Outspoken actor Samuel L. Jackson admits he had "really wanted" the shooter in the San Bernardino attack was white because he didn't want Muslim-Americans to get any more backlash than they already have.
The "Hateful Eight" star told the Hollywood Reporter he empathizes with Muslim-Americans, whom he believes are becoming the "new young black men" in the United States due to the wave of scrutiny they are receiving.
“I can't even tell you how much I really wanted (the San Bernardino shooting) to just be another, you know, crazy white dude, and not really some Muslims," he told the magazine. "Because it's like, 'Oh, s---. It's here.' "
"It's like they have a legitimate reason now to look at your Muslim neighbor, friend, whatever in another way," he continued.
Jackson's comments come less than four weeks after the horrific shooting on Dec. 2 that left 14 dead and 22 seriously injured. The attack was carried out by a married couple named Syed Farook, who was born in the United States, and Tashfeen Malik, who was born in Pakistan but living in America.
The mass shooting was deemed an act of terror by President Obama, and it prompted Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump to propose a highly controversial temporary ban of all Muslims entering the U.S.
Jackson, who sometimes golfs with Trump, told The Hollywood Reporter he doesn't agree with the bombastic billionaire’s campaign, which he says is filled with "hate."
"There's absolutely nothing I can do," he said. "There are some other people that aren't as open about what he's saying that are running also, you know, that are just as crazy, that have just as much ill will toward the common man — and not just the common black man.
"People who don't have a certain amount of money don't mean anything to them," he added.
Jackson added that he plans on voting for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in an effort to "keep those other people from winning."
