At New York Magazine, Ed Kilgore looks at the battle between the grassroots and the establishment within the GOP. It’s hard for a political party to self-diagnose its problems when its thinkers are at odds about the nature and extent of the current symptoms. That’s the condition of the Republican Party, which began this presidential cycle highly confident about consolidating power gained at the congressional and state levels during the last two midterms with the capture of that last Democratic redoubt, the White House. Some Republicans think that is still the party’s trajectory, and dismiss the craziness of the early GOP presidential contest as an illusion or a temporary moment of turbulence. A greater number cover their ears and tell themselves and others that nothing that happens before late primary voters run to the rescue of Establishment candidates is real. All this Trump lunacy, all this “outsider revolt” business, is just noise created by mischievous or hostile media elements, they believe. The enduring Reagan ideology of well-armed internationalism, free-market economics, and the gradual, stealthy erosion of the New Deal and Great Society abominations, advanced by skillful if conventional politicians, will reassert its control over the GOP when the deal really goes down. maybe you should read the article . It heavily quotes Bush speech writer David Frum. He is advocating a move away from core conservative principles for the party .The article quotes Frum's article in this month's 'Atlantic' magazine where he urges the party to take steps for the government to protect retirement security as well as investing in hard infrastructure, and mending Obamacare instead of simply pushing to repeal it. In other words the party should adopt Trump's move away from conservative orthodoxy .

Joe Snuffy is a old poster I miss. His tag line read, 'The best way to control the opposition is to lead it'. It's a Lenin quote, and fits your party nicely. 'What kind of man gives cigarettes to trees?'

I expect Lindsey Graham will be switching parties soon. He will be like Arlen Specter who bailed on the party when he was about to lose a primary .

It wouldn't surprise me. I think JEB would switch too,if it weren't for the next generation of Bush traitors already making their political bones in Texas politics. He opused from LP years ago. Think it may have been some of the racial overtones there he was t comfortable with. But, my memory is a little hazy on this. Shame, I really enjoyed his posts.
