I'm just looking for ideas a 4th grader could use in a class where an invention is expected. It has to be something that can be constructed and actually used. My idea is a "finicky cat feeder." You put a bended piece of plexiglass (in a tunnel shape) onto a sheet of plywood. You cut holes into the plexiglass where food can be dropped and allow the cat to stalk pieces of food along a path. I had the same exact idea for a finicky cat feeder. Same basic arrangement too. Except I would load the feeder up with finicky cats so I could feed hungry pitbulls. To: no gnu taxes, TooConservative (#0) I had the same exact idea for a finicky cat feeder. Same basic arrangement too. There are plenty of suitable DIY Cat Toy/Feeder videos available on YouTube. Friskies® has a whole series of a dozen of em, but a lot of "cat people" post their own videos too. Since it's just for a 4th Grade project, I don't think it would be "cheating" to see what other people have come up with... but it might help stimulate your own "idea" of design details with whatever materials you have available. I like the 2nd toy in the following video... it's only made from construction paper and cardboard tube scotch-taped together... but I can already picture making it out of some kind of plastic and PVC tube and gluing it together so it's more durable... and maybe varying the lenght of the tubes so it's more interesting to the cat... And I like that it can be used with the tubes either upright or on their side, which makes it more challenging for the cat too... Hmmmm.... why even bother covering the end of the tubes? Leave them open so the cat can snoop for treats from either side when the bundle of tubes are laying on their side... just make sure when you glue them together, all the tube ends are "even" on one side so you can still stand them upright sometimes (and the uneven ends sticking up make it more interesting for the cat.) Or browse the YouTubes and combine different ideas for whatever you want... they all look easy enough for a 4th grader... Good luck and have fun! Obama has played at being a president while enjoying the perks … golf, insanely expensive vacations at tax-payer expense. But it's also darn near impossible to invent something that's so unique that nobody ever thought of it before... So use the videos just to stimulate some ideas... then use your own imagination to make something similar, but different... change the design a little, use different materials, combine some different features... "similar, but different" That oughta be good enough for 4th grade. It's just a class project... not like you're actually trying to market it and worried about violating somebody's patent.
