Beware of Tesla Autopilot Watch out for that passing Tesla Tesla is rolling out an Autopilot update to approximately 60,000 cars around the world. While this doesn’t yet allow drivers to sit back and have a nap, it’s the first step on the road to fully automated driving. The problem is, for the time being at least, other drivers and pedestrians need to be a little wary of the Tesla driving past them. The Autopilot feature allows the company’s cars to “automatically steer down the highway, change lanes, and adjust speed in response to traffic”. However, Tesla is very clear that drivers should keep their hands on the wheel at all times, because they’re still ultimately responsible for any accidents. According to BBC News, Elon Musk stated, “It should not hit pedestrians, hopefully. It should handle them well. The driver cannot abdicate responsibility. That will come at some point in the future.” Which is both worrying and reassuring. Musk clearly cannot come out and say Autopilot will prevent accidents from occurring, but he wouldn’t be rolling it out if he thought it was putting people in extra danger. Would he?. People are going to use this technology in ways that push its limits, that's what users of any new technology do. To use the Jobsian bullshit response of "don't hold it that way" doesn't fly anymore when we're talking about a multi ton vehicle barreling down the road at 65mph. dashingtomars writes: The technology IS going to cause a severe accident in short order at this rate. As if life wasn't easy enough? A couple hundred years ago you had to ride a wagon or horse, or walk, if you wanted to get somewhere. Now you can have a motorized car get you there but it does require a little muscular effort to push the gas pedal down and work the *power assisted* steering wheel. And now even that is too much work for the conveniencaholic. This is insane! Yes it's very dangerous. As a software developer, I can pretty much promise this will kill a number of people, and regretfully, it will include those who don't own Tesla's and have never asked to be a part of this experiment.
Self driving cars, one of the stupidest ideas ever.
Published on Oct 15, 2015 I am the proud owner of a 2015 Tesla SP90D, purchased with all available options. It is the best car I have ever owned and I love it dearly. I also own a large chunk of Tesla stock. Today my car received the anticipated version 7 software update and I was anxious to try it out near my home. After several seconds of successful hands-free driving, I admit I started to ignore the warning to keep my hands on the wheel so that I could record the moment to share with friends. That's when all hell broke loose. My car was tracking the car in front of me to successfully steer, but I was going slower and that car eventually drifted far ahead of me. Shortly after that, another car was coming in my car's direction from the opposite side of the road. I can only guess at what happened next. My car apparently thought the oncoming car was supposed to be followed, and suddenly veered to the left, crossing the double-yellow road divider line right into its path. Had I not reacted quickly to jerk the steering wheel in the opposite direction, a devastating head-on collision would have occurred. I post this in the hopes that it will prevent any losses to anyone using AutoPilot in similar circumstances and in the sincere hope that Tesla can address the issue as soon as possible if the software can somehow be improved in detecting both oncoming vehicles and cross-traffic lane dividers to avoid steering into oncoming traffic. Future Darwin award winner. Autopilot for a car? I hope the manslaughter charges come fast and furious.
