Thanks. I don't have one,so I can't watch it. I srream videos using my computer,my Roku 3,or my Channel Master tuner.

You can stream YouTube to your Roku as you know. Much the same thing.

A Chromecast can override a compliant TV's HDMI inputs and force the TV to display the Chromecast's output, then switch to a YouTube stream, a Netflix stream, a tab from a Chrome browser on your computer, also a few other compliant streaming services.

A Chromecast relies on a PC or smartphone to initiate the streaming where a Roku has more ability to browse and select videos to stream itself.

How useful is your Chromecast without a computer/tablet/smartphone?

A Roku provides all its functionality without any computer/tablet/smartphone.

A Chromecast can be more useful in a few cases. Like if a friend drops over and wants to cast a video on his phone onto your TV. A Roku won't do that. Or you can cast from your computer straight on to Chromecast, like the vid you posted on this thread. Can you name any other Chromecast advantages over a Roku? Pete could still watch your video by just using his Roku remote to find the video at YouTube and play it directly without using a computer/tablet/smartphone.

Seems to buffer less on movies.

It has an ap called video stream that works great to stream content on your own comuter. Roku buffers more on that also.

Roku you have to have a remote.

Chromecast can cast anything on the web even libertysflame if you wished to. Roku can't.

I use my chromecast about 10 times as much as roku.

Roku you are limited to the channels that they have. Like I said Chrome can cast anyting on the web.

Like you said Roku can cast youtube with the youtube ap. Which I use and like.

I don't hate Chromecast but most people would get more use from a Roku if they're trying to pull the plug.

A Roku can also stream from a computer. Also, 6 other ways to stream from local devices/computers to Roku.

I'm pretty happy with my 2. One for the house and one for the shop.

I also bought two others and gave them to friends as gifts.

I noticed a low price on Tivo's new OTA DVR.

Amazon: TiVo Roamio OTA HD 500GB DVR w/ Product Lifetime Service, 4 Tuners for up to 4 simultaneous channel recording for $299.99 with free shipping ($399.99 value).

The big sell here is the included Tivo lifetime schedule subscription. It also incorporates YouTube, Hulu, Amazon Video and Netflix. You can buy extension streamer boxes for your bedrooms or around the house starting around $90.

Even if you don't happen to need one right now, that is a strong deal for an HD DVR with Tivo subscription. Pretty ideal for cordcutters who still want OTA HDTV. Some users are saying that upgrading it from 500GB to 2TB or 3TB is as easy as any HD drive swap.

I'd say it's a better box/service than a ChannelMaster (unless you already have a CM and are happy with it).

Tech bump

I am not all that happy with my Channel Master. It works great as a tuner, but leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to their software. Since my smart tv (and I am assuming everyone else's) comes with a built in tuner and even netflix, amazon, etc, etc, etc now,the software advantages are why you would buy one.

Sometimes I have closed captions,and sometimes I don't.

The Mute button never works.

Neither does the screen saver.

Their search engine seems to miss a lot of stuff. Maybe due to not being capitalized at the beginning of words,or maybe because of misspellings. Most search engines start offering you choices as soon as you type in a few letter, but theirs offers you nothing like that.

Since I already have it I will be keeping it until it dies, but I'd sure be taking a hard look at that one if I didn't already have the CM.

That's what I thought. I suppose you could still get $150 out of your CM on eBay if you wanted to try the Tivo. Probably more trouble than it's worth but we all know that Tivo's channel listings and search capability and flexibility are unmatched.

No kidding. Has to be the best addition to television since color.

I do have the TIVO on my amazon wish list,so chances are the first 300 bucks that comes my way that isn't obligated to go to somewhere else will be going to amazon.

I can always use my old CM out in my workshop.

You would spend around $150 a year just to subscribe to Tivo's schedule/guide service.

Here, they're basically giving you the box for the price of two years subscription. Last I heard, buying a lifetime Tive subscription cost around $500. It has been $400-$500 for a long time.

