I am gainfully employed and have private insurance covering my family through my employer. I am not eligible for Medicare. Yet, I receive all kinds of emails, direct mailings and other advertising about Medicare all the tyme. What is Medicare? Is it another socialistic attempt to destroy my life-style? All I know, or think I know, is when you turn 65-years-old you have to (goobermint sez so) sign on for some sort of Medicare plan. I have a few friends in that age group. Not sure of the details - some sort of plan A or B or sumpin' along those lines. Ask nolu, he'll post a ten mile long reply. To: Fred Mertz (#1) Fred - I never really evaluated my taxes for specific government required programs; I just pay and pay and pay; I guess that is my failure. Medicare is a tax, isn't it? So, I have been taxed by the US government for Medicare throughout my life. What does Medicare do for me or my family when I don't need or want it? Provides free hospital coverage at least for you under Part A. It will also pay much of your likely other medical expenses under Part B et.al. There is no reason why you and/or your spouse should not enroll in at least Part A when you first become eligible. In general your adult kids (which I guess means 26+ these days) will have to fend for themself. I do not believe that Medicare covers your dependent children either. You would have to look to Social Security for financial support in the event you and/or employed spouse become disabled - depending on circumstances that may be an uphill battle. As long as you remain a citizen of the U.S. you can keep your Medicare coverage irrespective of where you live. Finding a provider in a foreign country that will take Medicare insurance OTOH may be problematical.
