August will mark ten years since somebody stole a pair of the ruby slippers that Dorothy clicked together three times to get home to Kansas in The Wizard of Oz from The Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Now an anonymous benefactor has stepped forward and offered a million dollar reward to anyone with credible information about the theft, including the exact location of the slippers and the perpetrator’s name. The slippers, designed for the 1939 film by legendary Hollywood costumer Adrian, were stolen from the museum, located in Garland’s hometown, in 2005 and haven't been seen since. John Kelsch, executive director of the museum told the Associated Press that the bounty’s donor is from Arizona and is a huge fan of Garland and the 1939 movie. At the time of the theft, the ruby slippers, which owe their glitter to burgundy sequins, were insured for $1 million. Kelsch says they could be worth $2 million to $3 million now. The last pair to hit the auction block took in $666,000 in 2000. In L. Frank Baum’s Oz books, on which the film was based, Dorothy's magical shoes were silver, but according to the Smithsonian, screenwriter Noel Langley changed them to ruby red—possibly so they would stand out better against a yellow brick road. After the film was made, the ruby slippers were stored in MGM’s wardrobe department and more or less forgotten. In 1970 a pair was discovered in MGM’s basement and sold at auction for $15,000 to a still-anonymous buyer, who donated them to the Smithsonian, where they are still on display. Another pair was acquired in 2012 for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences' planned museum. Two other pairs, including the stolen set, are known to exist.
