Title: California: $15 Minimum Wage, $30 Per Pizza, Massive Fail

Small businesses are already struggling to survive the spate of minimum wage increases to $15 per hour in parts of California.

Last month, the small Bay Area town of Emeryville, California, (population 10,000) decided to act as flag-bearer for raising the minimum wage in California, hiking its minimum wage to $14.44 per hour.

Even though businesses with less than 56 workers are exempt from the $14.44 rate and do not have to raise their wages to $15 until 2018, Vic Gumper, who owns Lanesplitter Pizza, with outlets in Berkeley, Oakland, Albany and Emeryville, decided not only to bite the bullet but swallow it, paying his workers $15 to $25 an hour while eschewing tips or raising prices.

He advertised his $30 pizzas and other food items as “sustainably served, really … no tips necessary,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

Sales at Gumper’s locations have plunged 25% in the last few months; some of the locations now force workers to skip their lunch hours.

Gumper admitted, “The necessity of paying people a living wage in the Bay Area is clear, so it’s hard to argue against it, and it’s something I’m really proud to be able to try doing. At the same time, I’m terrified of going out of business after 18 years.”

Other businesses are experiencing similar strains.

The owners of the business are not the only ones complaining about the wage hikes; one worker for Gumper pointed out that the wage he paid her was less than the money she earned eliciting tips at her former bar job in San Francisco.

Minimum wage hikes are planned all over Northern California. Berkeley plans to raise its wage to $19 by 2020.

In 2014, the California chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) estimated that the state’s 2013 legislation raising California’s minimum wage rate to $9 per hour in 2014 and $10 by 2016 would shrink the state’s economy by $5.7 billion in the next 10 years and would cost the state roughly 68,000 jobs–63% of which would come from small businesses. I sympathisize with the small business owners in this growing socialist environment. They will have to be very clever to operate their busineses in the future; it will probably mean more "under the table" pay besides cheaper ingredients which leads to poor quality products.

For pizza pies, I don't understand why anyone buys a fast food pizza, anyway. For years, I just go out to the freezer and pull one of those yummy store bought pizzas out and stuff it into the microwave oven for the recommended settings.

YUMMY! Plus, I add my own grated parmesan cheese, olives and hot chile. My approach saves tons of money while not having to deal with little snot nosed bastards.

I haven't used that exact term, but his obsession with calling Californians silly names certainly makes the grandiose one look like a dull oaf.

Dems say that it will work when congress and Obama force ALL pizza places in the US to charge $30.

"one worker for Gumper pointed out that the wage he paid her was less than the money she earned eliciting tips at her former bar job in San Francisco."

And I bet she no longer gets free pizza for her lunch or dinner breaks.

"Dems say that it will work when congress and Obama force ALL pizza places in the US to charge $30."

Well, of course. How are they supposed to compete and make a profit?

But now everyone is complaining that food cost so much they need to make $40 an hour.

So would raising the minimum wage to $40 per hour instead fix it?

Yes it would ... until the price of pizza was raised to $50. Then the employees would demand $60 an hour in order to afford to eat.

I think you can see where this is heading. Liberals don't.

Sounds like $60 is the magic number :)

Baltimore has a Living wage law mandating ~ $12 an hour, more than Maryland's $8.25 minimum wage.. Yet liberal blacks blame crime in Baltimore of lack of jobs for the black residents. Their solution ?? Tax payer $$ of course.

Cornell West was on Kelly file Monday night blaming the crime in Baltimore on a lack of a living wage there, when it has that $12 Living Wage law

They make one pizza an hour?

No wonder government has to provide assistance to workers so pizza is still being made.

Yes, you are a noble schnook for killing your business over SF's high cost of living. May the Force be with you.

"blaming the crime in Baltimore on a lack of a living wage"

Back in the day a "living wage" was made by working two or three jobs if those were the only types of jobs you qualified for. We would never have demanded one employer to meet our financial needs.

And who says $12 an hour is a living wage? That $24k per year, and that's the Federal Poverty Level for a family of four.
