Terrorism on American Soil—Are You Prepared?

By Dave Dolbee published on November 19, 2015 in Camping & Survival

September was National Preparedness Month; so by now, we should all have supplies ready for any natural disaster that could happen. However, recent events suggest the biggest threat on the horizon may not be natural at all. Instead, it is much more sinister and perhaps more deadly. It strikes with little—if any—warning and anyone, anywhere around the globe, may be the victim of its wrath. We need to prepare for something much more horrifying than Mother Nature. Are you prepared for the fallout from a terrorist attack?

Terrorist attacks

Much of the world stood aghast as the recent terror attacks in Paris France unfolded. The world’s intelligence agencies have been saying for months that ISIS did not have the capability to project its power. Other attacks were lone-wolf inspired. There was also President Obama’s extremely off-base analysis that ISIS is a JV team, which makes you wonder how secure we really are and how serious the country is taking the threat. As recently as the week before the attack in Paris, the President was again downplaying the threat. Will he ever learn?

The Paris attacks proved they were all wrong. ISIS, ISIL, or whatever you want to call it, is real and it is coming. You cannot contain that type of threat. You either wipe it out, or it hurts you. The bad news is that our forces are not going to be unleashed anytime soon. The current Administration is more than content to leave ISIS to its successor or another country. Meanwhile, the United States has already accepted thousands of ‘refugees’ from Syria.

Do you believe it is too late to ‘close the barn doors’ here at home and prevent an attack?

The 9/11 Memorial in New York Remembering 9/11: Terrorism strikes with little—if any—warning and anyone, anywhere around the globe, may be the victim of its wrath.

Our intelligence methods and sources are being degraded as the terrorists get more sophisticated. For instance, there is a little thing called the “darknet.” The darknet is an Internet system of networking that uses specific protocols and encrypting. Primarily used for illegal peer-to-peer file sharing, it has been adopted for use by sophisticated terror organizations. The servers and communication lines are often hosted in unfriendly countries such as Russia, making it much more difficult for U.S. intelligence sources to penetrate. The are also encrypted communications and instant message services the U.S. does not have backdoor access to monitor.

In the past, following military doctrine, the U.S. looked to disrupt any one of the critical three Cs—Command, Control, Communications. Eliminate any one of the three, and the enemy will be seriously degraded. In the past, this strategy reduced the Al Qaeda threat significantly. However, newer technology and less cooperation from friendly nations have made this more of a challenge—if not outright impossible in today’s environment.

Likely Attacks

Terrorist with a fake bomb in a training scenario While large coordinated attacks are of major concern, smaller lone wolf-style attacks are more likely to affect each of us.

We all wish there was a crystal ball to foresee the threat. There isn’t one; however, we can put together a few pieces of information to make predictions. We know the terrorists like significant dates or events. The Twin Towers came down on 9/11, the London Bombings were on 7/7—killing 52 and injuring over 700—and the Mumbai bombing on 7/11. The Paris attacks were on Friday the 13th. All of these numbers are significant. Looking back, we know the significance of Friday the 13th. On October (Friday) 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France, with the assistance of Pope Clement V, ordered all Knights Templar arrested. The act was considered by many to be a war on religion. The arrest warrant began, “Dieu n’est pas content, nous avons des ennemis de la foi dans le Royaume.” (“God is not pleased. We have enemies of the faith in the kingdom.”)

Is that a stretch? It is hard to say. And it is always easier to try to make a connection after the fact than predict the future. Even if it gives us a day, it would not give us a location. What we do know, however, is that ISIS will strike again, and if not ISIS, then another terror group. You need to be prepared.

