Mets v Rangers

Neither team was expected to go this far .

Mets should be paying a little more attention to their placing by locking up home field . I know the players probably don't care ,and home field advantage is slightly over rated in baseball(maybe the organization thinks they'd rather have the crucial game 3 at home ) ; but their fans do care .

However it is either going to be Gallardo or Holland.

Now is the time of year where match ups are very important and I would play them to the hilt. Since Gallardo had such good success against the Jays I would start him in Game 1 and Holland in game 2...

Now if they win at least one of the games in Toronto (preferably both) I think I just might take the chance on running Gonzalez out there in game 3. Especially if they won the 1st game and lost the 2nd, if it is the other way around then it's a tossup as to who I would start. Normally I would say Hamels but the Jays have had good success against him so I might be tempted to go elsewhere...

And yes I think I would use 13 pitchers... Vegetarians eat vegetables. Beware of humanitarians!

Thanks! What a wild west ride to the finish for the AL West. Rangers had to win one of four (of the last 4 games of the season) against the Angels to get a playoff berth; 2 of 4 to ensure clinching the AL West. It all came down to game 162.

This is American league playoffs were you don't need that many bench substitutions or pinch base runners. The minimum pitchers I would go with this series is 12...

This is from Rangers website... Looks like Gallardo starts game 1 and Hamels game 2...

http://m.rangers.mlb.com/news/article/153380030/rangers-may-tab-yovani-gallardo- in-game-1

It also talks about 11 and 10 pitchers but you gotta remember Kela isn't 100% and probably can't pitch on back to backs or more that 1 inning...

An excerpt: "Daniels admitted that the Blue Jays' number of right-handed power hitters is something to think about". (Yeah no schitt John that's why you need to carry at least 12 pitchers so you don't run out of options)... Because if you have to replace someone on the 25 man roster that person isn't eligible for the next series if you advance... DUHHH!!!

Also noticed Bass wasn't mentioned?? He's RHed and has had success against the Jays...

This is from the Jays website...

http://m.bluejays.mlb.com/news/article/153283216/blue-jays-set-to-host-rangers- in-alds

Here are a couple of excerpts: "Price: The AL Cy Young Award candidate has a 3-4 record with a 5.15 ERA in 11 career starts vs. the Rangers".

"In addition to Gallardo and Hamels, the Rangers also are expected to have Derek Holland and Colby Lewis in their rotation. Lewis is 3-6 with a 6.97 ERA in 11 career games against the Blue Jays, while Holland is 3-2 with a 5.15 ERA in eight games. The fact that Hamels and Holland are lefties could be beneficial for the Blue Jays, who led the Majors with an .818 OPS against southpaws".

And the one subject I haven't heard raised yet is what do you do with Joey considering most of the Jays staff is RHed???

Yanks line up for tonight . B. Gardner, CF C. Young, LF C. Beltran, RF A. Rodriguez, DH B. McCann, C C. Headley, 3B G. Bird, 1B R. Refsnyder, 2B D. Gregorius, SS M. Tanaka, SP

The puzzlement is the lead off. Ellsbury is sitting . I don't mind Young playing against a lefty . But Ellsbury has had a couple hits against Keuchel in his career . Gardner none.

To me the key is for Tanaka and McCann to keep Jose Altuve and George Springer from having an impact in the game . Gardy and Young have to get on base and give Beltran ,AROID and McCann people to drive in . Tanaka has to keep it close for half a game and then hand it off to Wilson ,Betances, and, Miller . The Yanks have a slugger's chance.

Looking forward to the Pirates -Cubs game tomorrow .

We in the NY area get screwed again with the TV schedule . NLDS Mets v Dodgers 1st game starts 9:45 PM ET. Guess I'm missing that one.

That is the key. Keep Altuve off the bases. However tough to do:)

He is excellent at expanding the strike zone and ruining good strike out pitches. I've seen him run up 10 pitch at bats.

