Gary Johnson 2016! Finally! The wait is over and Gary Johnson is officially running for President in 2016. There are many libertarians who have been waiting years for the Governor to make that decision. Speculation has been running rampant since at least 2014 when Gary Johnson first declared he wanted to run for President again.
According to Cannabis Sativa Inc. Gary Johnson has resigned as CEO to pursue political opportunities. That press release confirms numerous rumors from a variety of sources that Gary Johnson would declare his run for President this week. The formal announcement is surely not far off.
First, Gary Johnson will have to run for the Libertarian Partys nomination for President. Because Johnson has waited so long to officially announce hes running for President he faces an entirely different political landscape. It wont be the walk in the park that getting the Libertarian Party nomination was in 2012.
While Gary has been waiting in the wings for over a year talking about how he wanted to run for President a number of other candidates have entered the race. There are multiple well organized and well funded competitors to the incumbent nominee.
Contributing to that challenge is the significant controversy surrounding a number of comments Gary Johnson has made recently. Even though Johnson once said that he would vote for Rand Paul and thought his campaign was terrific he changed his tune in 2015. In an October Facebook post Johnson unscrupulously attacked Rand Paul for selling out and simultaneously dissed Ron Paul as well. His disdainful attitude has turned away many libertarians who once respected the man.
In addition to his damaged political reputation, theres also the suspicious circumstances surrounding Gary Johnsons marijuana company Cannabis Sativa Inc (CBDS). The former Governor joined the company as CEO in July, 2014. At the time the stock was valued at $10.75 a share but as of this articles writing has fallen to less than $0.70 a share. Then Johnson abruptly resigned in early January. Something isnt right there.
The cherry on top of these controversies is the fact that Gary Johnsons 2012 campaign debt has yet to be paid off. According to the latest available FEC filing the campaign still has approximately $1.4 million in debt. While uncommon, this isnt entirely unusual for Presidential campaigns. However, its not exactly the fiscally conservative record that many libertarians look for.
Given these factors Gary Johnson has quite the year ahead of him. He will face stiff competition from Steve Kerbel, John McAfee, and Austin Petersen for the Libertarian Partys nomination. Theyll each be able to use these points of contention against him. Getting the nomination will not be the walk away victory that Gary Johnson enjoyed in 2012.
That said, the more candidates running for the Libertarian Partys nomination the better. Now that Gary Johnson is officially running for President there will surely be more news coverage and digital ink used on libertarian candidates and their ideas. Educating voters about liberty is the end goal after all and Gary Johnson running for President in 2016 will help see it achieved.