Make a Plan

While large coordinated attacks are of major concern, smaller lone wolf-style attacks are more likely to affect each of us. Adequately preparing for these types of attacks can help minimize the impact. What would you add to the list in preparation against the imminent threat of a terrorist attack? •Firearms and ammo, match their firepower with the AK-47, AR-15 or 12-gauge shotgun •Dust or gas masks, plastic sheeting and duct tape, to help filter and seal-out contaminated air •Hammer, nails and wood to board up windows •Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation •Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food •Solar or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both •Flashlight and extra batteries •First Aid Kit •Emergency two-way communications •Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation •Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities •Can opener for food •Local maps •Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

I know Donald Trump said it, perhaps others did as well, but this would have been much harder in the U.S. Unlike France, we have a Second Amendment and an armed citizenry is a great defense.

Get proficient with your firearms and carry for your own personal protection.

Conclusion

If successfully attempted or carried out, do you think an attack would be a small-scale local event like the Boston Marathon bombings or something larger such as an attack on the electrical grid or water supplies? What supplies or preparations do you think are necessary for an active shooter situation or mass casualty?

Add your suggestions and ideas and lists in the comment section and we will compile and publish them for the entire community.

My girlfriend cooked her version of fried chicken tonight.
She's getting worse at it. And I don't know how to break
the news to her. She adds too much paprika, turmeric and salt.
Other than that it's fine. Otherwise, inedible.

KFC Original Recipe Chicken (Copycat) Improv Chicken (2:11)

Prep 2 hrs 30 mins

Cook 1 hr

A reverse-engineered recipe for replicating KFC's 'Original Recipe' chicken at home. Yields 8-10 pieces whole fried chicken, or up to 16 drumsticks. For a bulk mix seasoning for quick and easy breading, use Bulk KFC Original Recipe Seasoning (Copycat). PLEASE NOTE: The Nutritional Information listing here is inaccurate -- since only a fraction of flour and salt actually end up in the finished product. So be aware -- the suggested sodium, sugar, carbohydrate and calorie levels are ridiculously exaggerated!More

Check Out Our Top Chicken Recipe

Directions

NOTES: PREPARE RECIPE EXACTLY AS DIRECTED.

DO NOT OMIT ACCENT SEASONING (IT LENDS THE AUTHENTIC SWEET FLAVOR). EGG WHITE POWDER IS SOLD IN HEALTH FOOD STORES. YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE EGG WHITE POWDER WITH 1/2 TEASPOON XANTHAN GUM (ALSO SOLD IN HEALTH FOOD STORES).

FINELY GRIND REQUIRED HERBS AND SPICES SEPARATELY IN A CLEAN SPICE MILL OR COFFEE GRINDER. USE A PEPPER MILL TO MEDIUM-GRIND TELLICHERRY PEPPERCORNS. I RECOMMEND MCCORMICK BRAND TELLICHERRY BLACK PEPPER AND SMOKED PAPRIKA, SPICE ISLANDS BRAND GROUND SAGE AND CARDAMOM, SPICE APPEAL BRAND GROUND SAVORY, AND WILLIAMS-SONOMA BRAND GROUND TAHITIAN VANILLA BEAN.

USE ONLY LAWRY'S SEASONED SALT FOR THE BARBECUE SEASONING. CHICKEN NOTES: DO NOT DOUBLE-BREAD CHICKEN SINCE IT PLACES AN EXCESS OF SODIUM AND SPICES ONTO FINAL PRODUCT AND COMPROMISES AUTHENTICITY (IF YOU INSIST ON DOUBLE-BREADING, DIFFUSE THE BREADING MIX FIRST BY ADDING A LITTLE MORE UNSEASONED FLOUR). BRINING BONELESS CHICKEN SHOULD BE DONE MUCH MORE QUICKLY (NO MORE THAN 45 MINUTES, TO AVOID OVER-SATURATION OF SALT). BONELESS CHICKEN COOKS MUCH MORE QUICKLY THAN BONE-IN CHICKEN (BE CAREFUL TO NOT OVERCOOK!). FRYING FAT NOTES: ALWAYS BEGIN WITH FRESH VEGETABLE OIL. AFTER USING LET IT COOL. FILTER, THEN REFRIGERATE TIGHTLY SEALED TO YIELD 6-12 FRYING BATCHES, REPLENISHING OIL AS NEEDED.

