The emperor continues to pursue a strategic objective that is totally unachievable. We will not commit the degree of military power needed to ensure that Assad falls or the Islamic State is destroyed. We are not alone in this . Russia is also in danger of mission creep. Loyalist forces have made slight gains in eastern Aleppo since the Russian intervention. But they are not close to a decisive gain ,and in fact ,the so called FSA has made gains in Hama and Latakia provinces.The Russians are also gradually increasing . What they have done pretty much is create a stalemate . If this continues ,without a prospect of a negotiated settlement;this will be a bloody sectarian civil war for years to come. To: paraclete (#2) nah , wars aren't won in the air (unless nukes are used ). The Russians are bombing anti-Assad forces and the US generally attack pro-Assad forces. Yes neither side appears interested in fighting that war, which begs the question is Daesh an instrument of the west. They haven't actually done Assad much harm, just upset western allies and puppet states. Daesh doesn't appear to have much interest in fighting the shiia, just securing sunni lands.