Years back, they had a similar box for the SD NTSC market, made by Toshiba, also had a DVD player. I bought one on closeout and gave it to my mom. It worked for 2-3 years, then she got cable. I used it off and on for a few years, then sent it to a friend who used it for another five years. It used a dialup modem to call Tivo to get its schedule once a week.

Yeah, but right now I am trying to get the chrome redone and get the body on my 51 Ford coupe ready for paint.

Then I have to spend a bunch of money on the interior.

It's all about priorities.

I will have to watch this.

If you don't already have a tuner and a HD antenna,I highly suggest you get one.

I am saving right at 100 bucks a month over what I was paying for a sat dish subscription, and am actually watching and recording more shows.

I did keep a basic subscription for a sat dish that included 3 months of free HBO,Showtime, and Cinema for $53 a month so I could watch mostly those channels, plus use the TIVO to record them.

Between my mostly basic sat dish setup,my HD antenna, my ROKU 3,my Amazon Prime account (basically free) ,my Netflix account ($8.56 per month),my HULU account which I will drop soon ($7.99 per month),I have more selections that ever before . I get 39 broadcast channels from the HD Antenna, over 1400 channels from my ROKU-3 (99 percent free)plus Hulu,Amazon, and several free streaming channels from my CM tuner.

All this for a total of 53 bucks a month with no contract. Yeah, every 3 months I have to cancel the sat dish and then renew it to keep getting HBO and Showtime for free, but that just takes a phone call. If the dish company stops doing that,I will just cancel them entirely because it would be as cheap or cheaper to just pay a few bucks to stream the shows I watch via my ROKU or the web.

BTW,the picture with the HD antenna is usually better than the picture from the sat dish if I am tuning into a HD channel.

BTW-2,Roku just came out with the ROKU-4,and it's supposed to have more features and work quicker than the Roku-3

I currently have AT&T. That said, I signed up for Google Fiber several months ago, and they are now laying a large, orange 3 inch cable to each subscribing home in my complex. Unlike other cable companies that bury their cable 6 to 12 inches underground, Google is burying their monster cables 5 feet underground. I should be connected to Google Fiber by the end of the month.

I have never heard of Google Fiber, but IF it is what I suspect it is,you are going to soon be able to do some serious high speed/high data streaming.

Generally speaking,I download at around 130 mps (today only 72 mps),and I have no trouble watching movies or tv shows being streamed. No stalling,no lost signals,no problems at all.

I have no idea what your download data speed will be,but it will be a new Corvette compared to the Model A I'm using.

With that kind of speed, you need to try playing some of the video games out these days. "Real life" doesn't look that clear and bright.

Google Fiber provides an Internet connection speed of up to one gigabit per second (1,000 Mbit/s) for both download and upload which is roughly 100 times faster access than what most Americans have. Google Fiber says its service allows for the download of a full movie in less than two minutes.

I don't even think you can call that "streaming".

Maybe "flashing",which is really more appropriate because there are probably more porn movies streamed than regular movies.

Gary will stream multiple 1080p streams at once and also the new 2160p (4K video) that is appearing now in some cellphones and cameras. A picture with 4 times as many pixels as regular 1080p.

He'll have to have a 4K-cable computer screen or TV to enjoy such content. I tried out YouTube on a standard DSL network in a Circuit City store and it staggered the entire store's network. It would load a few seconds of video then stutter, kept doing that throughout. The store's internet connection just couldn't handle the 4K video even though it could deliver mostly smooth 1080p video.

Lucky dog. I wish I lived close to Kansas City. It is interesting that Google Fiber has actually attracted noticeable numbers of people who moved there just to get Google Fiber for their online businesses. It is spurring economic growth there.

Currently GoogleFiber is being installed in Kansas City, Austin, and Provo. However, other cities are already planned. https://fiber.google.com/newcities/
