UK Telegraph | Christopher Williams | 22 Aug 2015

A British technology company has claimed a major smartphone breakthrough by developing an iPhone that can go a week without recharging, running instead off a built-in hydrogen fuel cell.

Intelligent Energy has made a working iPhone 6 prototype containing both a rechargeable battery and its own patented technology, which creates electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, producing only small amounts of water and heat as waste.

The company is believed to be working closely with Apple. In what it claims is a world first, it has incorporated a fuel cell system into the current iPhone 6 without any alteration to the size or shape of the device. The only cosmetic difference compared with other handsets are rear vents so an imperceptible amount of water vapour can escape.

Executives believe that for the price of a latte, a market worth as much as £300bn a year could open up.

Henri Winand, chief executive of Intelligent Energy, who refused to comment on rumours of Apple involvement, said: “To our knowledge this has never been done before...snip MORE: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/11818151/Revealed-the-first-hydrogen-powered-battery-that-will-charge-your-Apple-iPhone-for-a-week.html

A week?

So how do you refill its teeny-tiny hydrogen tank every week or so?

"So how do you refill its teeny-tiny hydrogen tank every week or so?"

Pull into your nearest Shell station and say, "Fill 'er up!"

Well, that Upp fuel cell recharger costs 50£ for a refill.

It sounds very pricey, even in these vapid self-serving corporate press releases.

Yup, strap the Hindenburg to your wrist.
What could possibly go wrong?

"Well, that Upp fuel cell recharger costs 50£ for a refill."

Yes and no.

The product contains two parts -- the Upp fuel cell itself and the Upp hydrogen cartridge. That's your starter kit and goes for £149 ($235.).

Once the reusable cartridge is empty, the customer simply exchanges it for a full replacement cartridge for £5.95 (about $9.) -- like you exchange gas grill propane tanks.

If, however, you want a spare cartridge (incl. fuel), that can be had for £49.95 ($79.).

Yup, strap the Hindenburg to your wrist.

Hindenburg Trivia: There was a smoking lounge on the Hindenburg. No matches though- they used a coil.

What could possibly go wrong?

Did you know that millions of people around the world store and use a highly explosive gas every day? Sometimes they store it next to their houses.

The difference between Hydrogen and Propane is that escaped Hydrogen rises towards space at 14 MPH while escaped Propane sinks and collects, waiting for a spark.

The difference between Hydrogen and Propane...

Yes, yes - even I myself have a propane gas grill
on the back patio about 4 feet from the back dining
room door - complete with a full propane tank
just ready to catastrophically explode at any minute!
I'm afraid!

Yup, strap the Hindenburg to your wrist.

C'mon, you just don't like to hear about the tragic consequences of driving your Hindenburgmobile through suburban America.

I was just kidding about the Hindenburg, by the way.

Also - decades ago - I visited the site of the
Hindenburg crash. Nothing to see - slightly scorched
concrete - that was it.