Only way to get him is to challenge him. Martin Perez did this his last start. He threw him two way inside balls then followed with an outside pitch fouled off. Then he threw another inside ball which was fouled off. Then he blew a fast ball nose high for a swinging strike 3.

The Astro that goes unnoticed but causes the most damage is Gattis.

Rasmus a free swinging LH batter will be aiming for your cozy RF wall:)

Ellsbury is 1-3 against Keuchel and Young is 6-20 and has a .972 OPS against LHers this year, so I would have to say Young is the better match up to start the game. Now later in the game if/when the Astros bring in a RHed reliever Ellsbury would probably be the preferred pinch hitter...

They spit the bit . Just like they did for the last month. The biggest issue going forward is that they still have large contracts for AROID , Tex ,Ellsberry ,CC and a few other players who no one will want in a trade. They may have to suck it up another year. I still think it was smart of the organization to hold on to their prospects .

I didn't watch the game so I would be guessing as to who it was. Did she look like she was of Hispanic descent, this girl perhaps?

If so that is Jessica Mendoza and yes she did play the game both college and professional fastpitch softball... (Just because the ball is slightly larger doesn't mean you don't know how to play the game)!!

If it wasn't her then I have no clue cause I don't watch ESPN that much to have seen all of their announcers...

CC is only 35 so if he gets his act together in rehab and loses some weight he might be good to go next year. He did finish out the year much better than he started it. You guys seem to have some starting pitching depth so they might consider a 6 man rotation to keep some arms fresher for later in the season. But that won't help much until they address the pen, need about 3 more "Reliable" arms there...

Don't know what they do with A-Roid. Let him play next year, buy him out or ask him to retire. He did fairly well until August (got tired I assume) maybe a platoon with Tex at DH might be something to consider to let Bird play more at 1st... One thing A-Roid did pretty well this year was keep his mouth shut (less drama) so maybe he is learning something as he gets older...

Sorry to see the Yanks lose. Was rooting for them. My father-in-law was a big Yankees fan. We all rooted for "Papa's" team.

Yeah long-term contracts for aging pros is an albatross around the neck.

Maybe the Yankees can hire the former Angels GM to find ways:)

If so that is Jessica Mendoza and yes she did play the game both college and professional fastpitch softball... (Just because the ball is slightly larger doesn't mean you don't know how to play the game)!!

Yes but an underhand throw!

ESPN filled her with a bunch of stats and "no kidding comments." I don't know how many times she said "Keutchel will come in low with his slider on RH batters." No kidding he was doing it all night.

Another bright one was "It seems the Yankees are having problems hitting his slider." Thank you very much Jessica, I think we know that.

The experienced male announcers were no better. They were reading off a script as well since they really don't know these teams and don't see them that often. Maybe the Yankees as they are on national TV quite often.

But it was annoying to listen to. You had the two male announcers calling the game and then at times interrupting them Jessica comes on and speaks with authority on 4 seam fastballs. Please.

I'm surprised we haven't heard anything out of SOSO yet, I thought the Jays was his team?

Nope. Just wanted to see Tulo to get a shot at a World Series ring. I am kind of indifferent on baseball teams excpet for one or two that I absolutely dislike and wish bad things (the ex. Brooklyn Dodgre being #1 on that list). I guess if I had favorite teams in the hunt this year it would include St. Loiuis (soley for Matt Holiday's). See a theme here?

Yes but an underhand throw!

In girls fast pitch the mound is 43 feet from home plate and pitches top out at around 70 MPH, which is the equivalent of a 98 MPH "heeter" in baseball...

On top of that they throw knuckleballs and screwballs which you rarely see in baseball anymore, in fact the only pitcher I know that throws a "screwgy" is Yu Darvish!!!

How many people do you know that can sit in front of the TV and call what pitches were thrown?? Not many...

