Obama: Americans need to shift religious views to accept gay marriage

After the Supreme Court issued its ruling on gay marriage Friday, President Obama gave a speech in which he said Americans need to change their religious views to be accepting of gay marriage, the Daily Caller reported. To that end, he encouraged gay marriage supporters to "help” people overcome their deeply-held religious views.

“I know that Americans of goodwill continue to hold a wide range of views on this issue,” he said. Initially, he exhibited a bit of respect for those who oppose same-sex marriage.

"Opposition in some cases has been based on sincere and deeply held beliefs,” he said. “All of us who welcome today’s news should be mindful of that fact. Recognize different viewpoints. Revere our deep commitment to religious freedom.”

"But today should also give us hope that on the many issues with which we grapple often painfully real change is possible,” he added. The implication was clear: Those who disagree with the idea of gay marriage based, for example, on their religious views, must change to be more like progressives who accept gay marriage.

“Shifts in hearts and minds is possible,” he added. “And those who have come so far on their journey to equality have a responsibility to reach back and help others join them. Because for all our differences, we are one people — stronger together than we could ever be alone.”

"That’s always been our story," he continued. "We are big and vast, and diverse. A nation of people with different backgrounds and beliefs, with different experiences and stories, but bound by our shared ideal that no matter who you are, or what you look like, how you started off, or how and who you love — America’s a place where you can write your own destiny.”

A post at the conservative blog Chicks on the Right posted it's translation of Obama's comments. "All you crazy religious people who believe in traditional marriage need to change your beliefs!" the blog said. "They're holding you back from joining up with the rest of us super-smart people who aren't burdened by those pesky moral standards given to you by a Higher Power. We know soooooo much better than you and we certainly know soooooo much better than God! Drop the religion crap already and come join us in supporting something you find morally repugnant! Give it time - you'll get over it soon enough!"

The blog also saw something of a threat in Obama's comments. "This is our chance to choose to jump up and party with all the same-sex marriage celebrators before you come down and force us to do it?" the blog asked. "What are you going to do if we're still not on board with it? If we still cling to God and religion? 'Cause I'm pretty secure in the knowledge that God will have something to say about that in a future day."

Obama, as we reported in 2012, has spent some time shifting and evolving on the issue of gay marriage. In February 1996, he wrote on a candidate questionnaire: “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” In 2011, however, then-White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer claimed the statement was written by someone else.

"What I believe is that marriage is between a man and a woman … What I believe, in my faith, is that a man and a woman, when they get married, are performing something before God, and it’s not simply the two persons who are meeting,” he said during his 2004 U.S. Senate campaign. In 2008, he supported civil unions, but not gay marriage.

In 2012, he came on board with gay marriage, apparently reverting back to his 1996 position. But as we reported at the time, there was one caveat. He still supported the states' right to decide the matter for themselves.

Celebrating the Supreme Court decision, the White House was lit up in the colors of the gay rainbow flag Friday. The Interior Department marked it with a picture of two men kissing on the edge of Colorado's Black Canyon, drawing praise from many and criticism from others.

This man is a pathological liar. We all know that.

0blabla not told a single truth his entire life -- much less during his fake, contrived Presidency.

Meanwhile, the anecdotal sickening level of over-representation and influence within this gubmint was on display:

It appears society has determined the only sin is racism. Furthermore, they have determined the God of the Bible is dead. They are going to have a difficult job eliminating the eternal fires of hell.

I suppose if Obama was President during the Roe v Wade court decision, he would have said something similar? Would he have encouraged abortion supporters to "help” people overcome their deeply-held religious views?

This entire hostile social-ist movement is aimed at demonizing....God (!) and of course His disciples of the Gospel (Christians.) God now portrayed as either "evil," indifferent, or He doesn't exist. Satan's power grows still...

Exactly how a bunch of nihilists, atheists, narcissists, and New Agers took over and subverted the mantle of morality and ethics within 20 years (especially since the advent of the internet) in this country has been mind-boggling.

It should read STILL have the rights to disagree and debate. Totalitarianism, you see, when it comes to full fruition DOES NOT TOLERATE dissent.

Look no further than the totalitarian democrat party . . . . no debate or dissent there.

Of course, on the other hand....what are you to do now? Will you renounce your citizenship and settle elsewhere?

