Putin vows to save Syria from ‘tragic’ fate of U.S.-supported Iraq

Special to WorldTribune.com

Russian President Vladimir Putin said U.S. President Barack Obama’s strategy to counter Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in Iraq has been “lamentable” and resulted in “tragic” consequences.

“The United States supports Iraq, supports … the army. With two or three strikes ISIL has captured so many arms … (that) now ISIL is armed better than the Iraqi army. And all this is happening with the support of the United States,” Putin said.

And, despite pressure from the U.S., Putin pledged full support for President Bashar Assad’s regime in Syria. The U.S. has supported rebels seeking to oust Assad and trained moderated Syrian opposition groups to fight ISIL.

“Our fear is that Syria could plunge into the same situation as Libya and Iraq,” Putin said. “We don’t want that … in Syria.”

Putin added that Russia would not call on Assad to step down but urged the Syrian leader to work with a “healthy” opposition on political reforms.

“We are ready to work with the president to ensure a path towards political transition so as to … move away from an armed confrontation. But that should not be done with the use of force from the outside,” Putin said.

Shouldn't Obama be making this speech?

It is a failed state, just like Libya or Iraq.

Funny. It sounds exactly like a call for Assad to step down or move in that direction (same thing in practical terms).

Why, when that war criminal Hilary Clinton cackled in pride over the murder of Qaddafi and then the plunge of Libya into Islamist chaos that followed? Obama did seem to not want to get involved in Libya and was dragged into it by the Europeans (they were eying Libyan oil just before the Ukraine fiasco) so he is to blame as much as the French or British.

Far from being a call to support Assad, it sounds like Putin is willing for him to go.

To me, this seems by far the weakest "support" that Putin has given Assad from the beginning of the conflict, when Putin's warships were shadowing our ships as they prepared to bomb Assad over crossing the "red line".

Russia has not given much direct military aid to Assad at all.

In Moscow, Syrian minister says Russia promises aid

By Reuters

By Suleiman Al-Khalidi and Laila Bassam

AMMAN/BEIRUT, June 29 (Reuters) - Syria's foreign minister said in Moscow on Monday Russia had promised to send political, economic and military aid to his country, where the army is coming under some of the heaviest pressure since the start of the civil war.

Insurgent groups have made gains against government forces in northwest, central and southern Syria in the past two months but Damascus has voiced confidence that it can hold on to important territory with the help of its allies.

"I got a promise of aid to Syria - politically, economically and militarily," Walid al-Moualem said at a televised news conference after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. He did not give details.

Putin said earlier on Monday there was no change in Russia's support for the Syrian leadership.

The devil is in the details.

I don't think Russia is going to send a lot of help. Maybe some missiles, bombs and ammo. A few old choppers and jets. Maybe a few technical advisers. No way Vlad sends his Spetsnaz.

Correct - it is indirect but probably important help in places like the UN where the USA would try another Libya intervention vote in the guise of humanitarian assistance also they are helping keep the Assad regime as the UN seat holder. If the USA/France/UK did not have Russia blocking them they probably would have installed a Free Syrian Army ambassador to the UN as the legit representative of Syria.

It is a failed state, just like Libya or Iraq.

They are all artificial states created by the British after the Ottoman Empire fell.

The very best thing to do is leave and let them work out their own borders.

We'll just screw it up.

Talk about screwing it up...

The dimwitted commentators on Fox News keep talking about arming the Kurds.

Look at the map of Kurdish areas in the middle east. Most of "Kurdistan" is not in Iraq -- it's in Turkey, which is a NATO country.

I can't wait to see this fight... KABOOOOOOOM...
