Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker blasted the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage as a “grave mistake” and called for a Constitutional amendment allowing states to define marriage. “As a result of this decision, the only alternative left for the American people is to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reaffirm the ability of the states to continue to define marriage,” he said.
In Florida, neither Jeb Bush nor Marco Rubio support an amendment, despite disagreeing with the court decision.
“Governor Bush does not believe amending the Constitution is the right course,” spokeswoman Kristy Campbell said. “Right now, we should focus on defending religious liberty by protecting those who act on their conscience and appointing judges who understand the limits placed on them by the Constitution.”
Rubio has said he thinks states should decide (by voters, not courts) but he disagrees with an national amendment. His spokeswoman did not add fresh comments today saying his general reaction to today’s landmark decision stands on its own.
“As we look ahead, it must be a priority of the next president to nominate judges and justices committed to applying the Constitution as written and originally understood,” Rubio said. “The next president and all in public office must strive to protect the First Amendment rights of religious institutions and millions of Americans whose faiths hold a traditional view of marriage.”
