ELMONT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A 9-year-old girl has died after being attacked by a pit bull while playing in the backyard of a Long Island home, police say.

At around 10:30 a.m., three police officers responded to a 911 call at a home on Holland Avenue in Elmont. They saw the male pitbull attacking the girl in the backyard, cops said. One of the officers entered the yard by going through the house. When the officer entered the yard, the dog charged toward her, police said. She fired several rounds, killing the dog.

“We don’t know what reason there is, but the dog then turned his anger…it was actually a violent attack on the girl,” Nassau County Police detective Michael Bitsko said.

Two other officer on the scene rushed to the aid of the girl. The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead by Franklin Hospital personnel at 1:42 p.m., according to police.

The girl was playing in the yard with two other children when the dog suddenly mauled her, 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reported. The woman who lives on the ground floor tried to stop the dog, but couldn’t. The police officer was treated but was not bitten by the dog, WCBS 880’s Ginny Kosola reported

Carlyle Arnold, 29, the owner of the dog, was arrested at the scene for an unrelated charge of Violation of Order of Protection, according to police.

Police said there is no criminality in regard to the attack.

Im not sure what the tally alone for this year is but pits murder more people than all other dog breeds combined. The closes second, rot, is 1/8 that of pits and the top 3 dogs breeds account for 83% of all deaths by dogs. These numbers are only going to get worse because the gangster mentality is taking over and its the breed of choice for those shitty people.

Insurance companies should ban those dogs from coverage due to lawsuits. That way dumb asses will not be able to have them.

They ought to be rounded up, but instead of putting them to sleep you put them on the border. Have a wall at the border, and if illegal aliens jump over it they'll just enter a pit bull cage.

A "top 3" list doesn't really convey the dangers from specific breeds since the #3 Husky has only killed a tenth as many as the #1 Pit Bull.

List Notes: Data is top 5 dog breeds involved in fatal attacks on human beings in the U.S. and Canada between the years 1982 and 2012. Data was compiled by the editor of ANIMAL PEOPLE from press accounts since 1982, this table covers only attacks by dogs of clearly identified breed type or ancestry, as designated by animal control officers or others with evident expertise, who have been kept as pets. All accounts were cross-checked by date, location, and identity of the victim. Attacks by police dogs, guard dogs, and dogs trained specifically to fight are also excluded. "Attacks doing bodily harm" includes all fatalities, maimings, and other injuries requiring extensive hospital treatment.

The people who train them to be killers need to be held accountable. They are not inherently "demon" dogs. If they are not trained to be aggressive then they aren't . Of course pits and their off breeds are involved in most of the attacks in the country (the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and any mixes or any dog that vaguely resembles these dogs). They are one of the most popular US breeds. The owner of this dog bragged on Facebook that the dog was a "Beast" ,so you know where he was coming from .

Pit Bulls have always been one of America's favorite dogs ;and yes ,kid friendly . 'Our Gang 'dog Petey was a pit . Up until the 1980s there was a total of one reported death from a pit bull attack. This recent attack was the 1st fatal one on record on Long Island (searching records going back to 1947) .

So what happened ? There was a comeback in dog fighting ,and pot growers began raising pit bulls and other large dogs to protect their fields.People began raising them to fight and as guard dogs instead of pets. That's when attacks increased ,and a national hysteria against pits began. Of the 50 pits that were seized from Michael Vick's fighting ring ,49 were rehabilitated and are loving family pets today. That being said ,they are not for everyone . Owners of the breed need to know that they have to be trained properly .They need exercise and any aggression not tolerated . Yes aggression can be an issue in a breed that has been trained to fight for years . But I also have to check the aggression of my cocker spaniel sometimes . If he ever attacked someone I would expect to the held fully accountable .

You are overestimating the danger cocker spaniels pose to the public. Pit bulls are much more dangerous and so are Rottweilers and mastiffs.

How often do cocker spaniels kill anyone? Maybe once in ten years?

Its their breeding. The fact that they have not turned to attack someone is more of a fluke than anything. I call them light switches. They can turn crazy for no reason like you flip a switch.

People really did not own these breeds until the 90's when the gangster mindset started. It really wasn't until the 2000 when it was the fad for mindless manchilds wanting them because they watch the rap videos and thought that was cool.

In less than 2(2014 to now) years the pits have murdered more 50 people. 27 last year and already 27 this year and we have almost 2 months left.

I remember when rots were the dog of choice for gangster mindset. Now its pits.

Do you really think thugs and wannabe thugs/posers living in gubbermint 'part-mints have even heard of homeowners insurance, never mind planned on buying any? Even if you sue them and win you are not going to get a cut of their gubbermint checks, and the same gubbermint owns that part-mint they live in and ain't going to let you seize that, either.

Maybe, but the only dog that has ever bit me was a cocker spaniel, and I have been to the homes of dozens of friends with pit bulls, rottweilers, and dobermans without ever even being growled at.

