Paris (AFP) - A former French minister stirred up controversy Friday after saying Germany "took our Jews and gave us Arabs" as France began taking some of the thousands of refugees arriving in Germany. Patrick Devedjian, a right-winger who served in the governments of presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy, made the remark at a press conference, but quickly tried to backtrack on social media. "My humorous jest was misplaced," Devedjian wrote on his Twitter account, saying he regretted it all the more because he himself helps refugees in need. Devedjian, who comes from an Armenian family and now leads the Hauts-de- Seine region of wealthy suburbs west of Paris, said the joke was meant to be about Syrian and Iraqi refugees. He flirted with the extreme-right in his youth before moving into more mainstream politics. As thousands continue to flee poverty and conflict in Africa and the Middle East, Germany is expected to take in 800,000 asylum-seekers this year, four times the number in 2014 and far more than any other European country. France has said it will take 24,000 refugees over the next two years, but President Francois Hollande has warned that without a united EU policy to share the burden of migrants, the borderless Schengen system could collapse. The French have no place criticizing the Germans. France has been taking on North African Muslims for years.

A halariously droll and sarcastic observation, although France has made its own contribution to the problem.

Well, most of Muslim North Africa was French. In World War I the French Army was 15% African, northern and sub-Saharan. Africans did a lot of bleeding and dying for France during the wars, and when the French birth rate had collapsed long ago, the French filled their ranks with troops from the Empire. France's North African population did not mostly get there through illegal immigration, but through legal immigration during the "30 Glorious Years", when French growth outstripped the labor force and they needed labor, so they imported it from the Empire. Trouble is, the French baby boom became a baby bust after contraception was introduced, but the North Africans have kept right on having babies (it's a Muslim thing - quoting Genesis: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth). The earth that's gotten filled is France, but the North African French are not like Mexicans in the US or Syrians and Turks in Germany. Most of them are French-born, of immigrant parents or grandparents who came legally. Islam is what makes it difficult. Throughout history, France has been a sort of melting pot. but Muslims don't change religions, and they don't abandon theirs either, the way that Europeans have. So while most of the French North Africans are culturally French, they are culturally French Muslim, which is a pretty distinct thing, with Islam as a real complicating factor.