Most fans are casual fans and only know if the pitch was "really, really, really fast" or was slower and dropped in the dirt which to them means "that pitcher isn't very good he keeps throwing the ball into the ground"... LOL... :)

When it first started out I figured they were gonna blow off the Rangers totally, although they did try pretty hard. They weren't totally stupid cause they did bring up Gallardo (a RHer) and his record against the Jays. But they blew off the LHers which I think is a mistake, and ignored the other RHers for the Rangers. Which means they don't think anybody can shut down the Jays when the opposite is true...

Now when it came to the Astros/Royals they seemed to understand if you keep the ball in the park against Houston you can beat them fairly easily...

So many of them predicted the Yankees to win the WC.

Old habits die hard they are used to the Yankees winning and didn't see the reality of the situation they were a tired, injured team who backed into the playoffs with a bad record down the stretch. They also thought the young team Astros should have known who their elders/betters were and folded like a cheap house of cards.

Most of the so called experts on baseball only take into consideration certain stats, not all of them, and that's why most of them are wrong most of the time. But as you well know "Every dog has his day"...

Yeah long-term contracts for aging pros is an albatross around the neck.

The Yankees are a big market team and can afford to release or tell a few players to retire and suck up the money loss. Most other teams don't have that luxury and have to choose players and contracts very wisely...

Yeah and we have a couple of those contracts that could really be a hindrance before it's over with, but so far so good... Prince, Hamels and Choo contracts all expire in 20 and 21, Choo will be 38 or 39 by then...

Hal Steinbrenner is not his old man . He has put the team on a budget . They will be a better team in the long run for that . All the Yank fans knew that this year and next will be a retooling year similar to what they did in the eary 1990s under Gene Michaels . For the Yanks to even make the WC game was an unexpected bonus.

RHP Marcus Stroman, who returned from a torn left knee ligament to go 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four September starts, starts for the Blue Jays on Friday. Texas starts LHP Cole Hamels, who is 7-1 with a 3.66 ERA in 12 starts with the Rangers. Texas has won each of the past 10 games started by Hamels.

On tap for todays game...

No info yet on yesterdays injuries status for today. I expect Beltre to miss today at a minimum and maybe Thursday, I know when I have a back issue it takes about 3 days for it to clear up and about 5-6 days before I can run. With the resources he has possibly shorter recovery time, he took a cortisone injection last night, MRI came back negative. On top of that they flew in Joey and Lucas from Arizona fall league just in case, if one of them are used then Beltre would also have to miss the ALCS if they advance...

As far as Bautista and Donaldson goes I would expect them both to be back. But with "possible" concussion they might hold Donaldson out as a precautionary measure. Hopefully the Jays don't know my "secret remedy" for hamstring ailments and Bautista misses another game... :) Seriously though I expect him to be massaged and wrapped up tight and play todays game...

Yeah I seen that it was good to see him again in action, have missed his insight and humor.

Yes I should have linked more. Dyson did well again.

D, D, O and D came up big in the 6-4 win. Of course Napolitano clutch. Alberto with the big RBI single.

BP 7 scoreless innings. 9 Ks

The source I was getting the game from on my phone wasn't showing certain happenings like the error Alberto made that lead to 2 of those runs. If I had known that little tidbit I would have kept my mouth shut, well maybe... :)

And it all worked out in the end with Alberto redeeming himself by driving in the winning run with a borrowed bat. "Yunguns" doing the job the old guys can't seem to do, Fielder, Choo, Andrus, Moreland and Hamilton haveall of 3 hits between them in 2 games. Don't know if it's just them being uptight or Beltre being out has got the lineup screwed up, allowing the others to be pitched around in certain situations...

No way that would have happened earlier in the year, 7 innings would have yielded at least 10 runs...

Long game both BPs got a workout Rangers used 6 pitchers and Jays used 8. Key to Game 3 might be which starter lasts the longest before the call goes out to the pen...

I would really love to know what was said between Kela and Donaldson in the 13th??? Good to see he has an attitude like Rougies... :)

Game 3 starter is still to be Perez as far as I know so here is his stats against the Jays, not really much to go on...

