The retired neurosurgeon said his research, which took place in 1992, does not conflict with his call to defund Planned Parenthood after several undercover videos surfaced that purportedly show officials with the organization working with research companies using tissue from aborted fetuses. Jen Gunter, an obstetrician-gynecologist, wrote on her blog that Carson had co-authored an academic paper published in Hum Pathol, in which he described working with material "from two fetuses aborted in the ninth and 17th week of gestation." In her blog post, Gunter sharply criticized the GOP presidential candidate. "As a neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson knows full well that fetal tissue is essential for medical research," wrote Gunter, author of "The Preemie Primer," a guide for parents of premature babies. "His discipline would have a hard time being where it is today without that kind of work. What is even more egregious than dismissing the multitude of researchers whose work allowed him to become a neurosurgeon is the hypocrisy of actually having done that research himself while spouting off about its supposed worthlessness." Gunter wrote that fetal tissue research has recently helped develop a vaccine against Ebola and is currently being used to develop treatments for blindness, HIV and other illnesses. To: redleghunter (#1) I didn't quote the entire article. There is a video at the source that I didn't watch. If he worked on fetal tissue that was from a miscarriage. That wouldn't be unethical in my view. But doing research on murdered children to try to help other people. To me that is murdering to steal their parts. I see that as pure evil. Someone asked me on Christian forums that would I accept an aborted fetal organ for transplant for my infant. I first informed them that PP is not doing that. They can't. That would require them to keep the baby alive long enough to properly harvest the organ. My answer was that if I had a 2 yr old who required a transplant and the organ available was harvested unwilling from another child I would refuse the transplant. Or they might overlook it, seeing him as a leader who can really carry the pro-life torch for them in the coming campaign. If what he said is true then I was obviously wrong. I still don't like his second amendment stance though. I wanted to use our time tonight to directly deal with an attack launched on me today by the left and the media. A couple questions came in on this subject, so I want to address it head on. Today I was accused by the press as having done research on fetal tissue. It simply is not true. The study they distributed by an anonymous source was done in 1992. The study was about tumors. I won’t bore you with the science. There were four doctors' names on the study. One was mine. I spent my life studying brain tumors and removing them. My only involvement in this study was supplying tumors that I had removed from my patients. Those tissue samples were compared to other tissue samples under a microscope. Pathologists do this work to gain clues about tumors. I, nor any of the doctors involved with this study, had anything to do with abortion or what Planned Parenthood has been doing. Research hospitals across the country have microscope slides of all kinds of tissue to compare and contrast. The fetal tissue that was viewed in this study by others was not collected for this study. I am sickened by the attack that I, after having spent my entire life caring for children, had something to do with aborting a child and harvesting organs. My medical specialty is the human brain and even I am amazed at what it is capable of doing. Please know these attacks are pathetic attempts to blunt our progress. I've read some of this tissue is collected as a result of removing an ectopic pregnancy that would otherwise kill the mother and cannot result in a live birth. Then there are cell tissue lines that have been around for about 30 years now. They are famous and used in huge numbers of studies. There is one particularly famous culture of a black male fetus going back to the Eighties. Never born but there are probably semi loads of his cells floating around in most every bio lab in the country. Overseas too. They prize the stability of his cell line and like to test drugs on him so they can match them up side-by-side. I've never heard anyone suggest it before but it has occurred to me that the pro-lifers could play a very clever trick. If they obtain his cell line and created a clone of him and allowed him to be born, then he would be a living person and then he (or a guardian) could challenge the use of his own tissue in all these labs.