Yes, in 35 or so short years we've gone from Reagan's "Shining City on a Hill" to Jameson's "Hey, it's still better than Kenya or Somalia."

The English mathematician that broke the Nazi Enigma codes during WW-2 was a homosexual. Do you think you are smarter than he was?

BTW,it became known that he was a homosexual after the war,and he lost his job and pretty much everything he had worked for because of it,and IIRC,he ended up killing himself.

I guess you think that was a just reward for his work during WW-2?

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Nope - not defending them at all.

I just don't think the solution is to kill them.

Many homosexuals have been productive members of society and have contributed to making the world a better place in spite of their faggotry.

Stone (and you I suppose) would ignore that fact.

The English mathematician that broke the Nazi Enigma codes during WW-2 ...

I thought it was Polish cryptologists who in 1932 first discovered ways of deciphering Enigma. The Poles did so with the aid of French-supplied intelligence material obtained from a German spy. The Poles actually built replicas of the machines. The Poles turned over the methodology and the machines to the British and French at the beginning of the war. However, credit for breaking the code was given to Alan Turing and Joan Clark at Bletchley Park in the UK.

I thought it was Polish cryptologists who in 1932 first discovered ways of deciphering Enigma.

I THINK they had help from a Polish partisan group that ambushed a Nazi convoy and managed to capture a early Enigma machine with the code books.

IIRC,this was the source of the early British ability to read the Nazi messages. Then the Royal Navy managed to capture a Nazi U-boat and board it before it sank to save the code books and the code machine.

Then later in the war the Nazi's developed a new Enigma machine with an additional set of rotors, and it was a whole new game. IIRC,this new code was the one the guy broke.

I THINK he is also credited with inventing the first working computer, which is what was needed to reduce the number of possibilities, but could be wrong about this.

I got all this from watching a PBS series about "The Code Breakers of Benchley Park"(or some similar title) a few years ago. Despite his young age he was a bleeping genius that headed up the operation, but he by no means did it all by himself. I also read a novel about the Enigma Machine sometime back in the early 60's.

Well those ladies are right in their translation.

I think the TV series The Bible called it:

Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. (Psalm 62:1-2)

If I were a younger man with no school aged children I would be seriously thinking about moving out of the U.S. My vote isn't worth sh*t here anymore so moving to a place were I might not be able to vote would be no biggie. Australia might be a better place to live and raise a family these days. Heck even Canada may be save for the weather. I would seriously look at places in Asia and S. America as well. Yes, bor. SA quite some time ago, Asia several times in the past decade. Neither are bastions of freedom nor without social and economic problems (especially racial prejudices) but an anglo foreigner that can speak the language probably could live a relatively pleasant life without every day having to watch and bemoan the destruction of the society in which he grew up.

Seems to me that very few Asians exhibit prejudices towards Caucasians. You can live amongst them with no racial problems whatsoever as long as conduct yourself in a respectful manner.

Truth to tell, white people are more welcome these days in Asia than they are America.

Not so for blacks living in any area where American blacks were stationed in the US Military. Australia and the US had a mini-diplomatic flare up over blacks going to Australia on R&R in 1969,and Australia wanted to ban them due to their conduct. They relented because both the US and Australia were allies in the VN war,and both wanted to show a united front. I did hear plenty of complaints about US blacks while I was there, though.

Same thing with Japan. The Japanese have arrested and given stiff prison sentences to a proportionately high number of American blacks for beating, raping, and even murdering Japanese women. I know of two cases where the US government tried to intervene and arrange for the convicts to serve their time in US prisons, and the Japanese basically told them to piss off.

I have no doubt that the time they served in a Japanese prison for raping and/or murdering Japanese women was really and truly "hard time". You give a Japanese prison guard any lip,you will get beaten senseless. Different laws and a different approach to the treatment of prisoners.

BTW,I was considering a future move to Russia after the collapse of the USSR. Then the Russians were robbed blind by the Clinton Administration as well as by (mostly) German industrialists, and Putin replaced Yeltsin and the friendly atmosphere towards Americans took a major chill.

Simple question, really. And in a world full of hellholes and backwaters, saying "well, America is still better than [fill in the blank]" hardly seems comforting when looking at the bigger picture.