Two of Hamilton's HRs this year happened in one game against a knuckle ball throwing right hander. Forgot who? Think on the Twins.

Speaking of HRs I think you will remember this one. And this is another major reason I wanted to keep him he shines in the playoffs...

Oct. 10, 2011: Nelson Cruz's walk-off grand slam AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill

Nelson Cruz's 11th-inning bomb into the left-field seats to win Game 2 of the 2011 American League Championship Series -- his second home run of the game and third of the series -- was the first walk-off grand slam in postseason history (Robin Ventura's game-winning blast in the 1999 NLCS was officially scored a single) and it ended a game so nerve-racking that Texas Rangers reliever Scott Feldman said, "When I got done watching that game I thought my beard was going to turn gray."

The only question when Cruz hit the 1-2 pitch from Detroit reliever Ryan Perry was whether it would stay fair. When it did, the only question was whether he would be able to find home plate through the crush of teammates crowding there to greet him. "It was crazy; they were throwing water on me at first, and I didn't know where I was going," he said. "They hit me a few times and then I found the plate." -Jim Caple

Something I've noticed the last couple of days is Josh seems to be getting his stroke together, if you remember correctly he was very streaky at times! And Price is going to be their only LHed starter in this series cause I don't think Buehrle is gonna be on the roster. So are you thinking what I'm thinking as to who could do a lot of damage against the Jays??

Looks like I need to add this statement to the list of dumb things I've uttered, 0-10 with 4 Ks... About the only thing I got right is "he's streaky"...

He's a fly ball pitcher.

Should have put Gallardo out there again.

Well I guess we will see if Hamels can keep bailing the team out. But they have to score runs too.

If they would have run more RHers at them in Game 3 and/or Game 4 the series would probably be over... This is what happens when you don't use the good matchups you have to the fullest...

When Darvish comes back that will even out the rotation and make matchups easier to accomplish. Especially if they use one/two of the young'uns to make a 6 man rotation, keeps everybody fresher and gives the young'uns some innings/experience...

Ace gets three ground balls can't get an out. Hey believe me I had such an inning with my youth baseball team this year. Difference was kiddos came back next inning with two doubles and one was by sonny boy knocking in three:)

That's baseball.

Good season Yanks and Rangers.

Zig (CZ) was right about the match ups. Should have had a RH starter in game 3 or 4 of the series in Texas. Lewis or Gallardo.

Well my assessment? The Rangers were one ace short of taking this series. Yu back by mid season next year. Rangers have some decisions to make on Lewis and Gallardo. If not it could be another down April. They basically have three LH starters.

Let's Go Mets:)

Guessing no one told the Jays that it's not a good idea to sell beer in cans . The Yanks charge $8-10 for a soft plastic bottle of beer . Then they take the top off so it can't be used as a projectile . At that price no one is going to waste a drop anyway.

Had it been Posada or McCann behind the plate when Bautista did the bat flip and pose before rounding the bases after his home run there would've been a brawl at home plate when he crossed it .

You could say that about any one of the Games 3,4 or 5.

This is so very appropriate... "We are advancing constantly and we're not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose and we're going to kick him in the ass. We're going to kick the hell out of him all the time and we're going to go through him like crap through a goose"!!!" (If that man was a Rangers fan he would be rolling in his grave right about now)...

They should be glad I wasn't in that dugout I would have said things the management wouldn't have wanted to hear...

I was on the fence as a kid . But growing up on Long Island ,and being taken to Shea stadium by my dad and the boy scouts I was inclinded to root for the Mets . Then they made a series of trades that killed my loyalty . The 1st one was trading Amos Otis for Joe Foy. Then they trades Nolan Ryan for Jim Fergosi . The trade that decided it though was moving Tom Seaver to the big Reds machine for a package that included Doug Flynn and Pat Zachary .