RINSE and blot chicken; CUT chicken into 8 pieces (or 10 pieces with breast portions cut in half); MIX 2 quarts (8 cups) cups cold water with 2 tablespoons Morton Lite Salt (OR 2 tablespoons fine sea salt), and 2 teaspoons Accent seasoning in a large container with an accompanying lid, until dissolved; ADD chicken pieces; COVER and transfer to refrigerator; MARINATE chicken at least 4 hours in refrigerator. NOTE: FOR A QUICKER STOVETOP MARINATION METHOD, PIERCE CHICKEN PIECES WELL WITH A FORK, THEN HEAT THE MARINADE WITH CHICKEN, COVERED, OVER LOW HEAT UNTIL HEATED THROUGH, TURNING ONCE).

MEASURE the BASE MIXTURE and 11 SECRET HERBS AND SPICES into a large re- sealable container (this includes the prepared BARBECUE SEASONING); BREAK up any clumps (and nonfat milk granules) using the back of a spoon; SEAL the container with mixture; SHAKE to mix well; OPEN container and add the BREADING FLOUR (2 cups unbleached bread flour), then seal the container again; SHAKE well until thoroughly combined.

REMOVE chicken from brine; PLACE one piece chicken at a time into the breading mixture container; SEAL container firmly; SHAKE chicken gently in all motions to thoroughly coat chicken until evenly and generously breaded; PLACE breaded chicken piece onto a rack to rest; REPEAT with remaining pieces chicken; ALLOW breaded chicken to absorb the breading for a few minutes before frying. ADD the manufacturer's recommended amount frying oil for deep-frying; PLACE deep-fryer basket into place in deep-fryer; PREHEAT fryer to 315°F (or preheat enough fat to immerse chicken completely in deep heavy stovetop pot between 315° F to 325°F, using a standard deep-fryer thermometer to gauge). CAREFULLY drop each piece breaded chicken one at a time, gently into the deep- fryer basket without crowding (if a standard size home fryer is used, add no more than 2-3 pieces at a time); (if stovetop frying, gently place breaded chicken pieces into hot oil using tongs, turning once halfway through frying duration).

FRY chicken between 15-18 minutes until golden brown and fully cooked, depending on chicken portions/sizes (juices should run clear when chicken is done); BLOT chicken lightly to absorb excess oil; PLACE cooked chicken into a large resealable container to steam (the steam will soften the breading for added Original Recipe authenticity. If you prefer crisp breading, skip this procedure).

MAINTAIN frying fat temperature for each new batch and repeat the same cooking/steaming procedures for the remaining chicken. REHEAT chicken if necessary before serving in a microwave oven, using a reduced- power setting, as if reheating 2 frozen pastries, pausing in intervals to turn chicken for even heating if necessary. SERVE and enjoy!

Classic Southern Fried Chicken

By Diana Rattray

Southern Food Expert

This is a basic southern fried chicken recipe, and it's absolutely delicious. Serve fried chicken with mashed potatoes and coleslaw, along with steamed broccoli or other favorite side dish.

Ingredients

•4 pounds chicken pieces

•1 1/2 cups milk

•2 large eggs

•2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

•2 tablespoons salt

•2 teaspoons pepper

•3 cups vegetable oil

•salt

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 70 minutes

Yield: 4 Servings

Preparation

Combine milk and eggs in a bowl; whisk to blend well.

In a large heavy-duty resealable plastic food storage bag, combine the flour, salt, and pepper.

Dip a chicken piece in the milk mixture; let excess drip off into bowl. Put a few chicken pieces in the food storage bag and shake lightly to coat thoroughly. Remove to a plate and repeat with remaining chicken pieces.

Heat oil in a deep, heavy skillet to 350°.

•Recipe

Fry the chicken, a few pieces at a time, for about 10 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Chicken breasts will take a little less time than other pieces.

Pierce with a fork to see if juices run clear to check for doneness.

With a slotted spoon, move to paper towels to drain; sprinkle with salt.
