Report: Israel treating al-Qaida fighters wounded in Syria civil war

Israel has opened its borders with Syria in order to provide medical treatment to Nusra Front and al-Qaida fighters wounded in the ongoing civil war, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The prominent American newspaper reported that Nusra Front, the Sunni Muslim al-Qaida offshoot which is currently fighting the Iranian-backed axis of Bashar Assad and Hezbollah, "hasn't bothered Israel since seizing the border area last summer" along the Golan Heights.

While Israel views al-Qaida and its allies as enemies, it is far more disturbed by what it views as an even bigger menace – Iran and its proxies. According to The Wall Street Journal, this attitude has caused tension with the United States, which has also targeted al-Qaida and Nusra Front fighters in Syria.

Even Assad's defeat by al Qaeda-aligned rebels would be preferable to Damascus's current alliance with Israel's arch-foe Iran, Ambassador Michael Oren said in an interview with the Jerusalem Post.

His comments marked a move in Israel's public position on Syria's two-and-1/2-year-old war.

So Israel is providing medical aid for the Obama backed AQ in Syria. Interesting.

Who has a scorecard? It's hard to keep up with the players.

I'm sure there are many things happening behind the scenes.

So God is on al-Qaeda's side because they are allied with Israel now?

You might want to ask God about that. Are they really on Israel's side? Really?

Israel is on Al-Qaeda's side and is backing them against Assad.

Michael Oren hasn't been ambassador since 2013, a fact the writer somehow missed in his in-depth reporting. He's now a member of Knesset for the minor Kulani party, a Likud-light party that Bibi defeated decisively in the last election.

This detail is not very relevant.

If the Arab spring proved one thing it is the following:

Remove a dictator who keeps order and the alternative is chaos.

Regardless of American politics that is a reality.

Unlike other regions which have various "floors" of developed opposition groups, the Arab ME has the top floor (secular dictator) and the basement floor (radical Islam). There are no "floors" between the two.

I left out Iran because they are not Arab and have at least one middle floor. Plus their "top floor" was deposed in the late 70s and the bottom floor rules right now. There's still hope for Iran.

So JPost is so pathetic that it can't find and report the story itself but has to rely on a foreign financial paper, the WSJ, as its apparent source for the entire story?

The Bush Doctrine was an attempt to change that dynamic by introducing a 3rd way. In retrospect ,it may have been a quixotic attempt .But I think they saw it as our exit out of the region, without the surrender with our tails between our legs policy of the emperor .

General Odierno believed a force of 30-35,000 US troops would've prevented the birth of IS .

Alliances of convenience make strange bed-fellow. We allied with the Soviet Union for a hand full of years when we had a common interest ;and then stood toe to toe with them for 40 years .

Probably the Israeli press was restrained to reveal their nation is covertly helping al-Qaeda in Syria. Your statement does not do anything to expunge Israel of this fact.

No. The Bush Doctrine was the cover reason the Bush Adimn gave for invading Iraq when all else fails. The Bush admin had no real plan to bring democracy and democratic values to the Middle East - it was just a slogan - an excuse to shut up American critics.

But once this excuse is used you have to go through the motions of pretending to bring democracy so you have an election way before it is prudent to do so.

The USSR - while a bad empire - was not killing Americans at that time - the USA even had peaceful trading relations with Stalin's USA - people forget that. Italy had to overthrow Musolini before we allowed them to become allies against Germany.

Possible. However, Maliki had a huge hand in the formation of ISIS. If he kept a fraction of the promises made in the Fall 2007 truce with the Anbari Sunni leaders, there would not be a 'pool' of unemployed youth to join ISIS.

Then again, the US (Obolo) establishing a hard pull out date of USFOR helped accelerate the rise of ISIS.

Maybe elections came too early ,or maybe not soon enough . Either way ,the real problem was the attempt to rebuild beforce pacification.

This is true . Roosevelt and Stalin had a similar political philosophy .

The Maliki government needed a strong horse to help them ;and since we were no longer going to be there to support or direct (and the emperor made that clear before he was elected ) ,Maliki turned to Iran for support . The end result of that was that the Sunni areas were cut out of the political process ,and that I believe led to the rise of IS