I am now going to be a front-runner and jump on the Mets bandwagon. For the most part they are a likable group ;and I'm a big fan of Jacob DeGromm . Yesterday he "struggled" and gave up 2 runs . The best Yankee pitchers gives up that many runs in the 1st inning .

Mets vs Cubs

These teams on paper look pretty even all the way across the board, ERA, BA, HRs etc, etc... So you would think it should end up being a close series with a lot of tight 1-2 run games. And I don't really see one team having the experience factor over the other so to me this is a tossup. It's to bad one of these teams has to lose but that's the way it goes...

Mets vs Cubs

My mind goes back to Sept 9,1969 . Tom Seaver vs Ferguson Jenkins ...two of the greatest pitchers of all time in the middle of a tight race to decide the division. Shea was packed ;the crowd was raucous. There were loud applause and thunderous foot stomping .

In the middle of the game ;probably spooked by all the noise , a feral black cat who was living in the depths of the stadium wandered onto the field and bolted past the Cubbies dugout .

http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.297425!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/ derivatives/article_970/alg-catcubs-jpg.jpg

That cat was the dagger in the Cubbies season. All that was left was playing out the season even though the Cubbies still held the lead.

Yank fans are calling sports radio and saying that if the Mets don't want to sign Murphy next year that there is an opening on the Yanks. Not sure about that . Murphy looks like he is one of those post-season phenoms that comes out of nowhere and just as quickly disappear. Experts who follow the Mets are saying that there is alot of his game that's deficient.

But the Mets fans are calling in fretting about the team possibly not signing Murphy and Cespedes next year . They should just enjoy the moment and worry about next year in November .

If you go position by position some teams have better talent than the Royals. Toronto is but one example. However, what the Royals lack in talent is more than by their play as a team.

"A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is... A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

I'll take the Mets in 7 . I respect the Royals too much to go less. The thing the Mets have to realize is that the Royals do have success against hard throwing pitchers. The Mets pitchers on the other hand have done an excellent job with their seconday pitches when their fastball has not worked .

The Mets power will be negated somewhat at Kauffman Field ,and the Royals have much better middle relievers . Having Colon and Neisse in the bull pen improves their depth somewhat . But ,Mets fans will be holding their breath in the middle innings if their starters can't go deep. The Mets IMHO have a big advantage on the bench ,especially if Juan Uribe is a go. They have been playing interchangable parts since the trade deadline. Position by position they are dead even with the Royals having slight advantages in some positions ( 3rd ,1st ,short ,and CF (and DH ) .The Mets have the edge at 2B ,and the 2 corner OF positions .Catchers are even. I'll give the Royals a slight advantage at manager because Yost took them to game 7 last year.

As you said ;the Mets starters are the deciding factor . It's been a while since I've seen a 1-4 as solid. Matts would be a number 1 pitcher on many teams. Dare I say that with a full season they have the potential to be as good as the 1971 Orioles ? ( Jim Palmer,Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar , Pat Dobson all 20 game winners in 1970) . It's scary to think how good they will be when Wheeler comes back next year.

Which means as long as they realize this and use the off speed stuff wisely they will have success. Not too many batters can go into an at bat looking for both types of pitches, unless they know the pitcher likes to use certain pitches (without fail) in certain situations...

He had 39 starts .325 IP .and 30 complete games. His record was 24-13 with an ERA of 2.77, striking out 263 batters while walking only 37. That is unheard of in the era of the 5 and 6 man rotation.

The Mets walked on egg shells getting Harvey starts while worrying about his innings pitched. They will not start deGromm in the opener to give his tired arm an extra day's rest .

The average starter gets 32-33 starts per year if he stays healthy and they don't finagle the rotation around days off to pitch them 1-2 games more. You could get 20 wins but you have to be efficient to do it.

Only 2 pitchers won 20 games this year and that was Arrieta and Keuchel, and there have been years were there weren't any 20 game winners in either league...

"In 1991, John Smiley tossed the fewest amount of innings two-hundred seven and two-thirds by a National League twenty game winner. By comparison; Will White, who holds the record for most innings pitched by a National League twenty game winner, threw six-hundred eighty in 1879."

