Title: To the man I sat next to on the train: I am the gun owner you hate

To the man I sat next to on my way in to Boston:

When I boarded the commuter rail, you were already in the midst of a spirited phone conversation and didn’t seem to care about how loud you were talking. You were talking with someone about the Paris train attack and the growing epidemic of gun violence in America.

You spoke about the “murderous NRA” and “bloodthirsty gun nuts” who were causing our schools to “run red with blood.” You spoke profanely of the Republicans who opposed President Obama’s call for “sensible gun control,” and you lamented the number of “inbred redneck politicians” who have “infiltrated Capitol Hill.”

I found myself amazed at the irony of the situation. While you were spewing your venom, I sat quietly next to you with my National Rifle Association membership card in my wallet and my 9mm pistol in its holster. You were only 12 inches away from my legally owned semiautomatic pistol. I suppose I didn’t look like the “bloodthirsty gun nut” you thought I should be. It apparently didn’t register to you that I could so cleverly disguise myself by wearing a fleece coat, Patriots hat, and khakis.

So, to the angry liberal who sat next to me on the commuter rail: I don’t hate you. I don’t have any ill feelings toward you. I don’t wish to do you harm. And I don’t regret sitting next to you. On the contrary; I feel bad for you. It must hurt carrying that much hate inside of you.

You obviously have strong opinions about this hot topic. So, let me say this as plainly as I can: If a bad guy with a gun had decided to walk onto that train and start shooting people, I would have been prepared and able to use my gun to defend my own life and the lives of everyone else on that train, including yours. Although you may hate me, a gun owner, I would risk my life for you.

Opinions and ideologies make a pretty thin shield against the bullets of a madman. Your liberal self-righteousness and ignorance may have made you feel superior and comfortable, but during that 40-minute train ride to Boston, my gun kept you safe.

How do you figure that, was there an imminent threat you were aware of? did a real threat materialise?, NO!, you were just having one of your fantasies. Whether you may have been able to take action or being frozen in fear is a mute point. There is a strong possibility that if you took action you may have caused collateral damage to others.

Perhaps you gained an understanding of what many people feel, that they don't want to be defended by vigilantes. Let your paranoia go becuase that is what you are feeding

Laying aside your attempt to ascribe your hysterical fantasies to the man, I wouldn't feel reluctant to sit next to him. Your mentality frightens me a lot more than his does.

The mentality of this gun nonsense frightens me.It is a juvanile response to what is a public safety crisis

My mentality is I'm fed up with this juvanile argument. If you are going to have open carry then every carries a weapon in plain view, then we all know what is going on. However the situation where there might be someone carrying a weapon is dangerous. We don't know the mental capacity or mental state of that person so if you are going to have open carry everyone who is going to carry needs to be assessed. Who are you going to allow to carry? teenagers? Aggravated or anti-social individuals? This is what is wrong with the argument, you don't want regulation but regulation is important in protection of the public. You cannot just see this argument in relation to freedoms or liberty there are wider issues

Nice speech consisting of more attempts to generate hysteria.

December 22, 1984 Bernhard Goetz was riding a southbound express train in lower Manhattan . Suddenly he was surrounded by 4 predators intent on mugging and robbing him.

Between 1966 and 1981, violent crime rates in the city had more than tripled from 325 to 1100 violent crimes per 100,000 people annually. By mid-decade, the city had a reported crime rate over 70% higher than the rest of the United States. In 1984, there were 2 homicides, 18 violent crimes, and 65 property thefts reported per 10,000 people. The subway became a symbol of the city's inability to control crime

But Bernie was not the defenseless victim who so often the police assist AFTER the crime is committed . Bernie was armed with a Smith and Wesson 5 shot 38- caliber revolver . He shot all 5 rounds wounding all his attackers . But now Bernie was a criminal in the eyes of the law.

Bernie had tried to get a legal carry permit because he had been mugged before . While transporting electronic equipment in 1981, he was attacked in the Canal Street subway station by three "youths" . They smashed him into a plate-glass door and threw him to the ground, permanently injuring his chest and knee. Goetz assisted an off-duty officer in arresting one of them; the other two attackers escaped. Goetz was angered when the arrested attacker spent less than half the time in the police station than Goetz himself spent, and he was angered further when this attacker was charged only with criminal mischief, for ripping Goetz's jacket. When he applied for the carry permit ,he was denied because of "insufficient need ".

In the immediate aftermath ,the crime rate plunged in the NYC subway system as predators were served notice that all their would be victims were not sheeple. In fact it plunged so much ,the authorities held back the numbers ... the truth hurt too much. After reaching an all-time peak in 1990, crime in New York City dropped dramatically through the rest of the 1990s. As of 2006, New York City had statistically become one of the safest large cities in the U.S. Goetz's actions in the subway incident was a contributing factor precipitating the groundswell movement against crime in subsequent years.

Bernie was now a fugitive .But his story became national news. The next day an NRA political director held a news conference at the Park Terrace Hotel on 7th Avenue with Roy Innis, National Chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and State Senator Chris Mega from Brooklyn declaring, "A government which cannot protect its citizens has no right denying them the means to protect themselves"! Journalist Murray Kempton asked if he was urging vigilantism? He replied "when will Mayor Koch provide the same level of protection to the citizens who ride the subways and pay their taxes that he enjoys surrounded by a phalanx of New York's finest, oh with guns at the ready" ? The Guardian Angels, a volunteer patrol group of mostly black and Hispanic teenagers, collected thousands of dollars from subway riders toward a legal defense fund for Goetz.

Nine days later he surrendered to police and was charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and several firearms offenses. A jury found him not guilty of all charges except for one count of carrying an unlicensed firearm, for which he served eight months of a one-year sentence. He was later sued by one of his scum attackers who was awarded a civil judgment of $43 million against Goetz.

C'mon! You don't really expect us to believe you have ever had an actual thought,do you? If that were so,you wouldn't be a Dim.

Here is a hint for you. Anyone with the mental and emotional problems that scare you almost as much as having an actual independent thought doesn't give a damn about the legality involved with owning or carrying a weapon. Unlike you, they are crazy, not stupid.