There was a similar case here a few years back with a woman having a couple dogs that got loose and went on a rampage with some biting and menacing. She hadn't had them vaccinated or anything. She had nothing to seize legally really. The main bite victim claimed he had thousands in medical bills but he got no relief. The incident, spanning multiple blocks and different people, caused a bit of stir locally though not rising to the level of a genuine kerfuffle.

These stories aren't all that uncommon.

I've been around a number of Cocker Spaniels. They can be very nice dogs. However, they also tend to be high strung and can lash out at anything or anybody unusual.

All houses have insurance unless you own them outright. Most of these people rent. That means you can sue the person that own the house who will have deeper pockets.

Most agents I deal with will not rent to people who own "vicious dogs". Those that do are moving away from these people. I know of one owner kicked a single lady out of her house for having a pit and a rot when she was not to have even one dog. I applauded her for this because sometimes you do not realize there are dogs there when you go to look at these houses.

I have never been bit by cocker spaniel. Most the ones that bite me are mutts 40-50lb dogs. I give pits, rots and big aggressive dogs plenty of respect. I tell the owner to put them up in a secure area that they can not get out of while im there. Damn kids open the door and its a race to find a good spot until the owner finds out. I use to like dogs but I just find them to be my #1 issue at work these days.

I remember one little dog that tore a hole in my pants while talking to the owner. I wanted to step on it but I thought I would wait and see what the owner did. Nothing.

I have 2 dogs ,a cocker and a Carolina Dog . Both are loveable ,the cocker especially .The Carolina dog is intimidated by people and barks which makes her sound vicious . But if either of my dogs attacked ,I'd bet on the cocker 1st . When strangers are in my home my dogs are caged and /or restrained . I do a lot of hiking . My dogs are always leashed . The Carolina dog is a rescue .But I got her as a pup so she has had proper training . The cocker was a purchase . Still I had him neutered . I go to the local shelter all the time. The vast majority of the dogs there are pit bulls. The breed is over populated because they are so popular despite their bad rep. Any responsible pit bull owner should also neuter their pet.

I believe you are wrong and the data points this out. Pits are bad breeds. They are extremely vicious. They were breed to be that way. You can make a dog a nice dog but you can not undo its breeding or its DNA. It will in time freak out.

Pits and rots are really bad breeds for pets. They were not breed to be pets and thats why they attack their owners a unreal rates.

Are you 100 percent certain that applies to Section 8 housing?

All housing must carry insurance because people can get hurt or property can get damaged.

Private owners that take in section 8 carry insurance unless they own property out right. Then they would be a fool to not carry it to protect their investment.

What's a Carolina Dog?

they are sometimes called American Dingos . They are probably the only dog breed in America that are naturally wild ,not feral . They were discovered in the wild in Carolinas and Georgia ,and there are still packs of them there. They are believed to be once domesticated by native Americans . They went stray and became a wild breed again. One theory is that they travelled here from Asia with the natives .

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/03/0311_030311_firstdog_2.html#

Since their discovery ,they became recognized by AKC . I'm pretty sure that mine is not a purebred however . We got her from a rescue organization .

We have both our dogs doing Agility trials . She is an excellent runner and is really getting good at it .

Pits and rots are really bad breeds for pets.

About two decades ago I did NOT have a bad experience
with a neighbor's dog - but I easily could have.

A neighbor asked me to feed his dog while on vacation.
"Sure" I said - not knowing the dog (mistake).

He gave me the key - and all was well.

First feeding time came. I noticed: "Boy this is a really BIG
dog." But I scratched it's head anyway - mistake 2 -
and it's growling at me. "Hi puppy!" A low visceral growl.

So - I spread dog food in and around the dog bowl. And left.
I'm not messing with this creature.
Turns out - this was a cross-German-Sheppard-wolf mix.

So - don't mess mith strange unknown dogs. Just my opinion.

In late 2014, Animals 24-7, a group that tracks shelter killings, estimated that of the 1.3 million shelter dogs projected for euthanasia in 2014, pit bulls accounted for 56%.20 This is true despite the fact that pit bulls only make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.21

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Forbes (2012) reported on a list of eleven breeds that were riskier for home owners and renters, and may be associated with higher home owner’s insurance costs. In some cases, insurance companies will not insure when certain breeds are part of the family (especially true for the first four breeds on the list):
1. Pit Bulls & Staffordshire Terriers
2. Doberman Pinschers
3. Rottweilers
4. German Shepherds
5. Chows
6. Great Danes
7. Presa Canarios
8. Akitas
9. Alaskan Malamutes
10. Siberian Huskies
11. Wolf-hybrids

I was looking at an article and something caught my eye.

Pits are only 6% of the population but account for more deaths and maulings then all other breeds combined!

Also notice people get these dogs thinking how cool am I then realize they are fucking demon dogs and turn them in to dog shelters! They account for 56% of all dogs in shelters but only 6% of the population of dogs.

These are just damning statics!