Both teams are scrappy and won't get swept. Mets may have an overall starting pitching advantage; Royals have the bats and defense in their strength.

Defense was the big difference yesterday. ARoid called it in the pregame ....if the Mets catch the ball they win. Amazing when you think about it . Everyone knew that Escobar swings at the 1st pitch most of the time .Still Harvey gave him a pitch he can drive. That being said ,it should've been a routine play .

An obvious second guess is playing Kelly Johnson as DH instead of one of the outfielders . That would've freed CF for gold glover Juan Lagares .

The winning run was also the result of a sloppy error by David Wright.

I think the Royals did the Mets a favor letting them get some at bats off of game 4 starter Chris Young. Again ARoid made the point that batters aren't used to big tall pitchers who throw off speed instead of heat . Getting some at bats against him will help them know what to expect.

Harvey/Catcher made too many pitching mistakes in the 6th inning which allowed the Royals back in the game...

lol one of the big questions here in NY is 'did the Royals catcher have some pine tar on his shin pads ? '

http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb-news/4659461-world-series-2015-salvador-perez- foreign-substance-pine-tar-shin-guard-fox-sports-broadcast

Maybe that's why Wright muffed to grounder in the 14th .

Ok now that the World Series is starting tonight does anybody have any predictions as to who is going to win and in how many games???

As much as I would like to see the Mets take it I don't think that it will go seven games. KC's pitching is very good and deep.

It's legal for the catcher, but nol for a pitcher. That's not why the Mets lost.

Looks like it's kinda windy in NYC tonight also looks like the home plate ump is squeezing the strike zone, Zobrist should have been rung up looking at strike 3...

Mets batting order looks like what I used to do when I had the right players, lefty, righty, lefty, righty, etc...etc...etc...

Looks like David Wright just made up for the ump squeezing the strike zone...

Syndergaard said to Escobar 'if you are going to swing at the 1st pitch ....swing at this' ! Syndergaard told SNY’s Steve Gelbs; “That’s my plate out there, not theirs.”

Early Wynn once said that the pitcher has to look at the batter as his mortal enemy . When asked if he would intentionally plunk his mother he responded , "It would depend how well she was hitting " .

That's what you have to do as a pitcher to keep the hitter off balance, the madder you get him the more he'll swing at just about anything... OTOH the hitters try to send hot shots back up thru the box to get the pitcher a little antsy, all just part of the game...

I'd say he got the message...

The Mets shoddy defense was again exposed in game 4 . There was talk about Murphy's free agent value going up with his power surge in the NLCS. But many pundits who follow the Mets daily warned to not over value him . SNY broadcaster Gary Cohen ;speaking with WFAN's Joe and Evan about the prospect of re-signing Murphy said : “I have no interest,” ... “I’ve got (Wilmer) Flores and (Dilson) Herrera, both of whom can play second base. I have no interest in bringing back Daniel Murphy. Joe, you watch this guy play every day … He’s a nice hitter, and he’s hit some home runs lately, but he’s not a high on-base percentage guy.

“He’s not a big power hitter. He’s a good hitter, he’s a good hitter. He’s a good sixth or seventh hitter in a good lineup. That’s what he is. And he hurts you so badly in the field and on the bases, and with all the craziness I think it’s time to move on … Murph is a lovable guy, but I think he’s a net negative, and I’ve always felt that way."

The Mets bullpen continues to be exposed too.

Thanks Tom. And yes that BP cannot compare to the KC depth.

Clippard is a disaster in the playoffs causing Familia to get multiple 2 innings of work.

The Mets have a bright future IMO. They are a couple of pieces away from being perennial playoff contenders.

Well congratulations to the KC Royals.

Great team and well deserved after a 30 year wait!

The Mets hit 30 years next season:)

The Rangers and Astros still looking for their first WS title.

So maybe next year I will get my Mets-Rangers WS:)