The phrase entered the American lexicon early in its history, in the Puritan John Winthrop's 1630 sermon "A Model of Christian Charity". Still aboard the ship Arbella, Winthrop admonished the future Massachusetts Bay colonists that their new community would be "as a city upon a hill", watched by the world — which became the ideal the New England colonists placed upon their hilly capital city, Boston.[1] The Puritans' community in New England would set an example of communal charity, affection, and unity to the world, or if the Puritans failed to uphold their covenant of God, "we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world" of God's judgement. Winthrop's sermon gave rise to the widespread belief in American folklore that the United States of America is God's country because metaphorically it is a Shining City upon a Hill, an early example of American exceptionalism.

...

In the twentieth century, the image was used a number of times in American politics. On 9 January 1961, President-Elect John F. Kennedy returned the phrase to prominence during an address delivered to the General Court of Massachusetts:

...

President Ronald Reagan used the image as well, in his 1984 acceptance of the Republican Party nomination[3] and in his January 11, 1989, farewell speech to the nation:

Those words were John Winthrop's

They were Reagans in the example given because they were a key part of the speech he made.

is America still a shining city on a hill?

Absolutely.

It has been for a couple hundred years, and will continue to be.

That's my opinion, since you asked so nicely.

I've know a great many young (and not-so-young) people from other parts of the world, who have come here to study, to learn, and to work.

They mortgage all they have, in many cases all their entire family has ever had - just for the opportunity.

Then they return home and try to spread their experience and their training to their country.

We continue to innovate, research, develop, and build. We continue to evolve as a culture and grow as a society.

The future is bright.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I see things quite differently. The America you described gradually ceased to exist, starting probably 50 years ago (or more.)

When the Founders created for posterity a "CONTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC" they assumed there would always be a pool of statesmen to draw from. Statesmen who would lead (not stick their moist finger to the wind). Statesmen who would take the long view - sometimes doing the unpopular thing. Instead we are infested at all levels of government (and now the courts) with politicians.

Politicians could be compared to prostitutes, and their supporters to "johns" - but that would be an insult to whores and their clients. Today's pols have entered a Faustian bargain - their "johns" get more and more freebies and benefits, as long as they keep voting them in. And due to the "bipartisan" efforts of both Ds and Rs, numbers of freebie seekers will continue to grow exponentially.

So the politicians have given us a welfare state - and now the courts have given us Ancient Rome.

"The future is bright" you say.

So is the headlight of an oncoming train.

This is my opinion, (which is shared my most Americans)

Yes, ignorant people often make absurd assertions because they don't have the facts.

The U.S. is 12th in Economic Freedom

The U.S. is a lowly 49th in Press Freedom

But my favorite category is one I called petty tyranny. There aren't any police in Thailand shutting down kid's mango stands. There aren't any regulations in the Philippines that prevents people from competing in the taxi business. There aren't any laws in China prohibiting smoking in restaurants, bars, and office buildings. On and on and on... The U.S. has become one of the biggest petty tyrannies on the planet, especially compared to what we were 40 or 50 years ago.

I think it started in the 1920's when the Soviet Union created their program to take over our schools, but your 50 year estimate is pretty much on the mark for when the takeover was complete and they were going full-speed ahead.

No American born since 1964 has ever lived in a free country and has no idea what they are missing.

God is merciful, forgiving, and loving. He is also holy and fearful. Many believe that when they meet God, they will "tell off the old geezer" and be happy to go to Hell where they will have the time of their life or simply cease to exist.

I can only say that when they meet God, they won't tell Him off. They won't nonchalantly march off to Hell. Hell is a place of darkness and torment and great fear. That is why Christians do things to warn people of the blessings of Heaven and the punishments of Hell, a place of torment and regret that they didn't take advantage of God's offer of salvation when they had the chance.

There will be no one in Hell who will be able to say they didn't know or didn't have the opportunity to gain a ticket to be with God in His Kingdom.

I do believe that there is now and will be more so for my grandkids before they achieve adulthood. They are not part of a minority group, other than they are being taught conservative principles and values as well as religious values and self-reliance, any of which makes them a target in the U.S. even today. There will be no better time for my daughter to relocate her family to a place that is less hostile toward those values - before the grandkids get brainwashed in the U.S. school system and are the outright target for being white.

My wife and I are in the twilight of our years so it doesn't matter nearly as much to us. We would not move away from them and will always choose to enjoy our final years with them even in the moral, political and economic sh*thole that the U.S. society is becoming.
