LEFT WING LOONS Title: THE REVENGE OF THE CODDLED: AN INTERVIEW WITH JONATHAN HAIDT I recently had a chance to speak with Dr. Jonathan Haidt, a psychologist and professor of business ethics at New York University-Stern School of Business, whose book, The Righteous Mind, discusses the emotional justification of modern-day ethical beliefs and political divides. Recently, he wrote a landmark article for The Atlantic with Greg Lukianoff, The Coddling of the American Mind, about the culture of oversensitivity on university campuses. This coddling culture, a term coined by Haidt and Lukianoff, has been criticized by conservativesas would be expectedbut also liberals, including President Obama. According to Haidt, this is causing a quietly growing rift: between the liberal Left and the illiberal Left. So who supports this coddling? We need a reorganization of priorities, according to Haidt. He likes the framework of diversity, but instead of racial and gender diversity, he says we need to begin emphasizing viewpoint diversity. Fear reigns on campuses now. (See the recent essay on Vox entitled, Im a liberal professor, and my liberal students terrify me.) Haidt relates his reticence to speak openly about the coddled culture: So how do we move forward, out of this vindictive attack culture? Think young. Poster Comment: Interview continues at link. "Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near"---Isaiah 55:6
This culture arises from an alarmist age where every threat, no matter how insufficient or far away is trotted out as eminent and next door. Obviously people want to protect their kids from pedophiles, from bullies, from the sight of the unseamly. Once people were too busy to give it more than passing attention but now with gun violence in schools, etc the pendulum has swung. Where kids could find their way to and from school, now they must be delivered and picked up, even signed for as if they have no brain, no sense. It carries into what can be said and done who you can associate with. Were we better off with segregated and gender specific schools where there could be concentration on the essentials and less emphasis on social interaction
