www.cnet.com/news/sling-t...rything-you-need-to-know/

Anybody else at LF trying this streaming tv service? 1st week is free, and after that it is 20 bucks a month and you get AMC and TNT,among other stations.

HBO is another $15 per month.

There are also free movies for your basic monthy subscription,as well as pay movies.

My Direct TV account was 70 bucks per month, but is creeping back up to a little over 100 bucks a month again,so I am looking for options.

I subscribed and hook up to it using my ROKU player, but you can also do both on your PC,or even on your smart phone.

Click for Full Text!

Poster Comment:

Just subscribed a couple hours ago,and have mixed feelings about it. A lot of the programs I would watch on it can also be watched on my Netflix and my Amazon Prime account for free, but not all. RIght now I have am/have been watching the History Channel on it,and the History Channel is also available on Netflix. Haven't checked to see if the programming is identical yet, though.

Frankly,AMC and TNT are big draws for me and why I am looking into it.

So far MY opinion is that it works as advertised, but there are a couple of negatives. The 2 big negatives is I don't see any way to record programs there yet,and the programming is hard to figure out. Frankly,I am spoiled by my Dish Network and Direct TV DVR's and their ability to check upcoming shows and record them instantly as well as VOD shows. Trying to find and view a program in episode order is at best "clunky" for me.

I may just decide at the end of the 7 days that it's worth another 80 bucks a month to have the convenience of recording and an excellent search engine from Dish or Direct. My time may not be worth much dollar wise, but it is worth something to me and I would rather spend it watching shows than trying to find them and remember when they come on.

What say yee?

BTW,WTH are "peers" and "trackers"?

"peers" are other folks, like yourself, who have aready downloaded the file that you're downloading. So when you download a file using a torrent, your not dowloading from just one computer, but you're downloading bits & pieces of it from different "peers." "Trackers" are the computers that keep track of where the different peers are. After you download, they're keeping track of YOU, and as a peer, YOU will be contibuting bits & pieces of the file you download to other people who want to download it. This happens in the background and you don't even see it happening.

A minor correction. Peers only have part of the file. Seeds have it all.

Actually. You are always sending out part of the file. Even before you are finished downloading. The more people that are downloading the faster it is. The opposite of downloading from a single site.

Actually, peers can have only part or the whole file.

You are always sending out part of the file. Even before you are finished downloading.

Often, not always. More true on big public torrent sites like PirateBay or KA, etc.

I am also on some private torrent sites where I almost never upload anything (or just upload a few MBs on a big torrent). On sites like that, you have to worry about keeping your download ratio in order. On some sites, they enforce that strictly, on some others they scold you a little but never kick you out for a low ratio.

You can upload any part of the file(s) as a peer as soon as you get even one valid file block.

A seeder has 100% of the file and is ready to upload it, whether anyone is actually downloading from them or not.

Took around 8 hours to download a 12 episode season both times.

That's not bad.

Flash drives are starting to be cheap enough to store old TV shows on. Or you can burn DVDs if you want to save up these shows. Or just store them on a 1TB backup drive.

Most TV shows come in 350MB versions. You could store 350 42-minute 350MB standard resolution TV shows on a $50 1TB USB3 drive, for instance. If you want HD shows at 720p, it takes more.

For what you guys are after, maybe TorrenTv would make sense. It's like a specialized upgraded Popcorn Time. It also has instant torrent streaming (like Netflix) and it is built for viewing torrents on your TV in the quickest and easiest way possible.

TorrentFreak: TorrenTV Instantly Streams Movie Torrents to Apple TV

BGR: Pirate paradise: New app streams movie torrents to Apple TV and Roku

http://torrentv.github.io/

I haven't tried it yet though. It's still in beta and the author is taking $1 donations. It started streaming only to AppleTV devices but they've added Roku (a special Roku channel) and Chromecast support. I know it has gotten good reviews from many websites and it is open-source.

Maybe not the current year, but earlier seasons are out there all over the place for people to view.

You just can't watch this seasons shows without paying until the next season is playing.

I almost never save tv shows or movies anymore. I watch them and then delete them. Anytime I want to watch them again they are always out there somewhere to be found and viewed.

I do have a 1TB as well as a 2TB and a smaller portable HDd'S,though. Mostly because I record stuff and then wait until I have the time to watch them. I also record a lot of stuff on my Channel Master for later viewing, and you pretty much have to have a portable HDD if you use one of them because they don't have squat for file storage.

My question is, piratebay is telling me I have to download their HD player first.

ThePirateBay is a website only. It shows up looking like the Google start page.

If you are getting an app that calls itself PirateBay, it is from scammers. Don't install it!

The real website: https://thepiratebay.mn/

You get the torrent files from PB or another site like KickAssTorrentz. To use the torrent file to download videos (or other files), you need a Torrent client program.

You can try downloading the files with uTorrent, the easiest and most popular of modern torrent client downloaders.

I just downloaded Bit Comet last night with their video player program (MPC Star) and their audio player (Comet Player),and am very happy with them.

Guys,in case you don't know,HULU just added Show Time as a premium addition for $8.99 per month.

I suspect Netflix (that already has Showtime as a extra cost option) will soon be matching that price.

I just downloaded Bit Comet last night with their video player program (MPC Star) and their audio player (Comet Player),and am very happy with them.

BitComet is compatible is Magnet/eMule links/downloads (eMule is an older BitTorrent-like protocol you will likely never use). It can also handle large HTTP and FTP downloads (which you are also very unlikely to use).

There is no reason to use their crapware BitComet AV player. Just use VLC like everyone else does.

