Turns out that the things that make old people crazy on Fox News -- welfare recipients have cable TV and buy fancy clothes [and Obama-phones (TFB)]! -- are far cheaper than they used to be, and therefore are rational decisions for the poor. The problem is that the truly important investments of life -- health, education, nutrition -- have become more expensive."

Education, food, drink, child care, health care and vehicle maintenance are essential. TVs, cellphones, computers and toys are not.
There is no inflation - the Emperor has decreed it so. So Let It Be. Any rumors to the contrary are just examples of racism by Fox News, Right Wing Talk Radio, or republicans.
I believe you summed up the intent of the article succinctly. This nation has a "priorities crisis", the only type of crisis that the President will surely let go to waste. I also believe that the essentials are not going to be a target of looting during riots, yet besides the rare picture of someone stealing toilet paper before torching a CSV, they will most likely go for the TVs and malt liquor... By the way, if anyone completes that last sentence and criticizes me for it, they would be a racist.
