Above is the link to the homepage of sling tv,and below is a review by CNET magazine.

www.cnet.com/news/sling-t...rything-you-need-to-know/

Anybody else at LF trying this streaming tv service? 1st week is free, and after that it is 20 bucks a month and you get AMC and TNT,among other stations.

HBO is another $15 per month.

There are also free movies for your basic monthy subscription,as well as pay movies.

My Direct TV account was 70 bucks per month, but is creeping back up to a little over 100 bucks a month again,so I am looking for options.

I subscribed and hook up to it using my ROKU player, but you can also do both on your PC,or even on your smart phone.

Poster Comment:

Just subscribed a couple hours ago,and have mixed feelings about it. A lot of the programs I would watch on it can also be watched on my Netflix and my Amazon Prime account for free, but not all. RIght now I have am/have been watching the History Channel on it,and the History Channel is also available on Netflix. Haven't checked to see if the programming is identical yet, though.

Frankly,AMC and TNT are big draws for me and why I am looking into it.

So far MY opinion is that it works as advertised, but there are a couple of negatives. The 2 big negatives is I don't see any way to record programs there yet,and the programming is hard to figure out. Frankly,I am spoiled by my Dish Network and Direct TV DVR's and their ability to check upcoming shows and record them instantly as well as VOD shows. Trying to find and view a program in episode order is at best "clunky" for me.

I may just decide at the end of the 7 days that it's worth another 80 bucks a month to have the convenience of recording and an excellent search engine from Dish or Direct. My time may not be worth much dollar wise, but it is worth something to me and I would rather spend it watching shows than trying to find them and remember when they come on.

What say yee?

Seems to me like you're wandering back into sat subscription. You may as well just do it. I don't see that the TNT/AMC combo with CNN and a few others is an especially good value. AFAIK, you can get the ultra-cheapo package on Directv or Dish for only a little more with higher reliability.

I saw something today at Ars Technica, an article on the best of the WiFi range extenders. Ars is a huge techie site if you aren't aware of it.

ArsTechnica: From the Wirecutter: The best consumer-grade Wi-Fi extender

The winner is this Netgear, currently showing at $120 but you can look around and find it for $100.

Amazon: NETGEAR AC1200 High Power 700mW Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender - Desktop with 5 Ports (EX6200)

It's dual-band, supports wireless printers, has a built-in DLNA media server if you plug in a USB hard drive with a bunch of movies (compatible with all your TV boxes like Roku and with computers and smartphones and tablets).

My thinking is you could try one of these Netgear range extenders. Put in in front of a window that faces your outlying metal shed. This Netgear has different modes for 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz so you can set it only to rebroadcast 2.4 or 5 or a combo. So you might choose 2.4GHz for the house but use the 5GHz band to transmit to your shop. (Naturally, you have to have 5GHz-capable networking for this, check your Roku 'cause it might be 2.4Ghz-only).

Anyway, if you could use one of these to boost your shop WiFi to work, it would still probably be cheaper than hiring someone to dig a trench for you to bury some cable. And if it didn't work, pack it up and send it back to Amazon for a refund. And it should work at that price and over that range because that is a very pricey WiFi booster. A pricey Wifi booster had better deliver what it promises or it should be returned to the retailer.

Amazon's top reviews provide some experience with using it to cover a entire backyard well enough for 1080p streaming without buffering.

Not really. While it shows a lot of promise and may be the future,it ain't there yet. From what I have seen so far,it's not worth 2 dollars a month and I will cancel before my free 7 day trial is out.

Primarily because I can get the same content from Netflix cheaper, and the service is MUCH better.

No,I can't record the streaming video from Netflix either, but I don't have to because it is there for me to view anytime I want. On Sling I have to pick a viewing time and remember to go there while it's playing. Plus there is no memory. If I stop a play to answer the telephone,I have to go back to the start of the program again.

Plus I have already had instances twice of the streaming video dying, and had to start viewing at the start of the show once I got it to start loading again.

Maybe I am wrong on some of this and just don't understand the Sling format yet,but I have another 5 days to try.

I definitely need to check out other avenues for betting AMC,TLC,Sundance, etc before I make the final decision, but it's not looking good for Sling so far. I am sure it will be a much better service a year from now than it is now because streaming video IS the future of tv and movie viewing, and the Big Sat company that owns Sling no doubt sees the end of their almost monopoly coming up soon. They have the bucks to invest to make it better, and and they have a reason to do just that. Big Sat is dead, and just waiting around to be buried.

Thanks, but I already have 200 feet of ethernet cable, all the ends and crimper bought and paid for as well as the plastic tubing and connection boxes, and I can get the trench dug for less than 100 bucks to bury it and not have to worry about ever buying anything else.

Plus,I like the idea of a dedicated connection that I KNOW will work and can bury and forget that can't be pulled off the air by anyone passing by.

My thinking is you could try one of these Netgear range extenders. Put in in front of a window that faces your outlying metal shed.

I have no windows facing my "metal shed",which is actually a 35x50 metal building with a 18 foot ceiling and 14x14 insulated commercial garage doors at each end.

