Shaquille O'Neal continues to make millions off the court.
Basketball great Shaquille ONeal made millions on the court, and he continues to make millions off the court in endorsement deals for fast food, clothing, nightclubs and more.
But there was one deal that he passed on which he now considers to be one of the biggest financial mistakes of his life.
Sports reporter Graham Bensinger sat down with ONeal in a recent interview to discuss his various businesses ventures. During the segment for In Depth with Graham Bensinger," he asks the retired NBA All-Star one of his biggest business regrets and without hesitation, ONeal talked about why he declined to work with Starbucks' CEO Howard Schultz.
So my agent called me up and he says Howard Schultz wants to do business with you, ONeal explains. And Im like coffee, eh, because growing up, in my household, Id never seen a black person drink coffee. So it was my thought process that black people didnt drink coffee.
Shaking his head and laughing, ONeal says that his family mostly drank sweet tea and hot chocolate for a caffeine fix. But Schulz still offered him the opportunity to open to Starbucks franchises in predominantly African-American communities. But at the time ONeal said he didnt believe in it and, as a principle, only invested in things he believed in.
So I looked at the great Howard Schultzs face and said Black people dont drink coffee sir I dont think it's gonna work. And you should have seen the look on his face, ONeal said. But that decision ended up being a costly one for the former pro.
Now were still good friends today but that was one of my worst business decisions because now, every time, on every corner in every city, every country you see a Starbucks
Im like aw.
Shaq may have missed out on an opportunity to partner with Schulz but another basketball legend saw a great opportunity with the coffee chain. Magic Johnson bought several franchises in the mid-1990s, eventually selling 105 locations back to the company in 2010.