Put bluntly, there is no reason for a new user to pick up BitComet. It is a legacy client. Much like the Opera web browser, the only people using it are the diehards that have used it for years. Everyone else has long since moved on to better torrent clients. Like uTorrent. There is no reason for a new torrent user like you to pick up BitComet. I assume you just liked the name or something.

If you want integrated media player, transcoding, uPNP/DLNA for LAN streaming, you should get Vuze/Azureus. But Vuze is written in Java, a security problem. I gave up Vuze after being loyal to it for years because I couldn't keep using something that had constant security issues. uTorrent has relatively few features but it does the basics well.

You would be better off to use VLC or Plex or XBMC as your player than to get tied to BitComet just because they offer a crapware AV player (based on mplayer source code). Or you could try the new TorrenTV combo torrent/streamer I mentioned above (based on the open-source PopcornTime software). As a side note, all of these (VLC/Plex/XBMC/PopcornTime/TorrenTV) and many others are based on the same old open-source mplayer software. VLC is the best-tested and most widely used of the whole bunch.

Showtime is kinda crappy IMO. HBO is almost as lame but it is available for streaming too.

By the time you grab a Showtime for $9 and Netflix for $9 and Hulu for $9 and Sling for $20, you might as well just subscribe to satellite or cable and get an integrated package that works much better.

It is the client with the greatest number of features and plugins. Nothing else compares. It is a Swiss Army knife of a torrent client.

The only reason it sucks is that it is written in Java and is somewhat CPU-intensive.

I mention it because it does have the integrated player and a lot of other desired features found in PopcornTime and other players. And it offers many streaming/transcoding features for phones/tablets that you can't get from other torrent clients.

One of our favorite BitTorrent clients, uTorrent, recently came under fire over complaints that an updated build silently installed a cryptocurrencly miner called EpicScale. Several uTorrent users took to the Internet to voice their displeasure over the situation, though it turns out there was plenty of blame to go around. On the user side, those affected by the mining software failed to read the fine print and gave EpicScale the green light to install. As for uTorrent, it could have done a better job letting users know what they were getting into, as the bundled software looked a lot like a Tos/EULA box.

It is more CPU-bound, as I said before. So it doesn't run well on underpowered rigs.

It never bothered my quad-core Xeon Mac Pro. I stopped using it over security issues as my newer Mac Mini is an i7 quad-core which has no problem with it. I just don't trust anything written in Java any more. And Vuze was the only Java util that I used regularly.

Bitcomet also disabled the ration thingy that will slow you down if you don't share enough.

The ratio enforcement is ultimately up to the torrent sites and the tracker, not any torrent client that you are running on your machine.

Over the years, various clients have found ways to slam the tracker's stats and fool it into thinking you're a primo sharer instead of a leeching scumbag. The tracker programmers always catch on to this and close these holes rather quickly. Only rubes get taken in by such a pitch. The major trackers are extremely sophisticated and very hard to fool for long.

Frankly, I don't torrent much on public sites like TPB or KA. The quality of the vids is amateurish or just mediocre, higher chance of MPAA types getting your IP address. I like private members-only torrent sites much more and use them for 95% of my torrenting.

See the above. They seem like good reasons to me.

The only reason I can see now for keeping a sat dish is for convenience. One stop viewing and recording means I don't have to keep a track of what shows are on what nights, and not recording them on 3 different systems.

Back when I was getting everything I wanted on the sat dish,I was paying damn near 200 bucks a month.

Not really. I get HBO,but other than that I get no premium channels, and it's costing ,it's costing me a little more than 100 bucks per month to be able to pull in over 100 channels I have no interest in. Right off the bat I save 70 bucks a month by dropping the sat dish.

I have a Channel Master reciever/recorder and a HD antenna, and pull in 39 local channels with the antenna, and between Netflix and Hulu I am now pretty much covered.

Truth to tell,I am thinking about dropping Hulu and just keeping Netflix.

I also get a lot of free stuff from Amazon because I am a prime member. I'm not counting what I pay for my internet connection because I would be paying that anyhow.

I thought you were getting ready for Sling ($20/month) and Showtime (streaming, $8/month).

Anyway, it's not difficult to see that the media conglomerates don't intend there to be many real and lasting discounts for subscribing to their current content via streaming.

Netflix/Hulu remain quite viable but only if you don't demand access to all the current shows and are willing to wait a few months or a year to see the latest season of episodes from a cable TV show.

Nope. Just showtime for $8.99,plus the $7.99 Hulu already charges.

I may even wait to see what happens with the showtime link on Netflix so I can just drop Hulu. Right now you have to already have a cable, internet, or sat dish Showtime contract to use the page on Netflix.

Therefore, the pirate administrators have started blocking Windows 10 users from accessing the BitTorrent trackers that the sites host. The first ones to hit the alarm button were iTS, which have posted a statement and started redirecting Windows 10 users to a YouTube video called Windows 10 is a Tool to Spy on Everything You Do. Additionally, according to TorrentFreak, two other similar dark web torrent trackers are also considering following suit. "As we all know, Microsoft recently released Windows 10. You as a member should know, that we as a site are thinking about banning the OS from FSC," said one of the FSC staff. Likewise, in a message to their users, a BB admin said something similar: "We have also found [Windows 10] will be gathering information on users' P2P use to be shared with anti piracy group."

I had to laugh today at this one. Win10 is spying on us! I would LOL at this but it's probably true.

I'm probably paranoid, but I have always assumed damn near every bit of software we download is spying on us in one way or another.

It's just like talking on the phone. NEVER say anything over the phone that you wouldn't willingly say out loud in front of strangers.
