Vet Warren McDonough was 91 when he died Saturday. He never married and his only known survivor was a nephew in Florida. The big crowd who attended his wake Thursday night at Ratterman’s Funeral Home in St. Matthews showed up in response to a call from Lena Lyons, who runs a boarding home where McDonough spent his final days. Lyons told WHAS-TV McDonough deserved to be remembered because of what he did for his country. He was part of the first wave at Omaha Beach and earned a Purple Heart. But he never talked about his wartime experience—except for one time, she said. “He said he pretended to be dead until they all went away,” she told WHAS-TV. “He said, ‘And then I inched slowly across other bodies and I went across this one guy and his lips were moving and I got up close to him and he was saying the Lord's Prayer.’ And he said. ‘I laid with him and stayed with him and prayed with him until he died.’” More strangers are expected to attend McDonough’s funeral Friday at Fairmont Cemetery in Central City. He is being buried with full military honors. At the wake George Southern and other members of the Kentucky and Indiana Patriot Guard stood at the entrance to the funeral home in the cold as an honorary color guard, WLKY-TV reported. "He gave his life and his days for us to have this freedom to do this and we stand in honor of him," Southern told the station. Lyons said McDonough wrote his own obituary but did not include everything. "Nothing about the Purple Heart or his Medal of Courage, nothing, not even that he was in the Army, let alone that he went to Normandy,” she told WLKY. “He was a very humble man.” Lyons told WHAS McDonough always said he was not a hero. “I was just doing what I was supposed to do,” she quoted him as saying. WTH is a "Medal of Courage"? Did anyone bother to check to see if he was actually a soldier and part of the D Day invasion force? Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) American Indians had open borders. Look at how well that worked out for them.

It doesn't sound like it. I see it mentioned that there was a local honor guard, something you'd expect for a known veteran. An obit reprint is here.

I don't know a quick and easy way to determine one's prior military service status, especially from 70 years ago. I know there are ways to do it formally. I would like to think the funeral home did some sort of verification of his background.
At age 91, few people have anyone left because they've outlived them all, sometimes even their own children. One of the downsides of living a very long life. Everyone you ever knew or cared about is already dead. My mom mentions this too and she isn't even 85 yet.
It was. I had a High School teacher who was a WW1 vet. Good guy.
Well,since the guy is dead and doesn't seem to have ever tried to profit financially from it,it really doesn't make any difference at this point. The phrase "Let sleeping dogs lie" seems to fit this situation. I was just curious because AFAIK,there is and never has been a Medal of Courage. I think the guy was making this stuff up,but as I already wrote,it makes no difference at this point. I would like to think the funeral home did some sort of verification of his background. They wouldn't touch it unless the VA or the Army was paying for the funeral. Even then they wouldn't care or check to see if he was wounded at Normandy. They would just check to make sure they were going to get a check. They were quoting his caregiver lady. He likely earned some medal with a V device for valor. We agree, it doesn't matter now.

She recently lost another friend who was 91. Very few showed up at the funeral because she had, of course, outlived them all. My own grandmothers complained about this too, one dying at 89 and the other at 93. They talked about being the only ones at someone's funeral who had attended school with them, etc. This is when an older person is hearing that bell, tolling for them. I recall years back stopping at a local drivein with my dad. We ran into an old guy that my dad knew from business dealings over many years and who was then around 90. His son (around 50) was with him. He had lost his wife a few years earlier. He talked to my dad for a while about how much he wished someone would just shoot him. Not pleasant for my dad, embarrassing for his son. People always act as though the only thing worth living for is to outlive everyone you know. I'm not sure that that is the primary goal of a good life. Seems rather empty when you look close. And, bucky-boy, if you don't like me, put me on bozo or stop posting to me. You're a far bigger asshole on this forum than I am.
