Title: For Koch group, winning is rising as priority over purity

The head of the Koch brothers' flagship political organization says a Republican winning the presidency is becoming a higher priority for more of its members, suggesting a rift between pragmatists and ideologues.

Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips said conservative fatigue after George W. Bush's presidency in 2008 and overconfidence in efforts to beat President Barack Obama in 2012 have focused more members on winning back the White House than he's seen since the group formed a decade ago.

"I do think there is a sense of urgency about the future," he said, "that you owe it to your principles to win for those principles."

It's hard to tell how deep the divide between pragmatists and more ideologues runs, although reactions were mixed at the group's annual conference in Ohio Friday and Saturday. Five presidential candidates addressed the roughly 3,600 conservative activists from around the country, from tea party star Ted Cruz to Jeb Bush, a relative newcomer to the group's events.

"I think people are coming to the conclusion that there is no perfect candidate," Americans for Prosperity Iowa Director Drew Klein said.

Americans for Prosperity spent more than $30 million on television advertising in 2012 attempting to defeat Obama. The group does not plan to endorse a candidate in the Republican primary, but its leaders haven't decided whether they will advertise on behalf of the 2016 GOP nominee, Phillips said.

Based on the variety of reactions to the candidates by members who attended the conference in Columbus, they would have a long way to go to reach consensus.

"I'm listening to everyone," said Leona Poston of Kentucky. "We need to win this time."

Cruz, the tea party favorite since his 2012 election, sparked deafening cheers in the Columbus Convention Center auditorium even before he took the stage, entering to the 1980s power anthem "Eye of the Tiger." During his speech Saturday, he punched at the lines promising to "repeal every word of Obamacare" and "rip to shreds this catastrophic Iranian nuclear deal."

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio stooped to shake the outstretched hands of fans as he took the stage to speak Saturday.

By contrast Bush, who spoke the day before, earned far fewer cheers than either Cruz or Rubio and received mostly polite applause from the anti-tax, economic conservative audience.

Conservative industrialists Charles and David Koch have cracked the door open for Bush, who served two terms as Florida governor before the rise of the group that helped launch the political rise of some of Bush's 2016 rivals.

Members voiced reservations about the former governor's support for Common Core education standards, which some in the group misunderstand to be a federal government mandate. And a handful chanted their opposition as he left the stage.

David White of Ohio was not impressed. "He used his time to try and rearrange perception of his record in Florida," White said.

But some said they were open to supporting Bush, who has only recently begun attending the group's gatherings and was making his first appearance at its annual conference.

"Bush can raise the money to win," said Kelly Gunderson of Minnesota, who opposes Common Core, but was "pleasantly surprised" by Bush. "And I would say I can be with someone who I support 80 percent of the time." (2 images)

overconfidence in efforts to beat President Barack Obama in 2012

Overconfidence in Mittens? What a pile of stupid GOP strategists that meagerly attempt to lead the nation.

Screw 'em, I wouldn't vote GOP come HELL or High Water. I won't vote for their "across the aisle" bastards either.

I never expected fifty-nine precincts in Philly and nine precincts in Cleveland to vote one hundred percent for Øbama.

I thought Romney would do better.

Overconfidence in Mittens?

They are just saying that to keep the Party People in line. They don't even believe it themselves.

The FACTS are they ran to lose in 2008 and 2012 because it was the Dim branch of the ruling party's "turn to win" to keep the pretense of a Two Party system alive.

This year it is the alleged Republicans "turn to win",so that's whats going to happen.

IMHO,by the time that turd, whoever he or she may be,finishes up their second term things will have devolved so far they will quit pretending and just start appointing presidents.

Me,either. The Dim candidate usually gets around 112 percent of the votes in Philly.

In fact,IIRC,they complained about election fraud in Philly because Goober "ONLY" got 100 percent of the vote when he ran against Boy Jorge.

Both the Dems and the GOP continuously fail. That is why there is "trade" amongst themselves for a handoff for new leadership. It is an illusion of change to the masses.

Yup. The only thing they truly fear is the unwashed masses getting wise to their game and marching on DC carrying torches.

The Bush's,Clinton's,Dole's,Gore's,Kennedy's,etc, etc, etc are nothing more than the public face on display. Yeah, they get a cut of the wealth for the roles they play, but the real masterminds behind the destruction of America are the international bankers with dual or more citizenship that work behind the scenes pulling the strings on the politicians I named.

Why would local voters in well known destitute slum locations around the nation vote for "Mitt" when a direct representative of allah promised "hope" & "change"? Of course, within this election cycle, as a nation, we have a new political magnet of "hope" & "change" don't we? Another total phuck-up is upon us.

I don't know.

But the statistical minimum was something like four and half percent.

At least, that was the claim of the pundits when a parish in La went for Romney ninety-seven percent to three percent or thereabouts. Then it was racism or voter intimidation or fraudulent vote counting.

Needless to say, they changed their tune wen Philly and Cleveland votes were counted and the original stories went down the memory hole.

He has no history as a venture capitalist. Because of his family name he was able to attract a crowd of people with money to establish Bain Capital. He masterminded a scheme to by stock in companies and take control of their boards of directors. Then he charged them them for the cost of the stock they purchased to take control of of the companies. After that Bain put their own people in as CEOs who knew or caren nothing about the companies at exhorbitant and ruinous salaries. Some of thes companies had been profitable operations for close to 100 years. He drove 22% of them into bankruptcy, most of the rest were left with a struggle to survive while Bain ran off with their assets and Romney pocketed 300,000,000 dollars then left to enter politics as a venture capitalist.

Romney was a God damned looter. This is your idea of a great man?

So your idea of a venerable venture capitalist is someone who siezes control of successful businesses, steals their assets, and drives them into bankruptcy or near bankruptcy. You have a quaint approach to morality. We don't need you to represent conservative principles.
