The president of the University of Missouri system resigned Monday with the football team and others on campus in open revolt over what they saw as his indifference to racial tensions at the school.

President Tim Wolfe, a former business executive with no previous experience in academic leadership, took "full responsibility for the frustration" students expressed and said their complaints were "clear" and "real."

For months, black student groups had complained that Wolfe was unresponsive to racial slurs and other slights on the overwhelmingly white flagship campus of the state's four-college system. The complaints came to a head two days ago, when at least 30 black football players announced that they would not play until the president was gone. One student went on a weeklong hunger strike.

Wolfe's announcement came at the start of what had been expected to be a lengthy closed-door meeting of the school's governing board.

"This is not the way change comes about," he said, alluding to recent protests, in a halting statement that was simultaneously apologetic, clumsy and defiant. "We stopped listening to each other."

He urged students, faculty and staff to use the resignation "to heal and start talking again to make the changes necessary."

A poor audio feed for the one board member who was attending the meeting via conference call left Wolfe standing awkwardly at the podium for nearly three minutes after reading only one sentence.

In response to the race complaints, Wolfe had taken little action and made few public statements. As students leveled more grievances this fall, he was increasingly seen as aloof, out of touch and insensitive to their concerns. He soon became the protesters' main target.

In a statement issued Sunday, Wolfe acknowledged that "change is needed" and said the university was working to draw up a plan by April to promote diversity and tolerance. But by the end of that day, a campus sit-in had grown in size, graduate student groups planned walkouts and politicians began to weigh in.

After the resignation announcement, students and teachers in Columbia hugged and chanted.

Sophomore Katelyn Brown said she wasn't necessarily aware of chronic racism at the school, but she applauded the efforts of black students groups.

"I personally don't see it a lot, but I'm a middle-class white girl," she said. "I stand with the people experiencing this." She credited social media with propelling the protests, saying it "gives people a platform to unite."

Head football coach Gary Pinkel expressed solidarity with players on Twitter, posting a picture of the team and coaches locking arms. The tweet said: "The Mizzou Family stands as one. We are united. We are behind our players."

Pinkel and athletic director Mack Rhoades linked the return of the football players to the end of a hunger strike by a black graduate student named Jonathan Butler, who stopped eating Nov. 2 and vowed not to eat until Wolfe was gone.

After Wolfe's announcement, Butler said in a tweet that his strike was over. He appeared weak and unsteady as two people helped him into a sea of celebrants on campus. Many broke into dance at seeing him.

Football practice was to resume Tuesday ahead of Saturday's game against Brigham Young University at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs.

The protests began after the student government president, who is black, said in September that people in a passing pickup truck shouted racial slurs at him. In early October, members of a black student organization said slurs were hurled at them by an apparently drunken white student.

Frustrations flared again during a homecoming parade, when black protesters blocked Wolfe's car, and he did not get out and talk to them. They were removed by police.

Also, a swastika drawn in feces was found recently in a dormitory bathroom.

The university did take some steps to ease tensions. At the request of Columbia campus Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin, the university announced plans to offer diversity training to all new students, faculty and staff starting in January. On Friday, the chancellor issued an open letter decrying racism after the swastika was found.

Many of the protests have been led by an organization called Concerned Student 1950, which gets its name from the year the university accepted its first black student. Group members besieged Wolfe's car at the parade, and they have been conducting a sit-in on a campus plaza since last Monday.

Also joining in the protest effort were two graduate student groups that called for walkouts Monday and Tuesday and the student government at the Columbia campus, the Missouri Students Association.

On Sunday, the association said in a letter to the system's governing body that there had been "an increase in tension and inequality with no systemic support" since last year's fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, which is about 120 miles east of Columbia.

Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old, was shot and killed by a white police officer during a struggle, and his death helped spawn the "Black Lives Matter" movement rebuking police treatment of minorities.

The association said Wolfe headed a university leadership that "undeniably failed us and the students that we represent."

"He has not only enabled a culture of racism since the start of his tenure in 2012, but blatantly ignored and disrespected the concerns of students," the group wrote.

The Concerned Student group demanded, among other things, that Wolfe "acknowledge his white male privilege" and that the school adopt a mandatory racial-awareness program and hire more black faculty and staff.

The school's undergraduate population is 79 percent white and 8 percent black. The state is about 83 percent white and nearly 12 percent black.

Wolfe, 57, is a former software executive and Missouri business school graduate whose father taught at the university. He was hired as president in 2011, succeeding another former executive with no experience in academia.

A new power source has arisen. Student athletes stood up, and a university president was gone a couple of days later. Millions of dollars are at stake in every football game. University presidents can be bought by the dozens for that money.

The power of the student athlete has been perceived by the students themselves. We shall see more of it. This was only the beginning.

I. We demand that the University of Missouri System President, Tim Wolfe, writes a handwritten apology to the Concerned Student 1-9-5-0 demonstrators and holds a press conference in the Mizzou Student Center reading the letter. In the letter and at the press conference, Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege, recognize that systems of oppression exist, and provide a verbal commitment to fulfilling Concerned Student 1-9-5-0 demands. We want Tim Wolfe to admit to his gross negligence, allowing his driver to hit one of the demonstrators, consenting to the physical violence of bystanders, and lastly refusing to intervene when Columbia Police Department used excessive force with demonstrators.

