Title: Staffer for NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo Shot in Head Before West Indian Day Parade

The West Indian Day Parade, a rollicking, colorful celebration of Caribbean culture, music, style and food, rolled through New York City’s streets Monday but, once again, was marred by predawn violence that left one man dead and an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo in critical condition.

Cuomo identified his wounded staffer as Carey Gabay, a first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corporation. Gabay was walking with his brother near the Brooklyn parade route at 3:40 a.m. when he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs, according to police officials.

A bullet struck Gabay, 43, in the head. Cuomo said Gabay, a Harvard-educated lawyer who had worked as an assistant counsel to the governor, and his wife are expecting their first child.

“I’m the governor of the state of New York, and there’s not a thing I can do,” Cuomo told reporters after he visited his staffer’s family at Kings County Hospital. “There’s not a thing I can say, and there’s nothing I can do. And sometimes it just hurts.”

No arrests have made been, police said. The shooting was one of several outbursts of violence in the neighborhoods surrounding the parade, which included the stabbing death of a 24-year-old man at 2 a.m. near Grand Army Plaza.

Bloodshed before or after the West Indian Day celebration has become a sadly familiar part of the parade routine. Last year, a recent parolee opened fire into a crowd of revelers, killing one man and wounding several others. And in 2013, a 1-year-old boy sitting in his stroller was killed by a bullet meant for his father.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton dismissed talk of scuttling the preparade festivities – which center on a surreal midnight march known as J’Ouvert – and said the New York Police Department was working with local leaders to make the event safer. There was a heavy police presence along the route, and several NYPD helicopters hovered overhead.

The parade went on as scheduled and drew hundreds of thousands of people to the stretch along Eastern Parkway. Throbbing basslines pulsated along the route, propelling outlandishly clad revelers to dance and those along the sidelines to bob their heads as they ate indigenous foods.

“This is our heritage. It means so much to me to see all these colors and music,” said Alicia Jackson of Brooklyn. “It’s one of my favorite days of the year.”

Politicians dotted the route, with de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, who is of Caribbean descent, drawing cheers as they waved flags and periodically dashed to the sidelines to shake hands and pose for selfies.

But the parade was also the latest venue for New York’s most high-profile political feud. The march and an official preparade breakfast were the first public events since July in which Cuomo and de Blasio, who are locked in a simmering dispute, were both supposed to attend.

But their paths never crossed. Cuomo left the breakfast about 10 minutes before de Blasio arrived, and the two men, both Democrats, marched separately.

At the breakfast, Cuomo was asked if he planned to speak to the mayor. The governor responded by asking, “Is he here?” and when told no, Cuomo glared and bluntly said, “There’s your answer.”

Hours after the parade, Cuomo and several other elected officials were planning to fly to Puerto Rico to offer advice to the island government grappling with a debt crisis. De Blasio was not invited. (1 image)

Impossible!

It's illegal for gang members or regular non-multimillionaire denizens of NYC to own or possess guns.

Must have been a roving pack of off-duty cops or bodyguards.

The West Indian Day parade has had a lot of lawlessness and violence associated with it over the years .The cops are afraid to enforce the law because of the chance of riots. So for the night ,the mob rules the streets .

“They’ve always downplayed the violence by saying shootings weren’t parade- related, unless someone was shot on the route, on a float. Then one year, someone was shot off a float,” said the cop, referring to an incident in 2003.

Cops routinely confiscate booze from revelers at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, but detectives union chief Michael Palladino said he was ordered not to do the same thing at the West Indian-American Day Parade.

“In my 36 years with the department, that’s the only parade where I was told to look the other way,” Palladino said. “The political theme of decriminalization started at that parade decades ago.”

A retired NYPD cop said, “No one in their right mind wants to do that detail.”

“It’s the worst event of the year, in terms of violence, and it goes on for days,” the ex-cop said. http://nypost.com/2015/09/07/cops-turn-blind-eye-to-blatant-law-breaking-at- west-indian-day-parade/

Cuomo of course latched onto the gun violence angle even though NYC has some of the strictest most unconstitutional gun laws in the country . I'm betting the whole parade route is a no gun zone.

