retarded and/or with serious life-long health issues, babies born crippled, etc, etc, etc.

If we let the SOW gang radicals decide, only female babies will be born,or maybe a few babies genetically pre-disposed to be born homosexuals after the homosexual gene chain is found and separated from the bi-sexual gene(s)will be allowed to be born.

If black racists are the ones deciding, only black babies will be born. If white racists are the ones deciding, only white babies will be born. If Jewish.....,etc,etc,etc.

There has to be a rational middle ground where the health and future of the species is the prime consideration, and only the soulless bureaucrats and scientists have the emotional detachment to be able to do that.

Also, someone who doesn't mind becoming VERY unpopular is going to have to decide to limit the birth of live babies to natives in places like Africa and New Guinea to a level where they can exist without expanding very much or any at all. Like it or not,but the majority of these people are still basically thinking and operating at the stone age level thousand of years after it died off everywhere else. There is going to come a time when the resources just won't be there to allow the unproductive to reproduce or survive at the same levels of the productive people.

The same thing will apply to the chronically unproductive unteachable segments of Caucasian and Asian populations. Nobody needs adult pets.

The only humane way to stop or slow this down is to determine who can and who can not impregnate or get pregnant.

Triage for humanity.

Whoever gets that job is going to need both a LOT of personal protection as well as a thick skin.

Hell,I expect to be flamed on a historic level for just pointing out unpopular truths that should be obvious to anyone that thinks about it for a few minutes.

The Catholic Church has nothing to do with it.

Obviuously, it is the Brits and the Anglican Church that will control the process of who gets to live and die, and which baby gets the CRISPR treatent, as I have covered in another thread on CRISPR babies. The main problem is, at today's state of the art, for every successful genetically modified baby, there are 9.5 mutants created. The question is, what will happen to the mutants?

News flash just in. The Roman Catholic Church has not controlled things in England since the mid-1500s. The Anglican-Catholics now control things in England.

So what? England is just one small country. They have been trying to control the entire world ever since Day One. They even supported communist "liberation" movements from the 60's to this very day, hoping they would be sitting in the cat birds seat when the revolution dust settled as the only religion.

Not to mention the religious war they supported in Ireland up until recently.

Pure freaking evil from the very beginning right up to today.

The Roman Church is not evil. It is one of the seven golden lampstands set up by the early Church to give light to the 7 parts of the earth. But Rome has in effect been surpassed by Canterbury as the light of the west, or at least the far west.

For a man who does not believe in God, you have a particular obsession with the Roman Catholic Church.

Of course you would!

People who are as anti-God as you have been infected by Satan, and of course Satan is viscerally repulsed by the Catholic Church in particular, because it's so big and so old, the chief enemy of his among humans.

That there are other churches, East and West, is a measure of how successful Satan has been at corrupting Christians (this is not to say that the spin-off churches are themselves corrupt - some are; others spun off out of disgust at the corruption that infected the Catholic Church itself at various points in its history).

All of them together still comprise "the Church", however separated from each other and individual hostile the component branches might be, and the Church has been the primary source of civilization in the world since Roman times.

OF COURSE you, being an atheist and an unwitting thrall of Satan, will view the Church as the most vile and horrible thing. It is the chief enemy of your father and master, who has thwarted him at every turn.

So rail away at the Latins, and at the Anglicans, and the Orthodox and Baptists too while you're at it. The darkness never has comprehended the light.

And yet most of the good things that you have in life, most of the concepts of liberty and respect for the person that you take for granted as "Western" values, came from God through Christ. The rest of the world never developed these things. Atheists certainly never did. You atheists' great triuphant contribution to human advancement was Communism, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Kim Il Sung, Pol Pot , Fidel Castro and Ho Chi Minh, and each of their own special brands of atheism.

And of all of them, the Castros have been the ones that have drifted back towards reason, mainly because of the latent Catholicism of their own education, and the innate Catholicism of Latin culture.

You can turn Catholics, for a time, into dictatorial oppressors, but the Killing Fields are simply not compatible with the Catholic nature.

When you were in the rice paddies of Vietnam, the people trying to kill you were not Catholics.

And yet you probably have some sort of bizarre twisted theories about how deep down the Catholics are to blame even for their own worst enemies.

I've observed that over the years from various men on the American right - a raging ridiculous blind insanity about the Catholic Church. What is that? It is Satan twisting in their own souls, howling violently at a light they cannot comprehend.

Will you reform your view at all? Well, there's still time. But no, you never will. Once the Devil sets the hook that deep it doesn't get taken out until death. Then you'll wise up.

And then you will thank God Almighty that the Catholics were right all along about Purgatory. There's some light in you. It's not all darkness. God won't snuff out that light. But you'll definitely need a thorough cleansing and purification to get all that dirt off it.

Now have a nice day.

Don't spend too much time on the screaming "Catholics eat babies!" rant in reply, because I'm never going to read it.

What verse is that? It isn't a verse. It is Catholic bullshit. It does a disservice to people because they think they get a second chance.

While much of what you wrote in this post is true. In fact most of it.

But there is poison in your deception. The deception of telling a man he has a chance after death. The blind leading the blind comes to mind.
