During the November 20 airing of Real Time with Bill Maher, California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) pro-gun control comments were countered by Maher’s observation that being armed during a Paris-style attack would at least give citizens a fighting chance to survive. According to MRC/Newsbusters, Maher stepped in to defend the option of being armed for self-defense after Newsom dismissed the idea of a good guy with a gun having any real success against bad guys with guns. Newsom said, “I just simply, this sort of mythology, the guy with the gun that’s going to come save the day, I mean, so right out of the movies, sort of this gun-slinging fantasy. The reality is, it’s most likely to create more harm, more damage, more lost lives in those circumstances.” Surprised by Newsom’s willingness to accept the paradigm of citizens remaining unarmed in such a setting, Maher responded, “Really? So if you were in a restaurant and a crazy gunman came in, you wouldn’t want to have a gun? You’d rather just be shot?” Newsom responded by suggesting that citizens without proper training might just start shooting in response and make things worse. They might get nervous and “start pointing the trigger or pointing a gun and shooting.” Again, Maher countered by trying to get Newsom to listen to himself. Maher said, “But hasn’t the worst thing already happened? A crazed madman who’s bent on killing everyone? Being armed doesn't give you any more chance, if a terrorist or group of terrorists begins shooting at you with a military weapon are you going to shoot back or duck for cover? If a suicide bomber detonates a vest nearby how will being armed help you? This is the falacy of the armed debate. If a local militia is being formed because there is a clear enemy then being armed may help you. The real question in these situations is what training do you have and do you place yourself at greater risk by becoming a combatant, even a risk of being misidentified by police
Well, I imagine that when a terrorist is firing at a bunch of people, someone might have a chance to get off some rounds. It beats going belly up and letting someone shoot you. The French did that. It didn't work so well for them.

The question is whether you are in your head or in reality. a well trained person might get in a shot anyoneelse just becomes a greater target and you won't know whether the person next to you has a suicide vest or not so a gun is no defense unless the dope is just standing there waiting. The french has no ability to defend because in the ordinary course of events who would be armed anyway. it is a nonsense that people should go around armed it just gives the terrorist more opportunity because they will be less obvious. Yes there is risk. Given certain death of family and neighboring innocent blood, I would take risk over certain bloodshed. I believe we have a brain between our ears for a reason. So I will take risk over most certain death. If I had the means to save a child, my own family any innocent bystanders and had a gun, I'm taking the shot. If the cops show up the gun goes to the floor. No fallacy in the armed debate. The absolute for armed response is sound, but your argument focuses on the particulars. You added military style weapons and suicide vests. Yes difficult to counter for someone who buys a gun, carries it and has no training. Training is responsible gun ownership. I can assure you I would be able to take a pistol and dispatch a terrorist with an assault rifle. And yes I have the training to do so. I truly believe the authors of the Constitution did not craft the 2nd Amendment with the thought that the mentally ill and incompetent should be armed to the teeth. That is not even a matter of law. It is basic adult responsibility. Also every gun owner I know are retired or former military. Even with years of training in fire arms most still take the NRA safety and shooting instruction. Do you believe if you have the means to protect innocent blood you have a moral obligation to defend such? Not really asking for an answer but making a point. It is a conscience decision. If there is an active shooter in a museum full of children I would be compelled to defend them with my life. Notice I did not say if I had a gun. But if I did it would improve my chances of successful defense. No bravado there I assure you. Just how I am wired. So you agree that it is ridiculous for the police to be similarly armed, correct? Because your argument is stating that it is useless to have a gun because it makes you a target and will get you killed, not make you safer. I also like the line "You need to learn that if it is your time you will go anyway and if it's not you will survive." Try telling that to the police with the "officer safety" mentality! --Paraclete obviously believes that *all* of society should be unarmed and ready for the terrorist to provide you with your time to die. Although possibly mis-attributed to Isoroku Yamamoto about attacking the American mainland, this quote does make a valid point - an enemy that fears its adversaries unknown strength thinks twice before attacking. On the other hand, an enemy that knows the adversary's weakness will take full advantage of such fact. Just put a sign out in your front lawn proclaiming that: "This is a gun-free property - Terrorist are welcome!"
Americans are in the habit of protecting themselves when necessary. Many of us have been dumbed down and turned into wimps. It would be a mistake to think that applies to all Americans. For the terrorists it might well be a fatal error. If you want to carry a doll in place of a weapon, feel free to do so.

Yeah, I have talked to a few gun carriers. There can be a cowboy mentality concerning the use of firearms. Gun carriers have to not only know the proper functioning of the weapon, they have to know when to use it.

Mr. Newsom claims we are arming terrorists because the 2,000 people on the no- fly list are allowed to buy guns. If they're terrorists, why aren't they arrested? Answer: Because they're not terrorists. Their name is on that list because the TSA made a “predictive assessment about a potential threat”. "Pre-crime" for fans of Minority Report. Meaning people are on this secret list because someone at TSA thought they should be. And Mr. Newson believes that's reason enough to deny someone their second amendment right to keep and bear arms. How long before that no-fly list is expanded to 200,000 names? 2 million names?