Praying for Carey Gabay's recovery . He sounds like a good guy who lifted himself up from a housing project ,overcame many obsticles, and has tried to make a positive impact .

Those people are more fond of booze and violence than the Irish???????

“In my 36 years with the department, that’s the only parade where I was told to look the other way,” Palladino said. “The political theme of decriminalization started at that parade decades ago.”

That was because they are the hated white people, not because they are actually dangerous. I'm betting one guy with a belt-fed and a couple of good ammo bearers could have them all high-stepping in a matter of seconds.

You can always count on the Irish to run in situations like that, but you never know if they will run away or run at you. Especially drunken ones during a St Paddy's Day parade. Chances are you would be stomped to death by a mob of drunks. The Irish,in general, are a troublesome people by nature.

Amen prayers for Mr. Gabay.

Yet again, we have double standards in liberal administrations (NYC, yes even the 'Republican' admins) in NYC.

Maybe Mayor "DeBozo" will confiscate that large Slurpee instead.

Maybe they are upset that St Patrick drove out the snakes ? There is this legend that goes around the homosexual circles that St Paddy had an affair with a man. Of course there is no evidence of that ,but that hasn't stopped them from historical distortion before .

Of course...according to the sodomite historical revisionism 'everyone' famous must have been homosexual!

Or just because someone never had a wife and kids in history were gay.

We have sneakypete almost daily making comments about Christ and the Apostles. Even though we evidence some of the Apostles were married and had children.

They get it because of St. Patrick's very ambiguous confession of a sin he had committed in his youth. The details are not recorded, but it was a sin sufficient to cause the Church to consider stripping him of his bishopric and not letting him go to missionary work in Ireland.

St. Patrick's defense of himself is that when he did what he did, he was just a young man who was in truth a pagan, completely oblivious to the light of the Gospel.

The sin was never identified, but that defense doesn't sound like a defense of murder. It sounds like the defense of some sexual sin. Late Romans and medievals were not very prudish. St. Augustine spent time watching gladiatorial bloodshed and visiting prostitutes, but that didn't cause folks to be concerned about letting him go and do things once he converted.

There was a quality to Patrick's sin that was particularly scandalous to the late Roman Christians.

Here is what Patrick himself wrote. It sure sounds like a sexual sin:

"They [Patrick’s elders or congregation] brought up against me after thirty years an occurrence I had confessed before becoming a deacon. On account of the anxiety in my sorrowful mind, I laid before my close friend what I had perpetrated on a day – nay, rather in one hour – in my boyhood because I was not yet proof against sin. God knows – I do not – whether I was fifteen years old at the time, and I did not then believe in the living God, nor had I believed, since my infancy; but I remained in death and unbelief until I was severely rebuked, and in truth I was humbled every day by hunger and nakedness."

First thanks for posting the excerpt from Patrick of Hibernia--ST Patrick. I post his confession each year here and used to on LP for a few years back. Love it. It's honest, humble and direct.

Ambiguous is an understatement:) I too saw it as some sexual sin but saw it as a child who grew up in a Christian home. I believe tradition has it his father was clergy at some point.

Speculation would be sexual sin where expectations were high. Kind of the modern version of a pastor's son or daughter caught in sexual sin.

Well, even if he did committ an homosexual act 'rather in one hour', shows the gay lobby that the Light of the Gospel releases us from the bondage of such sin. So they should be looking to Patrick on how to get well spiritually.

Of course there is. It's the nature of the beast. I have no doubt there are rumors about every successful and prominent male ever born having homosexual relations with another man. It's what they do to try to make themselves appear to be "normal".

Maybe he had sex with a goat.

It doesn't matter. It's none of OUR business, certainly.

It's God's business, and Patrick not only was made to pay for his sins by God through much hardship, but he repented and confessed his sin, and was forgiven it by God.

So his sin is irrelevant. Sex with a man. Sex with five women, at once. Sex with a goat. Murder. Torture. It doesn't matter. St. Paul, when he was Saul, rounded up Christians for prison, torture and death. Then he saw the light and stopped and rightly rued it everafter.

Christians forgive and forget, just as God does. If they're real Christians anyway. False Christians hold grudges and find ways to weasel out of the obligation to forgive, but you can't weasel out of anything with God.
