Title: Head investigator: Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl shouldn't go to prison for leaving his post

The officer who led the investigation of Bowe Bergdahl's disappearance and capture in Afghanistan says the Army sergeant shouldn't go to prison.

Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl testified Friday at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Dahl said Bergdahl said he walked away from his post as part of a plan to spark a search and get the attention of a general so he could express his concerns about his unit's leadership.

Dahl said Bergdahl felt the problems put his platoon in danger, but that Bergdahl's perceptions were "completely off the mark."

Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban after leaving his post in 2009. He's charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

His Article 32 hearing concluded Friday. It will help determine whether he face a court-martial.

The Government is still insisting this Nation is at war. A soldier leaving his assigned post during war is punishable under the UCMJ. Yet, a high ranking officer is telling us that this person shouldn't be punished under the UCMJ. Is this person really an American Major General?

USMA, class of '82.

Four things you should know about the Army general who will investigate Bowe Bergdahl's capture

There are three kinds of people in the world: those that can add and those that can't

Under Obama it truly is who you know or who you blow. Berghdal either has a powerful family, or great suction.

After Odinga appeared with the weird Bergdahl parents, he is naturally reluctant to admit any error in trading the 5 terrorist leaders for Bergdahl.

These remarks are suited to a defense attorney, not an investigator.

I'd guess he's a Dem hack and under the WH's thumb.

It's unprofessional for an investigator to reach such a conclusion at all, let alone air it in public before court martial proceedings.

Bergdahl's story is that the outpost was being run poorly so he was planning to walk 19 miles in rough and hostile territory to tattle on his superiors at the firebase. It doesn't hold water to me but that is the story line this major general is peddling.

Yes unprofessional and uncharacteristic for this specific officer. He ruled with an iron fist when a Brigade commander.

If Dahl concluded such (and this is an accurate and full story of his comments) then how did the preferred charges become harsh? Odd isn't it. Defense counsel sometimes ask an officer what their professional and personal opinions are with regards with a certain situation. For example Dahl was not there but what if he was the affected commander and what actions he would personally take. Those questions are best answered "I was not there."

Dahl should have kept his comments brief and sterile.

What's interesting is the investigating officer is the one who recommends charges. If Dahl did not recommend prison then the UCMJ convening authority considered his findings and preferred the desertion charges anyway.

More to the story I'm sure.

Dahl is not the article 32 investigating officer. What comes out of the 32 hearing and recommendations is what will go forward to the UCMJ convening authority.

You can still be punished under UCMJ and not do prison time. I'm sure what Dahl was hinting at was "time served" under the Taliban. Which is bogus of course.

We have a couple of paragraphs from the AP wire on Dahl's comments.

I will await the transcript to make further judgment.

The comments posited by the article are uncharacteristic of Dahl.

What makes me think there is more to the story is he recommended the charges the 32 investigating officer is now considering. Why would he recommend charges and then testify against them. Makes no sense.

Yeah, pull my finger. After all,WHAT General Officer believes in that old "chain of command" nonsense?

Or is maybe maneuvering for a REALLY great job and paycheck with a think tank once he retires.

Not if he has any self-respect or honor. He is obligated to follow the orders of the "fool on the hill",but his DUTY it to the US Army and the soldiers under his command, and Officer that is duty and honor bound can possibly be willing to overlook a deserter that abandoned his post in a war zone. I'm betting his wife gets a star before she retires, too.

It occurs to me that both he and his Colonel wife are ready to retire, and she doesn't have a star and they will both want consultant jobs in DC when they hang up the uniforms.

One career ends,and another begins.

May

be this is him/them showing they can be team players?
