RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. urged students, staff and faculty at his Christian school to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon on campus to counter any copycat attack like the deadly rampage in California just days ago.

"Let's teach them a lesson if they ever show up here," Falwell told an estimated 10,000 of the campus community at convocation Friday in Lynchburg. While Falwell's call to arms was applauded, his remarks also seemed to target Muslims.

"I've always thought if more good people had concealed carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in .," Falwell said. The final words of his statement could not be clearly heard on a videotape of the remarks.

However, Falwell told The Associated Press on Saturday he was specifically referring to Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, the husband and wife who shot and killed 14 people at a holiday party in San Bernardino on Wednesday.

Falwell also said he believed the campus needed to be prepared in the face of the increasing frequency of mass killings. He cited, for example, the 2007 massacre of 32 people at Virginia Tech, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, and less than 100 miles southwest of Liberty.

"What if just one of those students or one of those faculty members had a concealed permit and was carrying a weapon when the shooter walked into Virginia Tech? Countless lives could have been saved," he said.

Falwell's message is apparently being heeded. He said more than 100 people had asked Liberty police about a free class to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Liberty was founded by Jerry Falwell Sr., who was among the nation's first conservative cultural warriors. The Moral Majority founder's barbed commentary on contemporary matters such as gay Americans made him a reviled figure to some and a pioneering conservative crusader to others.

Following the San Bernardino shootings, which left 14 dead, Falwell said he began carrying a .25-caliber handgun in his back pocket. He said he's had a permit for more than year.

During his address Friday, Falwell mentioned the weapon and reached around seemingly to fetch it.

"Is it illegal to pull it out? I don't know," he said, laughing, drawing some hoots from the audience.

Asked if he was concerned by the prospect of thousands of armed young people on campus, Falwell said Virginia has a minimum age of 21 for a carry-conceal permit. He said that meant only older students would be armed.

More than 14,000 students are enrolled at Liberty.

Falwell said he had also reached out to a first responder in San Bernardino to see if the school could offer scholarship assistance to his children.

Falwell's remarks were first reported by the News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1Na9kYd ).

Shooting at Muslims with a .25 cal, is just trolling for a jihad. He's just asking for his 72 virgins.

He's not made as many enemies as his father but he is a high-profile target and has legit concerns.

He might be targeted by a jihadi, by a crazed nutjob, etc.

So he isn't totally defenseless with his little .25 but he also knows he can't hope to stop a serious attack (like San Bernardino) with any concealed handgun he might carry. And not everyone is a marksman or a handgun wizard either.

Falwell was profiling Muzzies? Shucks, I do that all of the time. All of us had better do it. We aren't being surrounded by the Indians anymore, and we aren't the Seventh Calvary.

"Is it illegal to pull it out?

Falwell seems to have missed the Christian message and compromised for publicity.

Jesus only thought two swords were necessary when he was going to face an angry mob, but Falwell wants 100 or more and Jesus knew there is an emenent threat and Falwell does not

Why can't the carry be an open carry?. Why does it need to be concealed? But of course the question is why does it need to be a carry at all. Is Falwell's christian faith too small?

Jesus is God and as He said, He could have a legion of Angels to protect Him. The statement about the two swords was another lesson for us. Jesus didn't object to weapons in the hands of His followers.

Duhhhhh! Think maybe the fact that he runs a Christian school and Christians are the number 1 target of Muslims might have something to do with that?

He clearly knows nothing about guns or calibers, and is clearly too ignorant and arrogant to ask anyone.

The .25 might be his personal popgun. He is likely to also have a bodyguard or two. Trump says that he carries a handgun but the guns that really count belong to his bodyguards/chauffeurs. Trump probably travels with a minimum of 2-4 bodyguards at all times. Even with his new Secret Service detail, I expect Trump is still paying for a lot of his own security as well. But with SS, he gets more info on possible hostiles in a political campaign, something his own security might not be able to provide. The SS has a lot of information resources.

Falwell (and Trump) may be more afraid of a jihadi or nutjob in some instance where his bodyguards are not immediately present, like inside his office or home or in a public bathroom.

I'm betting Trump never goes into a public restroom without having his bodyguards clear it out first, and then guard the door to keep anyone else from coming in while he is in there.

When?

matthew 26:52 2 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled."

Way I see it Christians can carry weapons if they want to but when it comes to using them a great deal of patience is needed

I have seen no verse in the Holy Bible that bans self-defense. Nor is killing in a time of war banned.

matter of definition.

define war, define self defense.

Is a war we have declared the same as when we are attacked? Is it self defence when you are part of the aggressor army and an enemy soldier approaches you and you kill him.

Right now we have a war on terror, is this a real war? Is the war being fought today the same war as 15 years ago. I try not to justify my actions from the Bible particularly not where violence is concerned. I know I can rely on the mercy and justice of God. In any of this I am not saying Daesh is not evil and evil should be opposed however the Daesh are like the amalekites of the OT. We know the judgement God pronounced for them but we are above such remedies or we think we are. Let us hope it doesn't take as long to eliminate Daesh as it took Israel to eliminate the amalekites

And Trump may carry a gun for just those situations where he should feel the most secure.

But what if some small guy hid in a big trashcan under garbage or hid in an air vent? That would seem to be where Trump would want a small handgun. For when he should be safe but a determined assassin might get him, especially if he has no personal protection at all. And there is always the chance of being betrayed by a trusted bodyguard.

Basically, the common soldier doesn't have anything to do with starting a war. That is up to the leaders. Any blame is connected to the ones who direct evil acts. Remember the Nuremberg Trials? Common soldiers weren't tried, leaders were. Individual consciences are a different matter. Murder can be committed in a war, and American soldiers have been tried for murder.

so there are no accomplices in war? No, sicophants who go along and multiply the acts? I don't believe it. What you are saying will exonerate every deash muslim grunt because he is only doning what he is told. It doesn't wash with me, they couldn't try the whole Nazi army but they should have. Many of those soldiers were complicit.

Those americans who directed right up to General, and those who carried out the attack on the hospital in Afghanistan should be tried for murder. A successful prosecution will make the military more careful in the future, the americans are legend for fucked up friendly fire incidents

Friendly fire incidents are mistakes. Unfortunately perhaps, humans make mistakes. From what I have heard, some mistakes in Vietnam weren't quite mistakes, but sneakypete might have something to add.

As I said, G.I.s have been court- martialled for committing crimes during war. As for other armies, we aren't responsible for the world.

If he does have a weapon, Falwell does need a more serious firearm. Nothing smaller than a 380 ACP.
