Washington (CNN)—The U.S. Air Force has fired off more than 20,000 missiles and bombs since the U.S. bombing campaign against ISIS began 15 months ago, according to the Air Force, leading to depleted munitions stockpiles and calls to ramp up funding and weapons production.

As the U.S. ramps up its campaign against the Islamist terror group in Iraq and Syria, the Air Force is now "expending munitions faster than we can replenish them," Air Force chief of staff Gen. Mark Welsh said in a statement.

"B-1s have dropped bombs in record numbers. F-15Es are in the fight because they are able to employ a wide range of weapons and do so with great flexibility. We need the funding in place to ensure we're prepared for the long fight," Welsh said in the statement. "This is a critical need."

The bombing campaign has left the U.S. Air Force with what an Air Force official described as munitions depot stocks "below our desired objective."

The official told CNN that the Air Force has requested additional funding for Hellfire missiles and is developing plans to ramp up weapons production to replenish its stocks more quickly. But replenishing that stock can take "up to four years from time of expenditure to asset resupply," the official said.

"The precision today's wars requires demands the right equipment and capability to achieve desired effects. We need to ensure the necessary funding is in place to not only execute today's wars, but also tomorrow's challenges," the official said.

Which nations are attacking ISIS?

The Air Force's publication of the number of missiles and bombs dropped comes amid continued criticism from Republicans -- in particular those running for president -- who insist the Obama administration has been too timid in the fight against ISIS, with many on the right calling for the U.S. to loosen the rules of engagement and lead a more aggressive fight against the militant group.

American pilots have fired weapons in less than half of the nearly 18,000 sorties they have in the first 10 months of 2015, according the latest figures available.

That's up from 2014, when pilots fired their weapons just one third of the time.

That's because we've been droping them in the wrong place!

A very good question, another is where are they attacking them? They spend all their time trying to find targets where there won't be any casualities just so no "civilian" will be hurt. Any civilain in Daesh territory is very suspect since it is a long time since Daesh took any new territory. Do we really think daesh don't have an active radicalisation program?

The Russians have the right idea, bomb the enemy, the civilians will move they are not under the illusion that the friend of my enemy is my friend. These people are sunni arabs, they have no love for america who took Iraq away from them

This brings to mind the air attacks on Libya by EU/NATO. After some months of bombing, the EU NATO countries had depleted their weapons stocks entirely, leaving them barely able to defend themselves from their arsenals. At this point, having gotten in over their heads, EU/NATO whined and begged until Obama/Xlinton came in to finally knock off Ghaddafi for them. A situation similar to how EU/NATO exhausted itself in Yugoslavia in the Nineties until they whined for Xlinton to come bomb targets (and the Chinese embassy) for them.

Hillary Xlinton: "We came, we saw, he died." Along with one of her hideous cackles.

Of course, it wasn't Ghaddafi who died. It was the nation of Libya which he had barely managed to hold together, largely by providing services like water (!), spraying for locusts, education, housing. He was a horrible clown but he was the best thing that ever happened to Libya.

And so now, EU/NATO has not replenished its stockpiles of weapons after depleting them in 2011 because they all slashed their military budgets, even Britain.

And now we've depleted our own arsenal of missiles and bombs which will probably require $100B or more to replenish somewhat. Unless we go after Syria even harder and then it will take a lot more than that.

NATO is one sad-ass coalition, a mere ghost of its Cold War incarnation.

Well,it takes a lot of bombs when your goal is to defeat the enemy by killing privates instead of the Generals, the politicians, and the bankers.

A fair assessment.

As you know these PGMs are not cheap.

But a short term decision would be to use more "dumb bombs" with cheaper guidance packages.

You can take older bomb bodies and add JDAM guidance packages.

Zig probably knows a lot more of the details.

Now if the old bomb bodies are depleted that's another matter. We have that type of manufacturing limited. Maybe China can help:)

From the article it looks as though we have been Maverick Missile heavy in these attacks. A very good precision munition with EO and lazer guidance.

Mavs are good for taking out point targets with lower collateral damage concerns than a JDAM.

And Mavs are expensive. The JDAM guidance package not so much.

a very good question, there are some in the middle east who are on the same side of the fight, not sure if that qualifies as friends. I'm observing that close to where I live the muslim/white debate is about to ignite again, we might expect some clashes this summer as hairy arabs invade our beaches and insult our women.

A few years ago we had pictures of a very fat cop fighting them off with a baton and those pictures have appeared on TV again lately. There are few who can be considered friends

I knew some very nice family oriented Iraqis while serving in Iraq. Unfortunately, such are marginalized and submit to the aggressor types or are 'terminated.'

I know that Hussein had a secular government, which largely turned Islamic after our efforts. Secular people undoubtedly had problems. I won't say there aren't good Islamic people too, but the Koran has their hearts and minds.
