Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and Rand Paul are in. Donald Trump is out.
A total of 14 candidates will participate in the Voters First Republican Presidential Forum on Monday, Aug. 3, at St. Anselm College. The two-hour forum, intended to highlight the importance of the first-in-the-nation primary, along with the Iowa caucuses and South Carolina’s early primary.
“I am in the North Country today,” Bush said Thursday, “meeting with voters about my message of reforming the culture in Washington. I’m looking forward to participating in the August 3rd forum. It’s clear it is a great opportunity to engage with Granite Staters about the important issues confronting the nation.”
Spokesmen for Paul and Walker said they are looking forward to the event.
The forum came into being after Fox News was heavily criticized for limiting the first sanctioned TV debate to 10 candidates based solely on national polling. Republicans in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina all wrote letters protesting the polling criteria, but Fox hasn’t budged. However, it has moved up to a 5 p.m. start a second forum for lower-polling candidates. It is unclear how many will attend. The Fox events are in Cleveland, but that state’s governor, John Kasich, may not make the top tier for the primetime debate.
The Voters First Forum is being co-sponsored by the New Hampshire Union Leader, the Charleston, S.C., Post and Courier, and the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gazette. Broadcast co-sponsors are iHeart radio, KCRG-TV, Cedar Rapids; and WLTX-TV in Columbia, S.C. The forum will be broadcast nationally by C-SPAN. New England viewers will be able to watch on NECN. It will be broadcast locally by NH1/WBIN-TV in New Hampshire, as well as by the South Carolina and Iowa stations. It will also air live on NHPR.
Candidate Trump bowed out because, an aide said, he was upset with a Union Leader editorial this week that mocked him for saying that U.S. Sen. John McCain was not a war hero. McCain, shot down by the North Vietnamese, suffered years of torture after refusing to be released early because his father was an admiral.
Joining Bush, Walker, Paul and Sen. Rubio will be Carly Fiorina, Govs. Bobby Jindal, John Kasich and Chris Christie, former Govs. Rick Perry and George Pataki; U.S. Sens. Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, and Dr. Ben Carson.
Unlike the Fox polling bar, criteria for inclusion in the Voters First Forum are much broader and include active campaign operations with paid staff and local offices in the early states.
“Fox has said it will serve as the first primary and ‘winnow’ the field on Aug. 6,” Union Leader Publisher Joseph W. McQuaid said Thursday. “We and our partners think the voters of our states should continue to play that role. Our forum will give voters a chance to see the larger field of candidates and will give the voters a chance to have their issues addressed.”
Rubio senior adviser Jim Merrill said Thursday that Rubio is “committed to New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary ... The event promises to be one of the signature events of the year, providing Granite State voters a unique opportunity to take measure of our entire GOP field, in keeping with our primary traditions.”
WGIR “New Hampshire Today” host Jack Heath will moderate the forum. Voters can go to www.UnionLeader.com/VotersFirst to suggest issues for the candidates. The Live Free or Die Alliance is also soliciting issue ideas on its website.

I don't blame him. With 10 people there it will become a beauty and babbling contest with neither Trump, or anybody else, able to get a word in edgewise. He's much better of to present cricisms at a later date. He's been carrying on a debate for weeks and his opponents have been able to do nothing in their frustration but call him names. Why should he confront a crowd of goofs who can do nothing but cluster together and call him more names while labeling themselves brilliant?
He can tweet and get a bigger audience. He can go have an event and it will be broadcast in more places then the debate. He could also be studying them so when they have the first debate that has a big audience he will have an advantage. He will not lose one vote because of his decision. If he went you would be complaining about something else.

Seems like he's eager to drop out, and any excuse will do. OTOH, this would be in keeping with declaring a GOP candidacy (as Pat Buchanan did in 1999), gathering up a bunch of followers, then leaving the GOP primary to run as an indy candidate. Another Perot. What, does Trump think no newspaper will ever write bad things about him? Of course they will. This seems like a totally phony excuse. Or he is ashamed to be confronted with his own remarks about McStain with that newspaper's staff asking the questions.

New Santorum attack ad against Rand Paul and Mike Huckabee. He's going for Trump's VP, third party? I think he will go full Perot, probably in a month or so. First you said he wasn't running for President. Then you sid he wasn't going to file his financials. Then you said the true comments on illegals would destroy him. Then you said he wouldn't get in the debates because his poll numbers weren't good enough. Then you said he would be out by the third debate. Then you said he would never be in first place in the polls. Then you said he wouldn't file with the FEC. Then you said he worked for Bush. Then you said he worked for Hillary. Now you're saying he will go third party. I've been saying all along that you are full of it and don't have political insight. What is your prediction for next week?