I do appreciate being show an option, though. I would almost certainly have given that a shot if I hadn't already bought everything necessary for a buried dedicated connection. Thank you!

Netflix changes their movies all the time.

Also you can record Netflix. I read about it somewhere a while back

I never doubted there was some way to do that. I was only certain that I didn't know how to do it.

IMHO,for a commercial service to be successful, stuff like being able to record their shows should be so simple to do that anyone who casually streams video should just be able to click on a button and do it. If they make it hard to do or so complicated that only a techie can figure it out, they are going to fail.

Thanks. You have used both of those services and have never had a Trojan worm it's way into your system? The app you have to download doesn't have any hidden secrets?

BTW,what is the difference between those two sites? They look identical to me.

They pre check the stuff on the site before you see it.

I also have some links on my other computer I will share with you.

here is one that comes to mind.

Lime torrents. They also pre screen for viruses.

I really like the pirate bays top 100 list.

If you like them quick to downoad you should get downloads from yiffy. HD short files.

You should look at PirateBay and KickassTorrents as primary torrent sites.

Outfits like Limewire are kinda dicey, just like Kazaa and Shareaza used to be. And like Kazaa/Shareaza, lots of bogus malware-filled downloads in their software offerings.

While I don't recommend Vuze/Azureus because it is written in Java (a security threat), I do like uTorrent. For $5 a year, it lets you stream torrents as you download them. The free version forces you to wait for the download to complete before you play it. A client that takes a miniscule 1MB of RAM and is mostly written in assembler, it will run on even very old and outdated computers easily.

With the streaming option, uTorrent makes every torrent site into a big Netflix for you. It supports RSS feeds so it will automatically download lists of new torrents for you, very handy for big sites like the ones I mentioned. KickassTorrents does offer easy-to-use RSS feeds for its major torrent categories like movies and TV shows and you can choose specialized RSS feeds, like for HD-movies-only.

Outfits like Kazaa/Shareaza/Limewire have a lot of security holes and problems over the years, lots of downsides. Much of the time, their video feeds are second-rate quality. You're much better off to stay with the best-known torrent clients like uTorrent (or even Vuze) and the main torrent sites like PirateBay and KickAssTorrents.

I just looked up kickass torrents, and they also have a software package you have to download to view their content.

This is the sort of software I am always suspicious of and hesitate to download. What are the chances of it being spyware/malware/trojan virus?

I wouldn't recommend it. But I don't think they have an official client. Most likely, that is a malware installer. Provide me a link and I'll check into it. Lots and lots of malware gets distributed through such bogus programs.

Everyone I knows looks at Kickass via web browsers or the RSS reader in Vuze or uTorrent or in a standard RSS newsfeed reader.

Here is a link to just KA's Highres - Movies, RSS feed. It has just the movie titles and the name of the torrent file to use to download it. So if you subscribed to Highres-Movies in uTorrent, you'd get a list like this, auto-updated every 5-10 minutes with all the latest Highres Movies from KA. You could read the RSS feed(s) and just click the ones you want to download. No browser, no special downloader for the torrent site like you have on some of these proprietary torrent sites. Just uTorrent and the RSS feed.

The uTorrent (with $5 streaming option) and the RSS feature is all you'd really need to grab as much stuff as you like conveniently off KickassTorrents and use it like a roll-yer-own Netflix. If you don't care about instant streaming, you can use uTorrent Free.

Speaking of YIFY, I noticed this little gem on KA but it can't be very high quality at only 1GB for 169 minutes:

I decided to grab it. So it is downloading at 400-500kB/s and will finish in under 40 minutes. Plenty fast for immediate streaming. So I have to wait 40 minutes to watch, using uTorrent Free. If I paid the $5 a year for uTorrent Pro, I could start streaming it immediately, like Netflix would.

Ok,I just checked on the latest kickass torrent URL I bookmarked, and it doesn't require the download file, but when I clicked on the True Detective tv show link to download there was no app required to download.

I did just notice that my ZA software had stopped and treated a virus titled "?q=5nZH7" from "a.webboxwebs.info" info, but that could have came from one of the earlier URL's I used that took me to a spoof site.

I just closed that window, loaded the .cr kickass torrent in my saved bookmarks again, clicked on tv,went to the same True Detective link again that has the crown again, and the instant I hit the "download" button Zone Alarm hit me with the same virus alert again.

To be real clear, here are the URL's listed in order so you can check them in order and see what you come up with.

https://kat.cr/new/

https://kat.cr/tv/

https://kat.cr/true-detective-s02e02-hdtv-x264-asap-ettv-t10861177.html

http://e.netheral.com/bfff/?q=Tr...%20HDTV%20x264-ASAP[ettv]

And once again ZA gave me the same virus hit.

BTW,I have no idea why only one URL became a hot link. I tried multiple times to make them all hot links with no success.

The S in https:// on LF prevents it from becoming a hot link. I recently learned this at another Pinguinite site. I think if you remove the S it will be hot linked and work.

I'm certain that there is a programming reason for this which is beyond me.
