Police in South Carolina say video exists of a female student striking a police officer during their confrontation earlier this week, a new report says.

The video shows the unidentified girl, who is African-American, hitting Deputy Ben Fields amid their struggle Monday at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C., according to The New York Daily News.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said late Tuesday that his office has the unreleased clip, the third depicting the confrontation the day before.

“[It shows the student] hitting the school resource officer with her fists and striking him,” Leon said.

“Even though [the student] was wrong for disturbing the class, I’m looking at what our deputy did,” he said of Fields.

“[I am] shocked and disturbed,” he added of footage documenting the incident.

Two videos emerged Monday showing Fields aggressively confronting a female student when she refuses to leave a classroom.

Fields, who is white, then overturns the girl’s desk as she ignores his orders.

He is then shown dragging the student across the room before commanding her to put her hands behind her back. Fields is currently on leave following the standoff.

The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that it is opening a civil rights investigation of the incident alongside the FBI’s local field office.

“The Columbia FBI Field Office, the Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina have opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrests,” the DOJ said in a statement.

“The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence in order to determine whether a federal law was violated.”

Several 2016 Democratic presidential candidates have since condemned the conflict for hurting the relationship between students and law enforcement.

“There is no excuse for violence inside a school,” tweeted Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.

“The #AssaultatSpringValleyHigh is unacceptable – schools should be safe places,” she added, using a trending Twitter hashtag for news about the incident.

Former Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-Md.), meanwhile, said that the event concerns him as both a father and as an education reformer.

“I would be ripped ballistic if someone did that to my daughter,” he said of the video.

“That’s pretty outrageous behavior. I mean, that’s not appropriate behavior for any adult to treat a kid.”

Back in the old days a politician would have said, “I would be ripped ballistic if my daughter behaved that way”.

Where's the school supporting their Resource Officer? They threw him under the bus real quick.

Ok. Message sent and received.

The teacher in this instance was certainly big enough to handle the situation on his own instead of abdicating his responsibility to the "resource" officer.

That's not an appropriate way for a kid punk, male or female, to treat and adult charged with responsibility of conducting a class. Today kids think they should be in charge and use classrooms and ability to irritate for their own entertainment. Those from earlier periods who were allowed to get away with it are now middle aged psychopathic kids running for high political office or supporting them for high political office.

Agreed, but note that the student was an 18-year old, generally considered an adult.

I heard the sheriff say that he fired the deputy for not following proper procedure. He did not characterize the tossing as excessive force, but noted that policy indicated that he was supposed to maintain control of the subject, and when he tossed her, he relinquished control.

Last night, I heard him asked how he would have done it, and he had no explanation.

The sheriff fired the deputy because his actions went against their policy and procedure. Oddly enough, (and this was also reported from CNN) that the deputies in that area were never trained on how to deal with students. So my question is who called the cops in the first place and why did they need the assistance of the sheriff when the school administration could have just called the parents to come pick up their disruptive child who refused to leave the classroom? This was actually a student disciplinary matter that did not involve violence until that deputy came in the scene and started throwing her around while she was still at her desk. That's where things started to get violent. Yes, the girl resisted arrest as well as being disruptive. But when I heard that deputies were not trained to handle situations like this, a red flag went up. That school is going to be hearing from some lawyers soon. They had no business calling in the deputies at all. This was a civil matter which then upon the school administration escalated when they called in the sheriff. The school should have known that the deputies were not trained to handle situations like this. So, the administrator, the teacher and whoever else assisted in calling the sheriff will be held liable. They should have kept this to a minimum and called the parents. Let the parents handle their disruptive kid. Now what will happen, is the school will be sued and the sheriff's division will probably be getting more wind of this too. It is unfortunate that the deputy lost his job but he nor any of those assisting him with the badge were ever trained to handle situations like this. CNN reported this and even the sheriff spokesperson admitted this as well.

See here www.chicagotribune.com/ne...video-20151028-story.html

From I have read that same deputy assaulted another female student several years back. And finally, when that sheriff spokesperson mentioned that the deputy had violated policy and procedure, that is where the lawsuit begins under State and Federal color of law statutes (1984, 1985, and 1986).

Oddly enough, (and this was also reported from CNN) that the deputies in that area were never trained on how to deal with students.

