  • Reports swirled that Perry's campaign was running on fumes and he was down to just a few paid staffers
  • Second White House run was hampered by criminal anuse-of-power indictment Democrats brought against him in his home state

p class="mol-para-with-font">Former Texas Governor Rick Perry said Friday that he is pulling out of the 2016 race.

'Today I am suspending my campaign for the presidency of the United States,' Perry said, according to prepared remarks released in advance of a speech at the conservative Eagle Forum in St. Louis, Missouri.

The two-time White House candidate was polling at 1 per cent among Republicans and had reduced his campaign staff to just a few full-time aides.

'We have a tremendous field – the best in a generation – so I step aside knowing our party is in good hands,' Perry said in a statement.

I kinda doubted Perry had a chance. People couldn't forget his 2016 flop. And he never found a tycoon backer or any group like community bankers to back him.

Too bad. There was a lot to like about his record and his ability to win some Hispanic votes without pandering on open borders and amnesty.

I expect a few other dominoes to fall in the next month. Maybe Jindal. I think a few others like Gillmore and Pataki are just running a book tour or trying to raise lobbying fees. I think Graham is on a shoestring and might stay in through South Carolina.

Really not surprised. It seems the only candidate to emerge from the kids table debate is Fiorina.

Rick Perry would just be taking votes from Ted Cruz. Not only Jindal but I think Rick Santorum is looking at the environment of Iowa and seeing the landscape is different than in 2012.

Huck and Santorum won't like it but I don't think any candidate (other than an incumbent prez) has won Iowa more than once. Iowa is for unknown and underfunded candidates, to give some nobody (e.g. Jimmuh Carter) a chance instead of only big names with deep pockets winning the nomination. But having won Iowa already in past cycles, those two can't expect to win it again. So they should drop out. I couldn't figure out why they ran to begin with unless they're on a book tour.

The other name not mentioned much lately is Scott Walker.

He's fallen to tenth in Iowa, his supposed stronghold.
