The move is a blow to Britain and America’s mission to wipe out Islamic State but maintain an opposition to brutal dictator Assad

Russia has sent its crack special troops into Syria to back up President Bashar al-Assad’s bid to wipe out his opposition.

Vladimir Putin’s feared Spetsnaz unit and a covert para battalion ghosted into the war-torn country and are preparing for an all-out assault on rebels fighting the regime – including moderate units such as the western-backed Free Syrian Army.

A military source said last night: “Putin’s marines are there to guard the airbases they are using against sabotage by rebels. But Spetsnaz and air- assault troops are not there to provide security to static objects, they are extremely aggressive and highly trained.

“They are there to mop up after air strikes, call in air strikes, go on extremely covert missions against rebels and ultimately wipe them out.

“And they will not be as accountable as British or US special forces. They are there for one reason, to wipe out anyone threatening Assad. By any means. And by doing that they will be consolidating Russia’s position on the Med and in the Middle East.”

Putin claims the mission is to defeat IS – but his warplanes have been helping Assad by smashing rebel positions. Most of the targets in Northern Syria have been al-Qaeda affiliates or less extreme rebel groups opposed to the leader, some of which are CIA-trained and MI6-backed.

Spetsnaz – Special Purpose Soldiers – have been joined by the 7th Air Assault Mountain Division.

They are among Russia’s toughest and most shadowy troops, many of whom have fought dirty wars in Chechnya where they built up a deep hatred of jihadists.

They went on bloody revenge missions against local jihad units to punish them for atrocities against Russian troops and civilians.

America has vowed to step up its attacks on IS in reaction to Putin’s air strikes on Assad’s opponents. And Nato yesterday urged Russia to end its rebel attacks and focus on beating IS.

Saudi clerics called on Muslim countries to back holy war against Syria and its Iranian and Russian backers. The Sunni-ruled land is suspected of supporting al-Qaeda and IS against Shia supporters of Assad. Saudi has joined air strikes on IS in Syria.

Excellent. I hope they do a fine job of violating human rights. I recall when the Muslim Brotherhood kidnapped some Soviet diplomats back in the 80's, around when they were kidnapping Americans, and being rewarded for it. Spetsnaz did not worry about human rights. After one of the diplomats was killed, they kidnapped some family members pf the kidnappers, and sent back the body of one of them with his scrotum cut off and sewed into his mouth. Muslim Brotherhood released the other diplomats.

We on the other hand had a hostage crisis that lasted for several years and led to the Iran-Contra Affair. If you want to play in that part of the world, you've got to play hardball.

We The People have no stomach for it and, like the family of the kidnappers, no balls for it either.

I don't even care to be over there myself. But if we're going to do it, you've got to speak to the locals in a language they understand. It is good to Russia go in, they have no such constraints. In the long run, the only successful military tactic over there is genocide. Not going to happen from us, but Sunnni and Shia will be happy to slaughter each other for Allah.

Not going to happen either. We should have been flaying a few foklks over in the sand on the QT for years. Who knows, perhaps we have been. I still am amazed that we haven't had many, many more mass terror attacks in the U.S. in the past several years. I would not be surprised if we did in fact had someone's balls in our hands but ????????

What do you think was happening before we stepped in and invaded Iraq to save the asshole Royal family in Saudi Arabia?

Saddam Hussein was never any real threat to either the US or to Israel, and frankly I don't give a damn about Israel. She is a sovereign nation, and can take care of herself.

Saddam and Iraq WERE a direct threat to the Saud Royal family, though.

Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012)

Good deal. Now will we send some of our pussys over there to help ISIS and the jihadists?

This would be a good time for McCain to do another photo-op in Syria. He'll have a mike and a chance to pretend he's Winston Churchill. He's an attention whore anyway, and what a chance for him to pontificate.

Kinda lame reporting. How many Spetsnaz? 5? 50? 500? 5,000? 50,000? We have no idea.

“They are there to mop up after air strikes, call in air strikes, go on extremely covert missions against rebels and ultimately wipe them out.

But in the dozens of missions the Russian planes have carried out, the article can't cite even one instance of Spetsnaz being used in a subsequent mop-up operation.

The headline was promising and I almost posted it until I realized there was almost no actual reporting, other than an allegation that Spetsnaz are present in Syria, supposedly in sizable numbers to conduct raids.

I don't doubt some Spetsnaz are present but it is far more likely they are being used as technical specialists to coordinate Russian planes with Syrian army and to serve as field officers to supplement the Syrian officer corps. I assume there are some colonels and generals present as well. And that Russia is providing Assad with a lot of military and satellite intel they couldn't get otherwise.

They also may be needed in case a plane goes down, considering the fate of the Jordanian pilot. And no idea what type of SAM's they may have, once Obama and the coven threw open the gates to Qaddafi's arsenal.

They don't need to. Just to locate terrorists and bomb them.

I don't get it.... why should we care if Pooty-poot wants to put Ruski boots on the ground in Syria? No matter which "side" you're on, the whole region is a convoluted quagmire. Let ISIS lop-off some Russian heads for a while. We don't have a snowball's chance of any successful nation building in that region anyway.

It is a forced move for the Russians. They must weaken ISIS because it would move north into Caucasus, southern Russia and Central Asia.

What I cannot understand is why the West did not predict this obvious chess move?

My suspicion is that there is a negative selection to the leadership. Smarter people get excluded or are nor willing to get involved. Neocons and globalist neoliberals are blinded by ideology and are bat shit crazy.

Just look up Samantha Power and others on YouTube. Weird bunch.

Even Natan Yahoo kowtows to Moscow now. He is not that silly.

It is a clash of civilizations. Terror is the weapon they use against us. Their chief threat is one of demographics, aggravated by all the multicultural Mama Merkel's in the West who lack the will to defend our civilization.

We need not be over there, our presence is counter productive. We wage stupid wars against concepts like terror, rather than identify the actual flesh and blood enemy. Guys like Assad and Saddam have the right idea. Playing Mama Merkel and bringing them flush toilets and human rights is a fools errand.