II. We demand the immediate removal of Tim Wolfe as UM system president. After his removal a new amendment to UM system policies must be established to have all future UM system president and Chancellor positions be selected by a collective of students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds.

III. We demand that the University of Missouri meets the Legion of Black Collegians' demands that were presented in 1969 for the betterment of the black community.

IV. We demand that the University of Missouri creates and enforces comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff, and administration. This curriculum must be vetted, maintained, and overseen by a board comprised of students, staff, and faculty of color.

V. We demand that by the academic year 2017-2018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campus-wide to 10%.

VI. We demand that the University of Missouri composes a strategic 10 year plan by May 1, 2016 that will increase retention rates for marginalized students, sustain diversity curriculum and training, and promote a more safe and inclusive campus.

VII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals -- particularly those of color, boosting mental health outreach and programming across campus, increasing campus-wide awareness and visibility of the counseling center, and reducing lengthy wait times for prospective clients.

VIII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding, resources, and personnel for the social justices centers on campus for the purpose of hiring additional professionals, particularly those of color, boosting outreach and programming across campus, and increasing campus-wide awareness and visibility.

List of demands by the students...

Yes but the Ents found out Sauramon was burning their forests.

The President of the university was a poor choice with no experience running an academic institution. Most don't have experience given the position is figurative to add prestige to the university. Most usually listen to their deputies like the Prussian generals listened to their general staff.

So this guy probably did not accept the advice of his deputies. The advice was most likely to make a firm public statement, assign security to investigate the claims and reassure the safety of the student body. If he did that, he probably would still have his job. But maybe not.

It is possible the claims were fabricated by a few to stir up a resistance to make demands. The article linked this university movement to the Michael Brown death. Which given the evidence the police officer was cleared of all criminal charges. That really upset many because the press and mob rule on the streets already declared their verdict on the police officer before the grand jury put witnesses under oath. So now every racial match lit, turns into an opportunity to protest whether the claims are true or false.

The swastika with feces reminds me of the Tawana Brawley case. There was also a situation in another university last year where a student posted racial slurs on campus as part of a school project. She was a minority. It was not until the match was lit and spread to a brush fire that she admitted to doing it. She said she did it to see the reaction of the university but also to express what she 'knew' whites from privilege were thinking. We see that same mentality in this case where the demand was for the university's president to admit his white privilege. The thought police mentality is endemic of leftist and fascist ideology. Impose what you think they are thinking to rile up the troops. Worked in the 60s well.

This is a major problem. It is the tactics used for radicals with an agenda. And those rules for radicals don't let the facts get in the way of a good sit in or all out riot.

Sounds like the university president acted stupidly. He could have blown out the match right away. Someone probably told him how but he decided to be complacent.

He should have come out strong to vigorously investigate the racial claims. If found to be corroborated with eyewitness testimony, make the correct disciplinary actions.

But do you think for a moment the students would accept mere justice? I don't. Or worse...do you think they would accept hard data that someone lied, provided false witness, and nothing would be done save discipline the liars?

So what happens. The Ents rise up as you quote. But the Ents in this case might find out the Orcs put them up to it.

Wow did not see this until now.

What about the University's right to throw organizations off their private property?

Maybe different case as a State university. My college Fordham threw off campus every fraternity and student group which did not comply with university bylaws. Part of the bylaws was that no student group or student could block public access to university buildings, dormitories, and roads.

It's college for heaven's sake. Get to class you slackards!:)

They can only do that to white people. Blacks have special rights the rest of us don't enjoy.

The president wasn't fired. He tucked his tail between his legs and ran out of his office. The students protested and he literally ran away. He is probably a liberal whiner whose true character came out.

"Loftin's decision came after nine deans from nine different departments called for his dismissal in a letter sent Monday to Wolfe and the school's Board of Curators. "

It doesn't take an imagination to know what happen. He knew this was not going away since it was a "black thing". If it had been a black president you probably would have never heard one peep. Even if the president ran over a protester then raped them!

He will have a job by next semester.

Most university presidents are financially and career comfortable professionals who take the job to either use the time to relax and write their memoirs and then retire; or use the job to beef up a resume to further advance in their career within State or federal government. It is a position of prestige more than administration. The career administrators handle the running of school and faculty. The president shows up to board meetings and is involved in donation drives with affluent and influential alumni.

So why does someone who is either at the zenith of his career or relaxing end of it need this confrontation. Confrontation which already got physical and could harm him or others further. Basically given his position as a titular figure, he probably decided to go elsewhere. He probably took the pulse of the affluent donors who wanted to see that football game happen this Saturday.

According to the Athletic Coach, there was no talk about firing anyone in their discussions. You may be right about the president's motives. That position is mostly political and this particular person's degree is business. Another high official there also quit.

These people might run away, however, the problem is one of caving to the student's demands. It is the same as caving to the demands of terrorists.

You know how that works out. Tearing apart the fabric of this nation is the goal of our enemies. I can see a concentrated and winning effort to do that.

By the time these propagandized goofs are through receiving their demands, the place will be infused with inferior black professors presenting watered-down course content to guarantee the success of inferior black students in the name of social justice and a veneer of equality, a certificate of graduation from what was once Missouri's flagship university will be equivalent to a sheet of used toilet paper.
