I've noticed some issues with the site being inaccessible recently. A check has shown the difficulty has been with the entire linode data center, as linode.com (the host for the web server for this site) has also been inaccessible.

A check just now with linode shows a report by linode staff that a DOS attack has been in play against the data center, likely having nothing to do with this site. They are taking care of it, and hopefully all will be well soon.

Linode has been a very reliable and high quality service, consistently, for the many years I've been with them, so this type of thing is very unusual, but they are on top of it.

Yeah, I just had a clunky time posting my other reply.

I saw this fresh over at Slashdot, a major nerd site since the Nineties and recalled this thread by Neil.

Typically, at Slashdot they post a user-written excerpt or summary and one or more links to start a thread. This one is a bit sparse since they just post a link to the Linode status page. Slashdot has user-voted comments and can adjust how much of the comments you see with the two sliders toward the upper-right of the page at Slashdot but has its own drawbacks, like any forum software. It is an interesting forum system if you've never seen it before. Play around with those sliders as it tends to load only the top 100 rated comments on any given thread. Like LF or any other forum, you have plenty of colorful and opinionated posters. They even allow anonymous posts and allow any post to be voted -1 (trollery/off-topic).

Anyway, you might enjoy seeing some fresh off-site trollery. /. never runs short on that!

/.: Linode Under DDoS Since Christmas

Linode has been getting hit with DDoS attacks since Christmas Day, and it looks like their pain is set to continue. The attackers are rotating DDoS traffic through various regions of Linode's service. They say, "All of these attacks have occurred multiple times. Over the course of the last week, we have seen over 30 attacks of significant duration and impact. As we have found ways to mitigate these attacks, the vectors used inevitably change. As of this afternoon, we have mostly hardened ourselves against the above attack vectors, but we expect more to come. ... Once these attacks stop, we plan to share a complete technical explanation about what has been happening." See their status page for updates.

Reading that status page and going back to 12/25/15, it appears to me that LF's actual server is located in Linode's Dallas server farm.

Dallas is no longer under attack. But Atlanta is. Which is why LF seems to be operating normally again. I think. Neil probably knows where AKA's server is physically located.

Yes, it's in Dallas.
