Nice pic but I'm not sure this old fortress has a lot of significance.
It has walls. That helps. Especially for rotary operations. Maybe a helipad within the walls. Not bad for general supply depot. The will have issues with sanitation. That is not true on Russians not caring about field sanitation. The castle likely has running water and flush toilet facilities for tourist accommodations. It can protect against snipers and other activities and commands the countryside. My guess it is fear of "blue on blue" attacks like we seem to suffer in Afghanistan makes the Russians want to have a wall between them and the Syrians - even the loyal ones.
I think I'd want a wall too. : )

Well if the attack happens from the same side it was called "blue on blue" usually in reference to accidental friendly fire incidents but in Afghanistan it is the local troops we have trained deliberately targeting their own side aka they are turn coats.
Yes that is green on blue. It would be blue on blue if for example one NATO nation accidentally attacked another. Green is host nation coalition partners not involved in official or binding treaties. Yellow is neutral. Trust me on this, ok:) I teach the joint and multinational doctrine on stuff like this. To include LOAC and ROE. Now if some super alliance was created with Russia, Iran, Syria and others, then it could be blue on blue. Something like the Gog alliance or something similar:)
