From Mike Barnes writing at the Hollywood Reporter:

David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 69.

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” read a statement posted on the artist’s official social media accounts.

The influential singer-songwriter and producer dabbled in glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career. He just released his 25th album, Blackstar, Jan. 8, which was his birthday.

Bowie’s artistic breakthrough came with 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, an album that fostered the notion of rock star as space alien. Fusing British mod with Japanese kabuki styles and rock with theater, Bowie created the flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

I see Wiki offered a tidbit I didn't know.

In 1990, Queen and Bowie filed a lawsuit against American rapper Vanilla Ice for copying the bass line of "Under Pressure" with only minor modifications in his song "Ice Ice Baby".[228][229] The dispute was later resolved with an undisclosed out-of-court settlement.[228]

Yeah, Vanilla Ice will steal anything.

Whenever I heard that bass line in the Ice Ice Baby song, I always thought I was going to hear "Under Pressure" - a song I really liked (it was my "motto song" during Plebe Summer back in 1981).

Then I'd hear "Ice, Ice, Baby..." and I figured they much have been paying royalties to use that base line.

Turns out they just used it without royalties. Which was insane. That line was so obviously original to "Under Pressure" that it was impossible for anybody to think that it wasn't a full-on steal.

Pieces of one musician's music are incorporated into others' music all the time. When you do that, you pay a royalty for it.

I thought it an obscure footnote but apparently it really is a Thing if someone here at our small forum was aware of it.

I can't really recall any other David Bowie songs. Most of them seemed like atonal nonsense, sung in a nasal Brit accent. I do think Bowie was a big cultural trendsetter in style and presentation in some ways, as Warhol was. Like the Beach Boys with their Pet Sounds album. Never chart-topping sales but they had an enormous influence on other musicians for many years to come.

I'm always amused when pop musicians sue each other. It was all supposed to be about peace, luv, caring, sharing on a communal basis -- remember? Confess Bowie's stuff has never done a thing for me.

I dunno, I suppose he had a half-dozen tunes over the decades. You can't say he ever compared to the Stones or some other big acts. In part, he just hung around forever, it seemed. His career reminded me of Warhol's.

Well, I've been wandering through the desert looking for one that's active, intelligent, FUNNY and hard-right including no bans on Jew-truth. This one's looking good! We had a fantastic golden age in the the American Nationalist Union forum some years ago -- real mountain peak -- but people lost interest and drifted off, then it closed. Freedom4um's been my obsession for a year or more but it's gotten awful slow just lately.

You know of any other good ones just in case? I like having spares of everything :-)

including no bans on Jew-truth

That's 4um's job. LF is a lot less that way, more a generic conservative-to-libertarian hangout. LP was too but was very pro-Israel. Goldie said she was Jewish and certainly identified that way but it turned out after she died that she never finished converting formally to Judaism or attended synagogue regularly. But she was die-hard pro-Israel. I always thought this was how 4um got started, as a reaction to her 1000%-pro-Israel forum.

The average poster here at LF is still far more pro-Israel than anti-Israel. I'd say Israel is admired more for its pluckiness in a really bad neighborhood full of repulsive anti-Western regimes. We do have a few of the '67-borders-for-Israel posters here at LF. So that is a marked contrast between LP/LF and 4um.

If those countries are anti-American, how did those regimes ever get that way? They weren't before Israel was forced on them to pay for the European Hollowcaust and America became its junkyard dog.

Yeah, Hollowcaust.

No he doesn't hate Israel. He's Israel's baby -- 90% of the time. How many wars on towelhead countries does it take to prove it as he continues the Bush Jews' little PNAC project?

But there's really nothing wrong with hating Israel. It's a place I love to hate, because I love justice and truth, and it ain't got any! BTW, a majority of rabbis opposed setting it up before 1948. Called it a prophetic counterfeit, which is it is.
