Get two buckets. One fill half and half ice /water. The other bucket warm water. Then place hands in ice bucket until you had enough then place in warm water. Repeat a few times. It will work wonders. Beats medicines every time.

Or just take a hammer to your toe and you will forget the hand.
Seriously...hope you feel better CW. Don't take my advice above:)
Justified's advice seems good. Works for pulled muscles.
I use it on my hands because of my job and stuff I did as a kid. There are times I can't hardly close close my hand to hold things. I hate taking drugs and asper cream/ben gay is ok but I found ice water and warm water worked best for me.
Try skipping the ice, which only makes arthritis worse, and go straight to the hot water. When my hands get to the point I can't close them enough to hold anything,I just soak them in hot tap water for a few minutes, and keep flexing them while doing so. Works wonders.
I sometimes do skip the ice but I find to be really effective you have to use ice to get the swelling down and bouncing back in forth gets the blood to pump in the areas.
