I am not retired nor do I plan to be retired for years to come. I am gainfully employed and have private insurance covering my family through my employer. I am not eligible for Medicare.

Yet, I receive all kinds of emails, direct mailings and other advertising about Medicare all the tyme. What is Medicare? Is it another socialistic attempt to destroy my life-style?

I won't be any help. All I know, or think I know, is when you turn 65-years-old you have to (goobermint sez so) sign on for some sort of Medicare plan. I have a few friends in that age group.

Not sure of the details - some sort of plan A or B or sumpin' along those lines.

Fred - I never really evaluated my taxes for specific government required programs; I just pay and pay and pay; I guess that is my failure. Medicare is a tax, isn't it? So, I have been taxed by the US government for Medicare throughout my life.

What does Medicare do for me or my family when I don't need or want it? Do I receive Medicare benefits in a foreign counry?

You are automatically eligible for Medicare when you reach your full retirement age (maybe earlier) whether you are otherwise insured or not. Medicare A is free. You will have to pay for B,C and D but you do not have to take either of them and just take A (which is free) - so might as well enroll in at least A. As long as you are employed your employer provided insurance will be primary and any Medicare part will be secondary. If you can continue your employer provided insurance into your retirement all Medicare parts will be primary and your employer provided insurance will be secondary. If you do not enroll in B et. al at the time of employment you can only enroll during the annual designated period and will have to pay a higher premium for B et.al. which increase each year you delay enrollment.

I know this because I have yet to retire but enrolled in Part A when I was first eligible and deferred action on B et.al. My employer provided insurance is still primary and Medicare A secondary. In fact when I retire I will keep my employer provided insurance and enroll in at least Part B. Medicare does not pay 100% of its eligible expenses but my employer provided insurance will pay Medicare eligible expenses what Medicare does not, including presecription drugs. My calculations show that the additional premium for B will be more than justified to have it and still continue to pay the premium on my employer provided insurance at retirement.

On balance Medicare is generally a positive benefit, especially to those over 65, and especially to those that do not have or cannot continue with employer insurance into retirement, not an attempt to destroy your life. This is generally true even if you are self-employed and have private insurance.

Provides free hospital coverage at least for you under Part A. It will also pay much of your likely other medical expenses under Part B et.al. There is no reason why you and/or your spouse should not enroll in at least Part A when you first become eligible. In general your adult kids (which I guess means 26+ these days) will have to fend for themself. I do not believe that Medicare covers your dependent children either. You would have to look to Social Security for financial support in the event you and/or employed spouse become disabled - depending on circumstances that may be an uphill battle.

As long as you remain a citizen of the U.S. you can keep your Medicare coverage irrespective of where you live. Finding a provider in a foreign country that will take Medicare insurance OTOH may be problematical.

Medicare like Social Security is considered an 'insurance' that you pay now for benefits later . It is automatically taken out of payroll so most people don't even know how much they pay week to week.

As with most SS ,the money gets plundered to pay for the general operations of the government . What they do is put IOUs in the guise of bonds to replace the $$$ stolen from the trust fund. Combined SS and Medicare have unfunded liabilities in the $$$ trillions .In 2013 ,the unfunded liability in Medicare was $34 trillion over the next 75 years. The (CBO)Congressional Budget Office in 2012, reported that the long term shortfall is more than $100 trillion. That is many times more than the total annual economy of the US. The gap separating the present value of all future projected federal expenditures...Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, ObamaCare, defense, gassing up Air Force One to take the emperor on vacation and to Paris so he can promise more redistribution of American taxpayer money , servicing the debt, against ALL federal taxes and other receipts is, based on the CBO's projections, $222 trillion. In other words ,we are screwed .

The government has been trying to make up the short fall in $$ for Medicare by screwing the doctors and other providers taking care of Medicare patients. In 2013 there was a 25% decrease in the fees that Medicare pays doctors. That means that every doctor in America who participates in Medicare took a 25% pay cut. The reason has nothing to do with ObamaCare. In the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, Congress declared that Medicare physician fees could grow no faster than the economy as a whole. Since then, though, Congress has postponed the adjustments on 14 occasions, not allowing them to take place.

But Obamacare definitely takes it's toll on Medicare .In order to pay for the expansion of health insurance for the young, Obamacare calls for steep cuts in the growth of health care spending on the elderly. Remember ,the emperor said sometimes it was better for granny to take a pill rather than get that expensive surgery . From this is where rumors of 'death panels ' come from. The system will be making hard choices on who gets treatment and how much.

That of course assumes that there will still be providers willing to take Medicare patients. Medicare's Office of the Actuary is predicting that one in seven hospitals will completely leave the Medicare system by 2020 because of cuts. http://www.nationalcenter.org/PR-Medicare_Doctors_120214.html

Yes, but only if you don't already have health insurance.

For example, if you're over 65 but still working and have health insurance through your employer, you can keep it and you don't have to sign up for Medicare.

Yes, Medicare is free, but Medicare only covers hospital charges (Part A). It does not cover doctor fees/office visits (Part B), prescriptions (Part D), etc.

Private insurance companies compete for Part B and Part D coverage.
