A bizarre accident at the Frisco Gun Club on Eldorado Parkway Wednesday.

The manager says shortly after 2:00 p.m. a patron dropped a bullet, the powder ignited and the shrapnel from the bullet went into his leg.

They called police and ambulance and the man was taken to the hospital. No word on his condition.

More to come.

Doesn't pass the smell test.

A bullet, aside from being fired from a gun will only detonate by a striking of the primer (which is impossible by dropping it) or HEAT... like tossing a cartridge in a fire pit.

I bet he accidentally shot himself and didn't want to sound stupid.

I'm thinking 22lr.

The primer is in the rim and the rim also serves as the anvil.

If that is what happened, I'd call it a freak accident.

"I bet he accidentally shot himself and didn't want to sound stupid."

Or accidentally fired a round into the floor. But it did not go off by falling to the floor.

Remember Newton's Second Law of Motion: The external forces F on an object is equal to the mass m of that object multiplied by the acceleration vector a of the object: F = ma.

The force, F, is the exploding gunpowder. That force acts equally on both the bullet and the shell casing. If the shell casing is not confined by a gun, it will accelerate at a much faster rate than the bullet. Assuming the shell doesn't rupture.

I doubt the weight of a 22 shell, via falling, could impact the rim enough to detonate the cartridge. I've dropped many 22's on the ground. I've even pulled the bullets from them with pliers, dumped out the powder... and detonated them with strikes with a hammer. It takes a pretty good whack to detonate one.

The video at the link below calls it a "shooting" but the round wasn't in a firearm. Seems like the reporterette wants a Purple Heart and a Pulitzer Prize for showing up at the firing range to cover the story?

One Injured by Shrapnel at Frisco [Texas] Gun Club

One person has been hospitalized after being wounded by shrapnel at a Frisco firing range.

According to the Frisco Police Department, an emergency call was received from the Frisco Gun Club on Eldorado Parkway at about 2:15 p.m. after a customer was injured while reloading.

Officials said the bullet exploded after it was inadvertently dropped to the ground while being loaded into a magazine.

The exploding round sent shrapnel flying into the customer's side, causing a minor injury. The customer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment with injuries that are not life threatening.

On Tuesday, an Irving SWAT officer with more than 20 years on the force was injured at a gun range when fragments from a discharged round ricocheted and hit the officer in the hand. The officer was hospitalized and expected to be released Tuesday evening.

The investigation into Wednesday's incident is ongoing.

NBC 5's Meredith Yeomans contributed to this report.

Not a centerfire .22, to be sure.

Rimfire cartridges, not so sure.

I think maybe he dropped a cocked handgun, and it went off when it hit the cement floor because of worn or modified sears.

People,if you do not know and completely understand what you are doing,do NOT stone or otherwise modify your sears to get a "hair trigger.

If you happen to buy a used gun that has already been modified for a "hair" or "target" trigger, take it to a competent gunsmith to have new sears installed. Target/"hair" triggers are NOT for guns you carry or shoot anywhere but at a gun range. Period!

Makes no difference. You could throw one on a cement floor as hard as you can throw it,and it still wouldn't go off. Takes a sharp and strong impact.

Must have been one of those amped-up steroid dummies shooting at a steel plate only a few feet away.

IF that is what he was doing,he needs to lose his badge because he is lacking in judgement to the point where he can't be trusted to enforce the law.

Not a centerfire .22, to be sure.

I wouldn't be so quick to rule out centerfire or a larger calibre with more weight... It may be "impossible" if dropped onto a smoothe/flat surface, but not impossible on a hard/irregular surface... perhaps some gravel or crushed rock on top of concrete? It would still be a freak accident, but I can imagine the corner of a small rock hitting the primer without touching the case...

I remember a number of years ago - a guy (in Georgia if memory
serves) had a fuse burn out in his pickup truck.
Not having a replacement fuse - he decided to use a
.22 cartridge instead.

Worked wonderfully - until the electricity flowing through
the circuit caused the cartridge to overheat and discharge.
Which was inconvenient since it caused the bullet to lodge
in the man's knee. (DOH!)

Very good advice Pete. I hope those here that are not that experienced with firearms will heed your advice.
