A South Carolina officer attacks, slams African-American female student to the ground. Racial tension between police and the African-American community has only increased over the last year. After a video circulated on social media Monday night showing an officer attacking a student, that tension only got worse. An unnamed African-American female was allegedly disturbing class and was asked to leave, when she refused, a school resource officer was called in to help the situation. As local WIS-TV in South Carolina reported on Oct. 26, the officer only made matters worse. In a class room in Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C., a typical scene of a student acting out apparently took place. When the student refused, the unnamed Caucasian officer entered the room, grabbing the students arm where he proceeded to slam the girl and her desk to the ground. The video was captured by a fellow classmate that also showed the officer putting the student's arms around her back, positioning her to be arrested. "The student was told she was under arrest for disturbing school and given instructions which she again refused," Sheriff Leon Lott told local WIS-TV. "The video then shows the student resisting and being arrested by the SRO." The officer has since been placed on leave. The video began circulating throughout social media, mostly on Facebook and Twitter, where outrage and debate over proper police procedure took place. Once someone does something that warrants an arrest, if they do not cooperate willingly, then force is justified. Assuming arrest was warranted, I don't see any problem with the police conduct here. The article title does not reflect what's in the video either.
I have a problem with the cop being called in the first place. When did teachers start to delegate their authority out to police? Did you see how big the teacher is? Bigger than the cop - and black. The guy could have pushed the desk out in the hallway with the disruptive student in it - problem solved. Well there's the problem right there. Apparently the cop is also a football and strength conditioning coach. You are saying that if he had done this as a coach instead of as a cop, it would have been wrong, but when he does it as a cop that makes it OK? In a Cop Culture, the Bill of Rights Doesn’t Amount to Much I'm going with the fairly safe assumption that police intervention was desired by the teacher/school, and that the officer was there with the consent of the teacher. If that was the case, and the police was called inappropriately, then fault does not lie with the police office but rather with the teacher, and in that event blame should not be given to the police officer as the article plainly directs it. But assuming the student was disruptive to the point of disturbing the function of the classroom, all participants there being present by contract, and the student was refusing to leave and continuing to disrupt, she's disturbing the peace and arrest was warranted, and the degree of physical forced used reasonable to that end. That's my take on this one.
I believe the principal was called and was there also.
I remember several years back of a very similar incident involving a female student being man-handled by cops on a campus. It involved a black female student. I don't believe this story is new at all. But as for the crux of it all, I think that teacher needs some serious explaining to do as to why they called in the cops in the first place. The cops just went along with what the teacher told them to do and, of course, the cops obliged because they are not there to protect the students at all but the teachers. I think there is more to this story than what the video relays. Start with the teacher and ask them why they called the cops in the first place.
I listened to the video. It gave me a new perception. The high school girl resisted leaving and put up a fight after the cop tried to get her to leave. I thought she was younger but now it's a HS girl. Again, the HS girl put up a physical fight and the cop got physical. Try to find a copy of the video with sound.

This is just incredibly disgusting to read about this same officer in a very similar assault incident involving a pregnant young woman years ago. This guy needs to have his badge removed and gun taken away. He is unfit to serve as a police officer! And it is interesting that the media never honed in on the teacher who called the cops. I have to wonder why this thug was a cop in a school, given his past. On October 24, 2005, Carlos Martin was returning home from work at the Moncrief Army Community Hospital at Fort Jackson when he saw Deputy Fields driving his patrol car in the parking lot. Responding to a noise complaint, Fields confronted Martin for playing the music in his car too loud and asked if he was the reason for the complaint. The schools have been sued into submission. If they touch one of the little darlings, the teacher and/or the school gets sued. The parents have abdicated their responsibility to discipline their kids, and the teachers cannot do anything with a student who defies authority. So they call the cops. Now the cop gets fired. We may be at, or get to, the point where the cop will not physically remove the student, and the teacher will get no teaching done until the student decides to leave.

This cop did not strike her, did not tase her, did not choke her, did not use a pepper spray, and did not use a water cannon indoors is a crowded classroom, but I am sure the police department will take the latter suggestion under advisement. This sort of crap is happening in grade school, and the teacher cannot do anything physical about it. Some of the grade school kids would just be too big for my niece (a teacher) to handle. Her principal was another lady, her size. In one recalled incident, a grade schooler looked at the cop and said, "I'm not afraid of you. You've got a gun. You're not gonna shoot me. You've got a taser. You're not gonna tase me. You can't do nuthin'." That's where we are at. When the child is taught that there are no consequences, this is what you get.