I would invite anyone to describe what should have been done by the cop.

So my question is who called the cops in the first place and why did they need the assistance of the sheriff when the school administration could have just called the parents to come pick up their disruptive child who refused to leave the classroom?

I have not seen it clearly stated, but it appears to have been the Assistant Principal.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/deputy-ben-fields-sued-twice_562f8ba3e4b00aa54a4b26c0

A teacher and assistant principal had asked the student to leave the classroom before summoning Fields, according to Richland County Sheriff's Department Deputy Katelyn Jasak.

This was actually a student disciplinary matter that did not involve violence until that deputy came in the scene and started throwing her around while she was still at her desk. That's where things started to get violent.

This was a disciplinary matter that did not involve violence until the adult sophmore student resisted the officer. When the school called the cops, it became a law enforcement matter.

Yes, the girl resisted arrest as well as being disruptive. But when I heard that deputies were not trained to handle situations like this, a red flag went up.

Cops are trained on how to effect an arrest. The adult involved in this instance was not entitled to any special treatment that I am aware of.

That school is going to be hearing from some lawyers soon. They had no business calling in the deputies at all.

Au contraire. The school would be sued if school staff used force to remove the student.

This was a civil matter which then upon the school administration escalated when they called in the sheriff.

It was a school matter until she refused to comply with the instructions of the teacher and the school administrator. Then the cops were called to remove the disruptive student from the classroom. It was her refusal to comply which caused it to escalate to a law enforcement matter.

The school should have known that the deputies were not trained to handle situations like this.

Police are trained in how to effect an arrest. The cops job was to remove her from the room with the least force necessary, but with the all the force necessary.

So, the administrator, the teacher and whoever else assisted in calling the sheriff will be held liable.

Not a chance. If anyone is sued, it will be the county and/or the cop.

They should have kept this to a minimum and called the parents. Let the parents handle their disruptive kid.

This assumes the classroom will be allowed to remain unusable until the parents report to the school. You assume they can locate the parent and the parent will hurry on down to the school. This is simply not an effective solution.

As the student could not be controlled by the teacher, and she so reported to the administrator, I could see a possible action against the school administration if it failed to do something about the situation.

One alternative is to remove all the other students from the room, perhaps sending them and the teacher to another location, leaving the administrator and the cop to babysit the student until she has an attitude adjustment. This permits a defiant student to shutdown an entire class for as long as he or she wants.

Now what will happen, is the school will be sued and the sheriff's division will probably be getting more wind of this too.

I see no possible suit against the school. The county and/or the cop may be sued.

The next time the school calls and Sheriff Lott's division sends an officer, I would like to know what he expects that officer to do. The school calls the police to remove the student, not to assume the job of a school counselor.

If the cop has the other students and the teacher go to another location, and he remains to babysit the defiant student, and the classroom unusable for an extended period, there could be a school action against the police for failure to perform the duty of removing the student.

It is unfortunate that the deputy lost his job but he nor any of those assisting him with the badge were ever trained to handle situations like this. CNN reported this and even the sheriff spokesperson admitted this as well.

They are trained how to effect an arrest. She refused to comply with oral instruction from the teacher, the administrator, and then the cop. She made herself subject to being lawfully removed by force.

And from I have read that same deputy assaulted another female student several years back.

I read that he was accused of a prior assault, but one case was decided in his favor, and another is pending.

The major problem here is the student, and it is not an isolated incident. There is a breakdown of discipline in the public schools. The parents do not discipline their darlings, and sued schools into submission. Schools now call the cops who are villifed and/or sued for mistreating their little darlings. We may see a little Baltimore of law enforcement break out at the school.

You assume they can locate the parent and the parent will hurry on down to the school. This is simply not an effective solution.

The school administration has on file all the information they need to contact family members in matters like this. Not only is it an effective solution but that is how it has always been done until the schools started using the police to do the schools job. Never in all the years going to elementary and high school did we ever use police as the mediators. Never.

But you are correct about the student. What the teacher should have done is at the beginning of class had all students turn in their phones so that the idea of texting would not have taken place. Then, when class session was about over the teacher would have the students pick up their phones.

Lastly, the sheriff spokesman had stated that their deputies were not trained to handle situations like this. That I saw on CNN yesterday.
